White House in panic over spy scandal

Bush is on the rack over a revelation that his close aide Karl Rove exposed a CIA agent

Paul Harris in Washington
Sunday July 17, 2005
The Observer

It was a question the White House press corps once believed unthinkable. Has President George W Bush lost confidence in his political guru, Karl Rove? If simply posing the question was a surprise last week, the answer - or, more accurately, the lack of one - was an even greater shock.

When Bush faced reporters at the White House last Wednesday, he dodged questions on Rove. Seated as ever, just behind his President, Rove himself was tight-lipped and pale. The Rove-Bush partnership has changed the face of American politics, propelling Bush from Texas to the White House. Not for nothing is Rove known as 'boy genius' to Republican friends and 'Bush's brain' to Democrat enemies. Now that is under threat.

The so-called 'Valerie Plame affair' has the Bush administration in a panic. An investigation into whether White House officials deliberately blew the cover of a CIA agent in an attempt to hit out at a critic of the Iraq war has Rove firmly in its sights.

The scandal has all the classic ingredients: an unmasked CIA agent - who just happens to be a glamorous blonde - and a tough-minded independent investigator. There are secret sources, leaked emails and even a reporter thrown in jail. The official White House spokesman, the normally unflappable Scott McClellan, has been caught making a grossly misleading statement. Newspapers are devoting page after page to the twists and turns of the case.

1. My favorite line:
"Seated as ever, just behind his President, Rove himself was tight-lipped and pale." It does my heart good to know that that putrid little man is soiling his shorts over this. After all the misery he spread, no one deserves this more.

17. Yours is a good point about cause and effect, O! So Poppy hired Atwater...
Edited on Sat Jul-16-05 10:36 PM by Octafish
... who hired Rove and taught Smirko as best he could. If Poppy hadn't been in a position to hire Atwater, we never would've had more than five decades of both Hot and Cold War misey, Bush-induced pretty much uninterrupted since November 22, 1963.

22. Critical mass.
I'm thinking we're getting there. People are on to these turds. They know what the Bush family is up to. more and more are seeing where the world is heading. They don't want to sacrifice their children's lives and their grandchildren's future.

But 90-percent? If we had an honest media, we'd be at about 99-percent disapproval.

5. I wish I could read a headline like that in the US press
It does my heart good to think they are in a panic.

However, I have one bone to pick within this article that I thought I'd never encounter in a non-US publication -- the fawning over Bush's strong sense of loyalty to Rove which is portrayed as a virtue. The man got where he was because he hired the dirtiest, most contemptible sneak who wins only because he destroys his opponents in the most underhanded fashion imaginable. Bush took an oath to defend this country (I know, I know) and if his minions operate in a manner which undermines the defense of this country, it's not in any way, shape or form laudable that he holds on to them.

10. I just hope
more and more of the truth coms out. I am thinking her outing was just a means to maybe a bigger end- Like that hey wanted to take down the whole operation- Brewster and Jennings- some others seem to be hinting at that too. Outing her was a bonus for the BUSHInc. but not the real goal. This was likely more than just petty revenge.
Jack Kelly's note to Judith Miller seems like a connection.
So perhaps they have MUCH more to be worried about- like a piece to puzzles we have been discussinf for a long time. Maybe we can get it put together and more folks will see the big picture.

13. There's so much to uncover, I have a nagging fear
that it all won't be unleashed. This article says "critic of the Iraq war"... no, not really... more like: agent who reported there's no evidence Saddam was buying the big U.

It's not Niger damn it... it's IRAQ. It's IRAQ, it's IRAQ, it's IRAQ.

It's not the Wilson's really, it's BREWSTER AND JENNINGS. It's BREWSTER AND JENNINGS, it's BREWSTER AND JENNINGS.

I want to scream.

12. I've got a funny feeling Rove
is being targeted as a sacrificial lamb in this mess. Notice, the architects of this Stupendous Failure called Iraq; namely Bill Kristol, that loser Douglas Feith, all of them are loudly denouncing this administration. I've noticed they've targeted their "Good Buddy" Don RumsFailed. He's been the object of lots of criticism from his 'friends'. (my, how quickly they turn).

So I think something's happened in the background, where the REAL decisions are made. Bush is just "window dressing", nothing more than a hologram of a president.

We know the real powerhouses behind the scenes are people like Kristol and all the other parasites from the PNAC.

In my opinion, the failure in Iraq is driving this sordid mess. I think the real powerbrokers are fed up with Bush & Cheney. They see them as stupid fools, which they obviously are.

They probably want new people in there, to do a better job, so to speak.

15. Well that was a good read -- almost as good as . . .
Interesting that the aim was perhaps to shut any CIA person up -- by blowing the cover of "just one spy".

In a way this has the ear marks of very short term planners -- they figured they could get away with anything -- including murder. And so far this bunch of thugs and liars has gotten away with every sort of double dirty dealing treachery -- even the most talented novelist wouldn't even imagine writing about -- because who could believe that a gang of crooks could get away with so much -- and most people in the US don't seem to give a damn.

But then IF IF IF -- the democrats and a few journalists who've found their spines (& balls) can keep this on the front burner.

This is an easy story to understand -- a spy's cover was blown -- and the only people who should have known are those with a "need to know".
