Press Briefing by Scott McClellan
James S. Brady Briefing Room
------------------
Press Briefing
------------------
1:04 P.M. EDT
------------------

(snip)

Q Is leaking, in your judgment of his interpretation, a crime?

MR. McCLELLAN: I'll leave it at what the President said.

Go ahead.

Q What is his problem? Two years, and he can't call Rove in and find out what the hell is going on? I mean, why is it so difficult to find out the facts? It costs thousands, millions of dollars, two years, it tied up how many lawyers? All he's got to do is call him in.

MR. McCLELLAN: You just heard from the President. He said he doesn't know all the facts. I don't know all the facts.

Q Why?

MR. McCLELLAN: We want to know what the facts are. Because --

Q Why doesn't he ask him?

MR. McCLELLAN: I'll tell you why, because there's an investigation that is continuing at this point, and the appropriate people to handle these issues are the ones who are overseeing that investigation. There is a special prosecutor that has been appointed. And it's important that we let all the facts come out. And then at that point, we'll be glad to talk about it, but we shouldn't be getting into --

Q You talked about it to reporters.

MR. McCLELLAN: We shouldn't be getting into prejudging the outcome.

22. Well, sure, he's soft on treason, but that's not the issue:
he's still waiting to see whether the treason is a crime. ;-)

And like the sound of one hand clapping, is treason a crime if the president pardon's the perpetrator, and keeps him on as chief of staff? ;-)

2. He can't ask him until the investigation is over? wtf?
If Mr.bush were to ask Karl, he might get an answer. Oh, I'm sorry, I mean prejudge the outcome. So he can't just ask him. Because they are responding to news storied and don't want to prejudice the outcome. So don't ask?

My brain hurts from trying to figure out the logic here.

18. plausible deniability
Bushco doesn't want to know or at least pretend that he doesn't already know. The crucial question since Watergate: "What did the President know and when did he know it?"

MR. McCLELLAN: Well, we all serve at the pleasure of the President in this White House.

At HIS pleasure??? Dammit! He is supposed to serve us, and humbly so!

35. This is a stock phrase that's used for anyone who works in the...
administration (whether Republican or Democratic). I've seen it used by characters in episodes of the "West Wing", which of course is a Democratic administration. It's not peculiar to the B* administration.

MR. McCLELLAN: There are so few things I enjoy more. (Laughter.) Connie, this is nothing personal. Everybody is doing their job here, and I respect the job that you all are doing in this room. And I look forward to having a continuing constructive relationship with everybody in this room."

29. Glad you enjoy working with everybody Scotty cause ...
Your boy has three more years to serve on his sentence - in another year he'll wish he had the Nixon option - but I say 'hell no he can't resign' - how many military officers who want to resign right now can't because of stop loss.
Don't impeach him - make him serve his sentence - bet we can take it easier than he can take it. :smoke:

funny thing is
they won't comment now because there is an investigation going on, yet they traded in gossip when they made statements of "I heard that too" to these reporters. They have nerve to call foul about the reporters doing what they did themselves.

In the absence of a statement from them, we are left to our imagination to figure out just what happened, when it happened, and who was involved. The thing that disturbs me is, the facts may be far worse than any of us can even imagine! Leave us to "debate in a vacuum", and you deserve the stories that get floated about you". Yes, I am looking at you Rove, Libby, Cheney, Condi, and the Boy-blunder.

25. I think you are confusing . . .
"Special Prosecutor" with "Independent Prosecutor." Fitz is a special prosecutor because this case would ordinarily be out of his jurisdiction, as the crimes occurred in DC not Chicago. But he's not an independent prosecutor in the sense that he still reports to DOJ.

Criminal procedure is not my bag, so if I've made an error here I'd appreciate a correction.

16. Never ask a question when you know you won't like the answer.
Lawyers say it's wise to never ask a witness a question when you don't know the answer, or at least have a real good idea of what the witness might answer.

In this case, bush knows the answer. If he asks Rove, which is an exercise in redundancy since bush knows the answer, then bush becomes complicit. They're all just covering their collective a**, but especially bush. Anybody who believes anything different really needs to go back to school, say, 2nd grade or thereabouts.

YES, I ALREADY TOOK A SHOWER ... and b4 posting this from FR ...

snottie's mamma is a currently elected TX repuke official (Comptroller, I believe) and will be challenging Perry for Guv of TX; however, the proper string and spellings of her names should be:
Carole Keeton McClellan Rylander Strayhorn

http://www.window.state.tx.us/

~snip
To: BTCM

Scott McClellan got his job because of his pushy mom, Carol McClellan-Keaton-Rylander-Strayhorn, the much married/divorced challenger to Gov. Rick Perry of Texas. His brother is running Medicare in this country. The old gal saw to it that her boys got on the federal gravy train when W was elected in 2000. I don't know if Mark McClellan is doing a better job at Medicare, but he certainly can't be doing worse than Scott, the press secretary. It would have been a more even contest if Ari would have been in charge of yesterday's horrible presser.

30. Wow!! Did you see this exchange???
(Wow! What caused the media to wake up? There were scandals prior to this one. Why are they doing their jobs now? Is it because American has turned on the pRes and it's ok now to go on the attack? Is it because the scandal involves one of their own? AMAZING!!!)

---------------

Q: Scott, going back to the President's statements from earlier -- if someone committed a crime, they will no longer work in my administration -- it makes me go back to the question I asked you last Wednesday, is there regret from this administration of what it has done to the Wilson family, with the CIA leak? And I talked to Mr. Wilson prior to going into the East Room, and he basically said, the American people deserve an apology, and that his family was basically collateral damage in a bigger picture.

MR. McCLELLAN: All these questions are getting into prejudging the outcome of the investigation, and we're not going to do that.

Q But if someone -- if the President acknowledged that there was a problem, and it could be a criminal problem, if he acknowledged that, isn't there some sort of regret?

MR. McCLELLAN: It's a criminal investigation. We don't know all the facts to it.

Go ahead.

Q Well, is there any regret from this White House that it has caused an American family who worked for this government --

MR. McCLELLAN: I heard what you had to say and I've already answered it.

Q No, you didn't.

34. Face The Nation Bob had it right yesterday
Bob Shieffer on Face the Nation yesterday did a great commentary on the failure of Bush to behave as any other president. Why doesn't he sit down and ask his staff what the truth is and what happened... obviously because the truth implicates him personnally.
