1. Different story altogether... |
|
Agnew got caught cheating on his taxes. Nothing to do with Watergate that I know of.

4. I think he took bribes from contractors while Governor. |
|
Took a little while for it to catch up with him.
Also, something I had forgotten, it was rumored that his son was gay and Nixon WH was not looking forward to dealing with that issue.

His administration was already wounded before Agnew's disgrace. If I had to mark a Beginning of the End, I'd say it was Butterfield's inadvertant revelation that an Oval Office taping system existed, the tapes of which eventually confirmed John Dean's Senate testimony.

6. Agnew as president was unthinkable. |
|
He had to be dispatched before Nixon could step aside or be impeached. That's how I see it anyway.

Neither democrats nor republicans would have moved to take Nixon out of office had Agnew stayed in. Those familiar with Woodward's works know that Mark Felt had told him long before the bribery issue came to light that the FBI had proof of the former governot taking an envelope full of cash, and putting it into his desk drawer. Woodward told a co-worker, who followed Agnew, that the VP was on the way out more than a year before it actually happened. (It had nothing to do with his son or other nonsense.)

7. Bribery as MD Governor. |
|
They got him to plead nolo contendre to tax evasion.
Resignation happened in Oct, 1973. Nixon, under siege by Watergate, appointed a very uncontroversial Gerald Ford as Veep. It really had a profound effect on the rest of Nixon's Presidency. With a moderate Veep, the impeachment of Nixon could proceed apace, which is precisely what happened.

If Cheney is taken out somehow by medical reasons or by scandal we should expect Bush to nominate James Dobson as insurance right?
There's a thought.

It was also a different era for VPs. They were just hatchet men and stand-ins at funerals back then. The office didn't actually start doing anything until Gore came along.
