Reasons to Stay Away from Florida |
|
A group of seniors were sitting around the pool in sunny Florida talking about all their ailments.
"My arms have gotten so weak I can hardly lift this cup of coffee," said one.
"Yes, I know," said another. "My cataracts are so bad I can't even see my coffee."
"I couldn't even mark an 'X' at election time, my hands are so crippled, "volunteered a third.
"What? Speak up, I can't hear you," said a fourth.
"I can't turn my head because of the arthritis in my neck," said a fifth, to which several nodded weakly in agreement.
"My blood pressure pills make me so dizzy I can hardly walk," exclaimed another.
"I forget where I am and where I'm going," said an elderly gent.
"I guess that's the price we pay for getting old," winced an old man as he slowly shook his head.
The others nodded in agreement.
"Well, count your blessings," said one woman cheerfully. "THANK GOD WE CAN ALL DRIVE!"

I had an aunt who lived in Sarasota who was a legally blind driver. Scary shit, she navagated by recognizing the shadows of buildings. I don't know how she did it. Just a little sight is apparently all you need!
This was a long time ago however, I have no idea if anything has changed.

3. I am legally blind without my glasses on, |
|
I've lived with it most of my life, and have gotten quite accustomed to interacting with the world without my glasses, since things like swimming, water skiing, martial arts, etc have to be performed without glasses. It amazes people just how well I function without them, yes, working with blurs and shadows etc. In fact one of my favorite pranks with people who know how blind I am is to drive down the highway, and calmly take my glasses off while asking the passenger if they would kindly clean them. The looks and utterances of astonishment and fear are quite gratifying:evilgrin:

I admit to not being that blind with my glasses off but I do kind of know what you mean. It is raining out today so I take my glasses off when outside working with the horses. Granted, they do make big shadows. Still, this woman was amazing. She also had cataracts that made her eyes all bluish. She could not tell us apart but she could navigate where she wanted. Blew my mind. I hope I did not offend you, it was not meant in that way.

In fact having personal experience with lack of sight makes me agree with you. I'm comfortable driving without my glasses when I'm going down the highway. Four lanes, fewer suprises, etc. However there is no way in hell that I would drive in a city without my glasses, too many things coming at once that I simply can't pick up on in time. Thus, I can say with full confidence that these women, if their eyesight is as bad as mine, are fucking menaces on the road, and should either be forced to wear corrective glasses or have their licenses yanked.
Still and all though, if I lost my glasses tommorrow, and couldn't get them replaced again, I wouldn't complain much. I can do most everything without glasses that I can with them. It takes longer, and I squint up my face in funny ways, but I still get it done.

6. I drove on US 41 through Port Charlotte one time-it was harrowing |
|
My dad lives in the area, and he drives fine now that he got a hand-controlled vehicle. He's not that old, anyways (71).
I couldn't believe the way the other old people were driving. You couldn't get anywhere near the speed limit-old people were driving 20 mph in both lanes. I don't think I've ever been so happy to see I-75.

8. It's even worse than that. |
|
They can renew their drivers license by mail. The main road going up and down the gulf coast here is US 19, which is what I have to take. It has the designation of being the 2 deadliest roads in the US. The section in Pinellas County, and the section in Pasco County. It's a combination of NASCAR, a demolition derby, and a wheelchair race. I avoid it at all costs.
It's even worse than that in snowbird season.
