You have my deepest sympathy.
From my own experience, the folks on DU are very kind people. They gave me many words of comfort when I, too, lost a dear friend to this nightmare back in March. I have to say that though grieving never really ends, eventually the best memories begin to crowd out the painful ones.
Take care.

9. Keep Constant Thoughts |
|
Of those who have died in this Invasion as serving nobily in a criminal enterprise.
Also, please never forget those who suffer injuries...physical and mental, from this military action as their hell has just begun. This definitely includes their families whose lives have been turned upside down and permanently altered. You know the chickenhawks and the Repugnicans surely won't.

15. Here's a strange thing |
|
On 9/11, just after the second plane hit, I bumped into an old friend from elementary school in lower Manhattan. I had been a block away when the plane hit, but I'd made it down to the intersection of Broad Street and Stone Street (about 3 blocks south of the NYSE), where we just happened to meet on the street. We were both obviously freaked out, but it was good to see an old familiar face. I seriously hadn't seen the guy since junior high school (about 15 years), but we had been very close.
I found out later that a third friend we had hung out with died in the towers. He was a firefighter. A weird confluence. The three of us had been thick as thieves (ask the candy store owners in our Queens neighborhood!) in elementary school and junior high school, and then nothing for 15 years. Then, in the great contingency - the great game of chance - we were all in that horrible circle of lower Manhattan.
I am sorry for your loss. I feel a strenge ambivalence, because my old friend who died was just a memory for me, and if I never saw him again, I would probably only remember him faintly from time to time. But now I think back to us riding bikes (no helmets - 1984!), and playing touch football in the schoolyard during recess, and playing Chinese handball and I think "Who could have known that this is where we were heading." It all seem so long ago now, so long ago...

16. Bummer. (Read the rest before flaming) |
|
I lost four good friends in Viet Nam in the 60s. Yes, I'm an old phart. But these things happen when regular folks permit assholes to dictate policy. Harsh? Damn right. But it's the truth. And it's actually pretty basic: either we allow the assholes to run the world or we don't.

17. I send my good thoughts to you and his(her) family |
|
This is what Vietnam was like, for those who wish they knew what the sixties were about.
Friends and friends of folks dying daily. Horror stories. Injustice for the troops as well as the people fighting for their own country.
The sadness never goes away. The rage and anger needs to be channeled to STOPPING the war and the fascists who make profits from war.
I am very sad for you. Make sure that his/her death is NOT in vain in terms of our freedoms.

The loss of a good friend comes hard. Especially when it's a wasteful, disrespectful, unnecessary expenditure of life.
I just found out tonight that my oldest friend, and the only childhood connection left in my life, has leukemia.

I feel horrible every time I hear more have died there. Wonder if it will get to the point where most of us will know someone killed, injured or who's in Iraq. I hope not.

Remember the life your friend led and don't let bitterness over the injustice of this war diminish the honor and nobility of your friend's sacrifice.

Thank you for all your thoughts and comments. It's kinda a surreal time for me, I keep remembering different times and such. Really nice guy, creative, funny, damn, I'm really going to miss him. I can only imagine how the families of the 307+ feel right now. I'm not sure where to go from here, it's so hard to actually lose someone when you've been protesting and trying to stop the stupid thing from the beginning. I'm more committed now to getting that Son of a Bush out of office, so we don't have to lose any more good guys and girls.
