At least in terms of the American "media."

Helen Thomas today to Scottie McClellan: "Two years and he can't call Rove in and find out what the hell is going on? All he has to do is call him in?"

http://americablog.blogspot.com/2005/07/scott-mcclellan-lying-live-on-cspan-1.html

On Edit: After seeing the responses here, I changed the title. It really isn't "sad" -- but it does make the others pathetic.

8. If she wasn't 85 years old and somewhat decrepit.
And I wasn't 32 years old and married.

Well, never mind :)

3. I don't find that idea sad.
"It's really sad that an 85 year old woman is the model of courage."

I rather like it.

12. You know -- you are absolutely right about that.
I should have pointed out that it's only sad because of the comparison to her "colleagues" in the media.

16. Shameful is the correct word; I'm as proud as can be of Helen.
I watched her during Watergate as a teenager, 30 years later, she still kicks most journalist's asses to the curb.

20. I understood what you meant, of course, but I've been a Helen fan
for 30 years; the woman is still showing 'em how it's done.

God bless her!

4. Bush sounds just like when a CEO of a failed company is being
asked what went wrong. "I don't know, I need to get the facts myself!"

18. And if anyone should know what it's like
to be a CEO of a failed company, it's Dumbyah. Every business he's ever had his hands on had to be bailed out by Poppy's friends.

5. Helen Thomas makes me wish we knighted people....
or something like that in this country. She certainly deserved some sort
of recognition for the vigil she is keeping for responsible, tough journalism.

13. She came to DC during WWII, right out of college....
wanting to be a reporter, and has never left.

It's worth getting a hold of a copy of her biography just to read about her
early life.

9. It's not sad - it's inspirational
There are still some grown ups in Washington to show them how it needs to be done. She can get away with it because she is that age. She has had that reputation from the beginning of her career. She just needs to teach them how it's done. Remember, they have silenced her very effectively for almost 4 years now. She is coming back into her own. Let's hope they are paying attention!

That really says a lot. It shows me at least that Bush knows everything. Has Fitzgerald questioned Bush yet? Or anybody else higher up that was on that flight to Africa?

15. Not sad at all, IMO.
Here in the South, we're quite used to "little old ladies" who don't give Shit One what anybody thinks. They speak their minds and let the rough side drag.

The sad part is that there are, say, so very few 35-year-old men who could come within fifty miles of Miz Helen's courage!

24. I assume that Rove would lie to Bush, so the "just call him in" statement
is not true.

I can't think why Rove would particularly tell Bush the truth. In fact, I would think Bush would be the one he would lie to the most.
Bush could fire him, so he is the one to lie to - IMHO.

25. Tough as nails, beholden to the truth
Helen Thomas is a fighter who makes most of her younger spineless colleagues look like mere sycophants and careerist no-nothings. Age should never be a factor in one's search for the truth. The lady speaks truth to power and we are all better off for that.

26. How is it shameful? Got something against 85 year old women?
Or are you holding the equally stupid position that our model of courage should be a young man or woman? Or that it should be a man? What the fuck are you even talking about?

28. It pays to read the text, not just the subject line. He's praising her
bravery and tenacity compared to the poodles surrounding her.

But hell, start your stuff; never mind the rest of the pasts in the thread. :eyes:
