Why I can never be "Pro Life" |
|
Edited on Thu Jul-21-05 06:58 AM by DanCa
There are a million reasons why I can not label myself prolife and here are but a few. First I will say that I am a regular church goer and that I take my faith very seriously . And second that none of these reasons that I shall list have anything to do with the abortion isssue itself.
1) Seperation of church and state. I believe strongly that every american has the right to decide for themselves to believe in what they want they want. I also dont like the in your face attitude of the christian right wing its very disrespectful.
2) Those abortion photos. They scare little kids. And I dont want to be responsible for giving some little kid a night mare because I want to push people around and feel like a big man about it.
3) Abortion Cameras before I started going to an episcopal my old church wanted me to take pics of woman entering clinics, and then post them on anti abortion sites, along with patient information. Not only is this an invasion of privacy but some nut can get ahold of these telephone numbers and from there god knows what would happen to them.
4 stem cell research. I have parkinsons. Stem cell could not only cure my disease but so many more diseases thru said research and the cells that they use just get thrown away its insane. The strongest opponents of scr are within the prolife movement.
5. Prolife people insult people in the name of god drive people out of church and generaly promote the teachings of fear and hate that jesus didnt teach. Its a tool used by the republican party to voting into voting for them and thier cause.
6) Violence I will not give aide and comfort to domestic terrorist. Where do you think t he money you give to prolife causes? It goes to neal horsely and the army of god and the more militant branches of prolife movement.
7) I am a man. The only time I can ethicaly decide when a woman should have an abortion is prior to intercourse. If i dont want her to abort a baby than I shouldnt have sex.
8) Praying outside. I am not comfortable with public prayer
Note these are my opinions and I did not address abortion itself. It just another side of the abortion issue that doesnt get looked at and why i cant get part of it. Take care and have fun Danny.

1. You don't have to be a wingnut to be pro-life |
|
I consider myself pro-life, but I wouldn't do any of the things you listed. I personally wouldn't have one, or give my consent to my significant other to have one. Also, I don't know the circumstances of those that do have one. Who am I to judge them, I have enough trouble keeping up with myself.

3. You see by referring to the other side as pro-life... |
|
..we're feeding into their own propaganda. They are not pro life. They are pro fetus and pro birth. After that, most (though I'm sure not all) cease to care about the "life" of others.
The only way someone can truly call themselves pro life is if they are against abortion, against the death penalty, against war, and are pacifist in every aspect of their life. Anything less than that, it is not accurate to call that person pro-life. Anti-abortion, fine. Pro-Birth, fine. Pro-fetus, fine. But every time we refer to them as pro-life it gives them some sort of rhetorical moreal high ground that is not accurate nor deserved.

7. We need to reframe this-- it's not pro-life- it's anti- choice. |
|
And please folks- it's not pro-abortion, it's pro-choice. I cannot imagine that anyone who would not be considered pro-life. Nor are there many people who are actually "pro-abortion". Having an abortion is an agonizing decision for many women and should be alast resort (and used as as birth control). But the choice of whether or not to have an abortion needs to be made by the woman (or the couple)- not by the government.
What's sad is that many of the same anti-choice people are also anti-birth control education for teens (they think if we don't tell kids about it they won't do it and by not making birth control easily available to teens they won't have sex). These same people are also against federal funding for birth control distribution both here in the US and abroad.

another example about birth control. My nine year old niece is a hemophilliac. When she turns thirteen she need BC to regulate her period. Will the right to life crowd consider that before than birth control?
