Transcript of Bob Schieffer's commentary
Since the video wouldn't play for me I found the transcript and decided to post the comments. The man certainly does lay it on the line and so eloquently as well. It was a good read and Wilson does a fabulous job. This is a PDF file.

Instead of appointing a special prosecutor, what if the president had just called in his top people in the beginning of all this and said, `Folks, we have a problem here. I need to know who's been
talking to Bob Novak, and I need to know today by the end of business'? That's what presidents used to do, and they're usually pretty good at finding out when they really want to know.

Not many people had the nerve to lie to Lyndon Johnson when he looked them in the eye, and Richard Nixon figured out early on who Deep Throat was, and now we know from Woodward and Bernstein that on that one Nixon was right.

Instead, this White House did what it usually does when challenged: It went into attack mode, called charges that the White House had leaked the name ridiculous, and allowed the controversy to boil until a special prosecutor had to be appointed. Now two years and millions of tax dollars later, the president's trusted friend and strategist Karl Rove has emerged as the top suspect, and we're left to wonder: Can anything said from the White House podium be taken at face value, or does the White House just deny automatically anything that reflects badly on it?

This could and should have been dealt with inside the White House long before it reached the special prosecutor level. Instead, the president's people followed the modern public relations rule, `Never admit a mistake, just do what is necessary to kill the story before it kills you,' which often works. What they are learning, though, is that when that involves tearing down the character of your critics, it can also be very dangerous business.

1. It's really about Bush and his refusal to ASK ROVE
what happened.

And letting Rove lie to Scotty---where is this supposed man who is the supposed president? Vacation month isn't for two weeks.

4. There for awhile, he was pretty gung ho for the party line
Wonder how his brother, the ambassador, feels these days.

5. I don't.
He moderated the last presidential debate and gave bush three softball questions concerning religion....questions bush expected and that gave him the perfect opportunities to speak to his Christian base. I felt it was a turning point in the momentum that Kerry had built up during the previous 2 debates.

I thought his moderating was biased and obviously designed to help bush. No wonder CBS replaced Dan Rather with Bob Schieffer.

3. The freepers think this is just...
the most foul, shocking speech ever. I thought it was meant more kindly than they deserved; suggesting they might have had a way out if they'd chosen to take it but that they would rather do their usual sliming.

6. Gee Bob, it only took you five years
The White House goes into attack mode when challenged, huh? Finally fucking noticed, Bob? And it seems that all Bush had to do was call in his top people, huh? Brilliant! I wonder why no one else thought of that, you fucking thumb-up-your-ass, see-no-evil, head-in-the-sand, disgrace to what used to be the Tiffany Network?

I wonder if all of this would have never occurred to Schieffer if we hadn't lost a couple of thousand soldiers, squandered hundreds of billions of dollars, wasted tens of thousands Iraqis and drained the federal Treasury?

"The White House goes into attack mode when challenged." Honestly!

Edited on Sun Jul-17-05 11:51 PM by Skittles
I'm finding a lot of these editorials nauseating because, gee, maybe if they'd spoke up BEFORE THE BASTARD WAS RE-INSTALLED INTO THE WHITE HOUSE - or BEFORE THEY STOLE EITHER ELECTION. *sheesh*

8. The Prez is treated like a mushroom?
It's either that or he knew what was going on. Maybe we will know which someday or not.

10. I just changed my avatar in honor of Schieffer. He's finally doing his job
Finally, the press decided they'll make more money telling the truth:

"Can anything said from the White House podium be taken at face value, or does the White House just deny automatically anything that reflects badly on it?"
Bob. Schieffer

You're finally catching on, Bob.:kick:
