Roberts' wife's law firm and Iraq Reconstruction involvement
Edited on Thu Jul-21-05 06:07 PM by BeHereNow
DUers, there is another point about Robert's nomination
that needs to be addressed. I did a little looking into
MS. Roberts and it gets interesting-
GO here:
http://iraqreconstruction.pillsburylaw.com/

Now consider the companies and their connections
to no-bid contracts in Iraq from this mis-administration
along with the Roberts nomination.
And tell me what YOU think about Roberts and
his nomination in light of this additional piece of the puzzle.

1. I kinda thought it would be the Mrs that was the main problem.
On John Kerry's website he is asking for questions for what we think should be asked of Roberts so you might want to submit this. Don't you ever wonder tho why they ask us what questions to ask when they are the ones in Wash and the ones who should know exactly what to ask? Wouldn't hurt to send this to him tho - might be the one he hasn't heard or thought of.

2. I'm contacting Waxman on this-
Edited on Thu Jul-21-05 06:10 PM by BeHereNow
It goes hand in hand with his work on Halliburton
if you ask me.
This is PAYOLA to the Roberts' for his wife's law firm
covering the horrendous abuse of the tax payer dollars
that have vanished in the Iraq rebuilding contracts.
In my humble opinion, THIS is the issue that should
block the nomination.
It's clearly a case of collusion.

12. Yahoo stocks has links to all of that-
But in a general way- for specifics look up the
SEC filings on the company and more importantly,
their subsidiary companies-
that is where they HIDE the questionable connections.

I guess I am not in a very good mood these days
about all of this- it just keeps getting more and
more outrageous.
Forgive my lack of humor-
I am sick of seeing this country being sold off
to the highest bidder.
We are being screwed daily and deliberately
misled on what the REAL issures are.
Sure, roberts is a right-wing nut case, but
even bigger than that is the fact that
he and his wife's firm are rewarded for funneling billions of tax dollars
into a black hole by being appointed to one of the most
serious positions in our judicial system.
It is fucking OUTRAGEOUS.

Conflict of interest drips from this nominee. From Judge Roberts invovlement with the 2000 Florida recount, to his lobbying effors for repub causes, to his wife as a war profiteer.

And I'm grateful to you for uncovering it, BeHereNow. Since discovering your thread I've been writing my senators about investigating the link between Roberts' nomination and his wife's position with a law firm involved in Iraq Reconstruction. I doubt this is coincidence but even if it is, it certainly casts strong doubt on how Roberts would handle any future Supreme Court case involving BushCo and the whole reconstruction fiasco. This self-evident conflict of interest should NOT be ignored by Congress when it comes to looking at Roberts for the SCOTUS.

46. Okay, I don't get it.
Pillsbury is a large international law firm. It looks like five of their partners have done some stuff regarding Iraq--how does that implicate Roberts' wife?

I'm a lawyer too, and also in a large international firm. If some partner does some shady work, does that implicate me? Sorry, I don't see it unless we can find a better connection than this.

(The work here isn't even all that shady, at least not at first glance. They look like pretty generic presentations, the kind of thing that a lot of lawyers do. The contracting one in particular is a pretty generic primer)

I used to work in DC for a firm that does a lot of Government Contracts work (don't worry, it's a good firm--Ruth Bader Ginsburg's husband practices there, super nice guy if you ever meet him). They put out similar stuff with respect to Iraq:

http://www.ffhsj.com/govtcon/ffgalert/gcarch/nb040905.htm
http://www.ffhsj.com/govtcon/ffgalert/gcarch/nb040403.htm

Again, I don't see this as a real issue unless there's a better connection that's found.

79. Sure
If Pillsbury represents clients who got Iraq rebuilding contracts, then that's certainly relevant. But then you've got to find the actual connection to the wife, because just saying they're in the same firm is not really a big deal.

81. What do you mean?
No, I'm not. Making scattershot attacks has no appeal to me. If there are good arguments to be made, there are good arguments to be made. But I want to see something more than the tenuous connection of Roberts' wife being in the same law firm as some guys who represent shady clients.

61. How many cases will he have to reccuse himself from??
Roberts, by way of his wife, is profitting from the war profiteering made possible from this administration.

He benifits from partisan political descisions.

Is this someone who should be sitting on the Supreme Court?

Feinstein and Dick are raking in the treasury dollars. So she supports the illegal war and draining the treasury to pay those (like Perini) who profiteer off it.

I posted this thread in the DU activist forum-
the replies are, for the most part based in brain oatmeal.
So be it- we have lost the country due to ignorance
and arrogance of the average American, "left" and
"right" who does not
know the law or care to learn.
SO BE IT-
The people of America WILL get the government
they deserve.
And so it is.

you know that is something repukies NEVER do to us.

(hahaha)

(i'm glad you're getting some response to this--i posted something about this last night/early this morning and ho hum, i didn't get too much response from what i remember. and i definitely think this is a major issue!)

on edit: this is what i posted
"July 21, 2005—Yet another first for our boundary-breaching White House: for the first time in American history, we're going to have a justice on the high court whose spouse facilitates financing and putting together global satellite systems.

"Also, the firm in which she is a partner, Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP, emphasizes among other things its expertise in facilitating business in Iraq:

"We offer one-stop service to clients pursuing projects in Iraq, from solicitation and RFP counseling to working with key government and multilateral agencies, and from initially penetrating the Iraqi marketplace to final project implementation. Our attorneys are recognized as leaders in their fields, and at the cutting-edge in a variety of disciplines relevant to Iraq reconstruction. A number have served in senior government positions in key agencies–including the Departments of Transportation, Navy, Justice and Commerce, as well as the Agency for International Development (USAID) and the World Bank."

68. Not attacking, pointing out the conflict of interest-
Perhaps if Michael Jackson or Lacy Peterson was
involved, it would register with DU masses who
are searching the point to argue his nomination
with.
What was I thinking?
Conflict of interest?
Collusion with Cheney/Halliburton?
Naw, let's look at his abortion rights records,
to hell with the ILLEGAL justifications regarding
his nomination.
I swear, at this point, I am seriously considering
the possibility that DUers are more brain damaged
than freepers.

i posted this earlier:

4158849, i guess it has to do with a conflict of interest
Posted by orleans on Thu Jul-21-05 02:21 PM

remember when the supreme court was going to decide if cheney should release the energy task force records? so cheney took scalia on a little hunting trip for a weekend. and when they got back scalia refused to recuse himself from the case--insisting he could be objective.

snip:
"He dismissed a call from the environmental group Sierra Club that he recuse himself because a January hunting trip he and Cheney took together gave the "appearance of impropriety."

"That trip came three weeks after the high court agreed to hear a case over whether the White House had to turn over documents relating to the energy task force Cheney headed in 2001.

"Under judicial rules, Supreme Court justices, unlike other judges, have the power to decide whether to remove themselves from cases. The justices have wide discretion since their decisions cannot be appealed."
http://www.cnn.com/2004/LAW/03/18/scalia.recusal /

and they decided cheney could keep his little records sealed.

if the supreme court starts making decisions on war/peace/the draft it might be a little conflict of interest that roberts has a wife whose law firm is making money off the war:

"Iraq Reconstruction

Pillsbury’s Iraq Reconstruction Practice is mobilized to offer clients strategic legal advice in their postwar reconstruction efforts. Comprised of lawyers from several offices and backgrounds with relevant legal, industry and regional experience, the team is well poised to support virtually every endeavor in post-war Iraq, including:

*Infrastructure development, construction and procurement
*Major project development and finance
*Energy (upstream and downstream)
*International trade (sanctions, licensing, export controls, customs, trade facilitation)
*Finance (bank lending, currency structuring, trade finance, sovereign debt, bank regulation, capital markets, structured finance, securitization, derivatives)
*Establishing legal frameworks, drafting statutes, regulations and bid procedures
*Privatization and regulatory advice
*Government contracting and relations
*Intellectual property, technology and outsourcing services
*Commercial law and general contracting
*Environmental compliance
*International tax
*Claims, litigation and arbitration
*Insurance
*Healthcare and pharmaceuticals"
http://www.pillsburylaw.com/go/areamaster.nsf/practices...

it's just a little too cozy to be given a lifetime appointment for decision making that effects the entire country and the world for the next thirty years.

U.S. judge limits use of fraud law against Iraq contractors
By Erik Eckholm The New York Times
WEDNESDAY, JULY 13, 2005

A federal judge has issued a ruling that will limit the applicability of a critical antifraud statute against corporate contractors in Iraq.

Judge T.S. Ellis 3rd of U.S. District Court in Alexandria, Virginia, held on Monday that the False Claims Act did not apply to the many contractors who were paid by the American occupation authority using Iraqi oil money.

The False Claims Act offers large rewards to corporate insiders who reveal misdeeds, and huge financial penalties can be imposed on errant companies. It is widely regarded as the government's most potent weapon against contractor fraud.

The district court decision, which is the first to provide guidelines in what has been a legal void, could derail some whistle-blower lawsuits that are in their early stages and still under seal, experts in the field of procurement law declared.
