WHY WHY WHY must we use the victim's name to frame the issue? |
|
Quite a few threads lately as to what we should use to refer to the case of the exposed CIA NOC.
<Stupidnomduplume>gate just trivializes it.
Using the victim's name is unfair to the already abused victim.
There are better minds here than that. Surely someone on DU can come up with something better.
I see using the name of the victim to refer to the case as nothing more than revictimizing.

And I'm also fairly well sick of hearing every scandal that comes along on the political stage tagged by a name with the ridiculous "gate" at the end. It's like the use of "holic" at the end of other terms to denote addiction.
"Gate" doesn't mean anything, it's just the last syllable in Watergate. Yes, I know why it's been used ad nauseum, but that doesn't make it a clever thing to do!
If we can't be more creative, how about something plainspoken, like "The Rove Leak Scandal"?

Plame is just the tip of the iceberg.
The concepts of warfare got all mixed up in this war. I’ll come back to this subject later, but what has happened is that information warfare, strategic influence, strategic psychological operations pushed their way into the important process of informing the peoples of our two democracies. The United States and the UK got too good at the concepts they had been developing for future warfare. Sam Gardiner Colonel, USAF (Retired) October 8, 2003

You made me think. Thanks for the virtual head-slap.
I will change my nomenclature ... but I think TraitorGate is too far out there...it's true, but not a good frame for other reasons.
Rovegate? ...Turdblossomgate ....
WMDGATE....
CIAGATE? ... CYAGATE ...
