Court pick is dilemma for the Dems
http://www.thehill.com/thehill/export/TheHill/News/Frontpage/072105/court.html

After weeks of intense speculation about a looming Supreme Court showdown, Senate Democrats reacted with measured statements yesterday in the wake of President Bush’s surprise pick for the high court.

The lack of strong rhetoric from Democrats is an early indication that the nomination of John Roberts Jr. could attract a fair amount of bipartisan support.

(snip)

Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) said there is no doubt that Roberts has the legal qualifications to win confirmation. “The issue now is going to be whether Mr. Roberts possesses the wisdom and judgment and balance to serve this country for probably the next 20 to 30 years.”

(snip)

Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) called for hearings that will be fair and thorough and indicated that Specter had agreed to most of the terms Democrats had requested.

Schumer, one of three Democrats in the committee to oppose Roberts during his 2003 confirmation to the D.C. Circuit, referred to several of his own questions that Roberts declined to answer at the time. He issued a plea for Roberts to answer questions “fairly and openly” about his judicial philosophy and said questions about abortion and a right to privacy are important.

1. Roberts seems to be unwilling to answer questions

Most women are very upset that W appointed a male with anti abortion views to replace a woman who believed in women's rights.

It seems W wants to keep the SC white conservative males.

3. And it seems that many of the Dem men
don't mind that Roe is overturned so 'their strategy' can survive....

I am tired of fighting both the pugs and the dems on this issue.....thankfully Skinner spoke up and declared that we need to fight this nomination....

I am at a lose over why some Dem men want to roll over on this nomination....unless they really like women (their mothers, wives, sisters) to be oppressed. Is that it? Do men really need to oppress to feel like men? How sad....

2. PUFF PIECE ALERT
The Dems are flummoxed by the Rethug's brilliant pre-emptive strike. A moderate disguised as an extremist--what an original idea! All that needs to be done now is for the MSM to swing into action, planting stories about how it's all over before it's over...

4. Malloy was talking about Online Journal article on Roberts wife
I guess she facilitates global satellite system projects and is targeting Iraq reconstruction!
From the article:
"Meanwhile, her husband's numerous investments also include Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman. One wonders whether a Justice Roberts would have to recuse himself from any cases involving Iraq, including cases about profiteering; procedure regarding "detainees" rounded up in Iraq; Iraq contract fraud; and/or regulatory or other violations by satellite systems companies that hired his wife's firm or his wife herself.
