Links To "Government Documents On Torture" From The ACLU. Photos Due Fri.
Edited on Mon Jul-18-05 01:20 PM by DistressedAmerican
In advance of the upcoming release of 144 more photos and several videos (Due to be handed over on Friday the 22nd following an extension granted by the federal judge hearing the case), I wanted to post these very interesting links.

http://action.aclu.org/torturefoia/

The consist of a large body of documents so far released by the feds in response to ACLU FOI requests and legal actions to back up those requests. It includes many first hand accounts of torture from prisoners interviewed as part of various abuse investigations.

The documents record numerous outrageous acts of prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib, Camp Bucca and GITMO. As these photos break in the media(next week I expect), be prepared with facts and real information about what is happening in these facilities. They will be lying like dogs. Have facts to back your arguments!

Do not let them rest. They are sweating the war, Rove, Bolton, etc. This will keep the pressure up. The cracks are widening with each passing day and they are taking on water at a rate they can not deal with. Help drill a few more holes in this rotten ship.

We need to end this war NOW!

ON EDIT: PLEASSE SUPPORT THE ACLU! NO ONE IS WORKING THIS ISSUE AS HARD AS THEY ARE!

6. This is not a good summer for the WH.
Edited on Mon Jul-18-05 01:21 PM by Lecky
I'm glad that the truth is coming out about the atrocities that have been committed in all of our names, but I am not looking forward to seeing those pictures. I personally don't have to see them to realize that we need to stop the torture. Unfortunately, there are still many out there who don't understand how horrible this is for our country and how it adds fuel to our enemies. The public needs to know the truth though, we need to fix this NOW and work on making sure this never happens again. It's obvious that no one is holding these guys accountable, it's up to the people to demand something be done.

Everything is piling up...we need to get rid of the crooks in the WH, congress and the military. If we really love our nation we should hold it to the highest of standards, this isn't political and should apply to all responsible.

7. I dread it. But, I appreciate the link.
It causes me so much anguish to know the horror being done in my name. I can not for the life of me conceive of what is in the minds and hearts of those who continue to defend these crimes.

I'm glad Rummy's direct approval of these atrocities have been revealed.

I just wish this shit was over.

14. US Atty requested extension to 7/22 (a Friday) for all at once release
New Abu Ghraib photos ready - US Atty requested extension to July 22
So they can release everything (photos AND video) at the same time.

I haven't heard what Judge Hellerstein said but since we didn't see the photos on June 30th, as originally ordered, it would seem that Kelley's extension was granted. Right?

I'm sure they wanted to take the one hit upon release instead of two separate hits in the news.

=========================================
In issuing his order, U.S. District Court Judge Alvin Hellerstein of New York City gave the government until June 30 to get the photos ready by removing information in the pictures that might identify the victims. The judge said the photographs "are the best evidence the public can have of what occurred" at Abu Ghraib.

David Kelley, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, has asked Hellerstein for an extension - until July 22 - to get all the video and still pictures ready for release.

In a June 10 letter to Hellerstein, Kelley said the government would have the photographs ready by June 30. But "in order to address all of the responsive Darby images at one time," he requested that Hellerstein not order the release of any until the video processing is completed July 22.

The Bush administration is likely to pay a public relations penalty for failing to release all of the Abu Ghraib images sooner.

"There would have been short-term discomfort and pain but then it would have been over with," Nikolas Gvosdev, a senior fellow in strategic studies at The Nixon Center here and an analyst of the Abu Ghraib abuse scandal. "These pictures may all be of the same event but they might convey the impression that the abuse is ongoing."

20. Here's another story link. I've only found the 3 so far - Nothing else.
More Abu Ghraib photos coming
Pentagon readies as many as 144 images after recent court order

By ERIC ROSENBERG, Washington bureau
First published: Sunday, June 19, 2005

WASHINGTON -- The Pentagon is preparing to release another batch of photos showing prisoner abuse at the Abu Ghraib prison near Baghdad, a step that is likely to renew criticism of U.S. handling of detainees there.
As many as 144 photos and still images from four videotapes could be made public in coming weeks as soon as the Pentagon finishes editing them to conceal the identify of the victims.

The digital photos are from the same batch amassed by Army Spc. Joseph Darby, who was based at Abu Ghraib. Darby turned the photos over to military investigators last year.

Later, some photos showing naked Iraqi prisoners being forced to simulate sex acts were published.

The ensuing controversy triggered wide criticism of U.S. policies at the prison.

To date, eight soldiers have pleaded guilty or been convicted at court martial in the scandal.

A federal judge in New York on June 2 ordered the government to prepare to release the rest of the Darby photos in response to a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union under the Freedom of Information Act.

In issuing his order, U.S. District Court Judge Alvin Hellerstein of New York City gave the government until June 30 to get the photos ready by removing information in the pictures that might identify the victims.

David Kelley, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, has asked Hellerstein for an extension -- until July 22 -- to get all the images, both video and pictures, ready for release.

Just goes to show that this story is flying completely below the awareness of the public. They are not going to be prepared for the shock at all.

Iraq Signs Military Pact with Iran

Iraq Signs Military Pact with Iran
Thu, 7 Jul 2005 22:11:20 -0700Summary:

Here’s an update: The “democratically elected” government of Iraq, much-ballyhooed by the Bush adminstration and its toadies, has signed an agreement of military cooperation with current Bush public enemy number one, Iran.

In other news, 100 “democratically elected” members of the Iraqi parliament have signed a petition demanding that the US withdraw its forces from Iraq immediately.

By Neil MacDonald in Baghdad and Najmeh Bozorgmehr in Tehran
Republished from Financial Times

Iraq signs a pact in Tehran agreeing to accept Iranian military training and other cooperation.

Former foes Iraq and Iran announced “a new chapter” in their relations on Thursday, including cross-border military co-operation, dismissing US concerns about Iranian regional meddling.

On his first official visit to Tehran, Iraqi minister of defence Saadoun al-Dulaimi asserted his country’s sovereign right to seek help from wherever it sees fit in rebuilding its defence capabilities.

“Nobody can dictate to Iraq its relations with other countries,” Mr Dulaimi said in a joint press conference with his Iranian counterpart, Admiral Ali Shamkhani.

The two ministers said that a military co-operation agreement, now in the preparation, would include Iranian help with training and upgrading Iraq’s reconstituted armed forces, a process so far overseen by US and coalition advisers.

I know the Gov't requested the July 22 extension.. But no word, on the ACLU website or anywhere else, if it was granted. Are we assuming Friday is the new date or do we have some kind of confirmation?

Just wondering.

because everyone was seeing them, anyway.

No, the game for the Bush admin. is keeping them from being released. Once they're out, particularly if we're talking about some of the stuff Sy Hersh alluded to last year, they are fucked- and it's all about the damage control.
