There has been some serious Union bashing going on in this board. We need to stand up and tell them why we're proud to be union members! They think we're greedy and the demise of western civilization as they know it .So speak up before there are none of us left at all!!

3. Currently California Faculty Association...

...formerly Communications Workers of America. I am proud to be a union member. I have a decent contract, with wages and benefits the CSU would dearly love to throttle, because of the power of collective bargaining. We need more, but we wouldn't have what we have without the union.

on edit-- BTW, our graduate student TAs just organized under the UAW. They won a contract with major improvements in salary, benefits, and working conditions. WOOOHOOOO!!!

5. United Transportation Union (retired)
I think the only people who bash unions, are those that can't join them.

Or too dumb to qualify for a union job.

15. I'm English and a proud union member. My Grandad
was at the heart of the union movement here in Britain and that movement did more for ordinary working people than anything else.

Why on earth would there be union bashing on here? That certainly wouldn't happen in Britain.

The only way the weak can be strong is to organise into groups.

United we stand divided we fall. If the whole of America were in unions think what you could do to bush. "Unison" one of the biggest unions in Britain has balloted its members and come out against compulsory ID cards fopr all ciotizens, so it doesn't just have to be work issues it can be political.

Organise and be powerful. Don't and be exploited

30. My union was literally taken over by a group of radicals
and they have done more damage than I can detail here.

It's a very sad story. And membership has continued to drop while this group has been in charge. I can only pray that eventually someone else will step in and have them voted out of office.

34. Absolutely proud former union member absolutely supportive of unions:
Belonged to the ANG (American Newspaper Guild AFL/CIO) at two different papers years ago and defiantly (but unsuccessfully) tried to bring ANG into two other papers. Unfortunately ended up mostly working for non-union papers -- in this shrinking business you go where the work is -- and as a result I have no pension at all other than Social Security.

The exploitation of workers today is rapidly becoming as bad if not worse than it ever was -- the instruments are different (keystroke monitors as opposed to foremen with truncheons) but the malevolence of the plutocrats is ever the same.

I've noted the union-bashing here on DU too: it's an expression of the venomous class hatred that lingers as part of the legacy of the Vietnam Era.

We need a great awakening, but sadly I do not think it likely to happen; today's youth have been brainwashed into a permanently zomboid state of moral imbecility: too pathologically self-centered to empathize even with a biological brother or sister, much less metaphorical kinfolk in some workplace. The notion of "solidarity" is not only beyond their comprehension -- it is utterly alien to their bottomless selfishness. (Note what happened to Moore's heralded "youth turnout" last fall: it stayed home, too busy playing video games or listening to iPods to bother going out to vote.)
