You Owe It To The Memories Of These Women (Pic Essay)
Once upon a time in America, women fought for OVER A CENTURY to secure the blessings of liberty and the inalienable right to pursue happiness by obtaining the VOTE:

And to the future of these women, you owe your voice, your passion, and your strength. Do not let them have to fight anew what their forebears sacrificed so much for their gain:

OPPOSE THE CONFIRMATION OF JOHN ROBERTS. FOR ALL WOMEN, PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE.

1. Bush eliminated a pro-choice female and replaced her
with a male conservative who has spoken against Roe v Wade.

Perhaps, the Gop extremists will allow the girls to pick out the color of their burquas, you know, gray or black.

Politically, we have to remember that each day, we are one day closer of getting rid of this fanatic.

3. I agree with you in spirit, but
we need to focus on the prize or we lose everything

the prize is winning back congress

If that happens then they CANNOT just push right wing appointees at the country

I have no complaint the way the democrats are playing it

They indicate they will NOT prejudge

When the confirmation hearings come the questions should be poised as the following:

Do you believe the Roe V Wade decision is constitutional?

It is a simple question with only two responses

It is not based on new law, it is not based on a pending case

If he answers yes, the democrats have no choice but to confirm

but if he answers no, they must filibuster

They cannot take an ambiguous answer

THE PEOPLE HAVE RIGHT TO KNOW

9. W should also be asked why he chose to limit women
to 1 on the SC. That is not representative of our diversity. Which color of burqua does he choose?

I asked two liberal men if they were concerned about a pro-choice female being replaced by a conservative male. It took them a moment to stop and remember that women should be on the SC.

White male conditioning still sending a sublimal message that all males are OK and women are only the oddity.

16. harken back to the 2000 selection...
with Roberts on the SC, what's to stop a similar scenario with 2006 Dem victories disputed, overturned, etc?

what was Robert's part in 2000? do you know? I've read here he was involved in the Repug activity to ensure Bush over Gore.

i'm just musing here, but by 2006, Roberts is either confirmed, or isn't. And then it's too late if he is...

6. Beautiful. One small correction
72 years. That is if you use 1848 -- the Seneca Convention -- as the starting point and 1920 as the ending point for the fight in the U.S. for women's suffrage. However, I always found this poignant: no woman activist (suffragist) who started the fight was alive when it was finally won, and no suffragist who ended the fight was alive when it began.

10. Thank you.
I guess what I was doing was dwelling on the date of the Constitution's ratification in 1788, when it was just white male property owners 21 and over who could vote. I acknowledge no mass level of suffragism was active at the time. So I was taking the tack that over 100 years elapsed between 1788 and 1920. So long and hard was the struggle...

But you have to wonder what Abigail Adams and others of her advanced mind and heart thought of the possibility at the time of the nation's founding. Guess it dared not speak its name until Seneca Falls. Still, I would like to think Abigail would approve.

18. I would trace it back to Abigail Adams "Remember the women"
letter to John, and his response that he feared a "rebellion of the petticoats."

25. True to this day
It really boils down to us women. Sure, there will always be men who support us and their help is indispensible. But ultimately, we women are the ones who have to rise up and demand our rights and freedom. When we do it, some men (and sadly, women) will rail against it with anger and rancor. But when we stand our ground we prevail.

Women, iirc, traditionally vote in the 60th percentile for Democrats.

If you really want a link, I'll do some homework for you.

ETA: It's called the "Gender Gap."

14. 51% of all women voted for Kerry
Edited on Wed Jul-20-05 11:32 PM by ultraist
http://www.now.org/issues/election/elections2004/041112womensvote.html

Between women and men overall, a seven point difference exists in their voting — 51 percent of women voted for John Kerry, while 44 percent of men favored the Democratic candidate. Conversely, men preferred George W. Bush by 55 to 48 percent over women.

The gender gap did, in fact, decline from its 10 point spread in 2000 for Al Gore. Women's leaders speculate that the Bush campaign's intense focus on security, and their active courting of women voters, drew additional support to the Republican ticket. However, the research shows that, for women, security is more than averting terrorist attacks:

"We need to broaden the dialogue about security," said Lake. Issues such as preventing violence against women, equal pay, health care and social security are all of vital interest to women and progressive voters.

The shift of a small percentage of women's votes to Bush occurred most notably among white women, married women and older women. Still, within these groups, women demonstrated less support for Bush than their male counterparts. Women of color overwhelmingly preferred Kerry, voting 75 percent in his favor. Sixty-two percent of unmarried women voted for Kerry and 56 percent of young women (age 18-29) also voted Democratic.

23. Must be nice.
In my state, 55 percent of the women voted for the ape.

I CANNOT, under any circumstances, understand why.

I just don't get it.

I don't want to be taken back to having no choice. I want to remarry, but I don't want to be a slave.

17. it's stunning to realize my mother was 7 when women got the vote
she was active in the League of Women Voters, was a dem precinct captain a few times

she died March 31, 2005 at 92

in the family plot (8 places, she was the last to be buried there) the first burial was 1906 (1 year before OK became a state), the last was hers in 2005.....the oldest birthdate in the plot is my great-grandfather, born in VA in 1842 and died in OK in 1919; the most recent is my mother's in 1913.....the 1906 death was a 6 month old baby, the reason the plot was purchased
