We're not stupid, Mr. President

I want to commend Mr. David Spero for writing, "Bush must Answer to Downing Street Memo" (June 18).

The lack of response is causing Christian conservatives like myself to question what Bush's credibility has been all along. If he does not answer this, people I know are going to become very suspicious and he cannot ensure that the Republican Party will remain in control.

This lack of response causes many of us to wonder about other stances he has taken. We are beginning to wonder if he did cheat his way into the White House both times, after all, and if Diebold really did switch vote totals. It was ignored when people questioned why machine tallies seemed juxtaposed to exit polling.

Then there was a hush about this in the media. Americans are not as stupid as Bush thinks. Even those who were not suspicious before are wondering why his party is trying so hard to ignore The Downing Street Memo, even through the compliant media. Each day that Bush is silent causes him to lose support.

This is damn good news. When even his staunchest supporters (or even someone trying to LOOK like one of his staunchest supporters--always a possibility) comes down on the side of truth, it's time to applaud.

There was another snarky anti-Bush letter in there among the local concerns, and no letters supporting Bush or providing another right-wing line.

My highly Republican area is similar. The newspaper here has a hard time getting publishable non-astroturf rightist or pro-adminisration letters to balance the left and Democratic letters it gets, and some days I could have written all the LTTEs because they all reflect my sentiments.

The only thing that will really get their boxers in a bunch is if Bush negates the tax-free status of "legitimate" churches . . .

Too many real issues listed in this letter to be from a "converted" person.
