I've been a long time reader and occasional poster here at DU since before 9-11. I have watched my country fall into the hands of corporatists (read fascists), thugs and warmongers. I continue to watch the world fall apart and can do nothing about it. I have joined in protests and try to inform people of what is really going on till I'm blue in the face. I have tried to keep hope through two stolen elections, the 9-11 show, an illegal war, increased "terrorism", the slaughtering of the constitution, torture, the wealthy and privileged increasingly raping the earth for their own greed, lies from our government, blatant hypocrisy, treason, unbridled apathy and stupidity as the norm (because we all know that the fact Paris Hilton took a shit today is more important and newsworthy than the outing of a CIA agent), increased poverty and racial bigotry, etc. etc. ad nauseum. However, it comes time to face the facts we're screwed.

I am a proud Liberal and will always be, but I find that we are our own worst enemies. We have no party (you are fooling yourself if you think the the Dems have any of our best interests in mind) to support us. We try contacting congresspeople (a waste of time since most of them have people that read and respond to our messages). We post here to try to enlighten people and to make our voices heard but what's the point? We are either preaching to the choir or bickering aimlessly among ourselves because this person bashes religion or something and they are labeled not tolerant enough or that person is too much of a conspiracy theorist and makes us look ridiculous (like the right wing bastards worry about how stupid they sound when they go off on us). It seems to me we have been so preoccupied with taking the high ground that we failed to see the enemy skirting under our noses and now have the upper hand. Face it they are far better at planning their ultimate goals than we are.

America does not want to care about anything but itself. I hold this whole world in utter contempt. I am tired of worrying and being outraged and pissed. I'm sick of being told to buy! buy! buy! We have allowed too much for too long and now it's biting us in the ass in a big way. The world sucks out loud and I hate it and everything that it stands for. I've washed my hands of the whole business, so see you on the other side.

5. Failure?

I remember a time, not very long ago, when the ChimpError and his ever greedy gangsters 'enjoyed' approval numbers somewhere close to 90%... Today, it seems the numbers are getting closer and closer to the toilet every single day... Who would have predicted such a huge slope to ever happen some 3 years ago? Now, for a real success to happen, one must never give up hope and, more importantly, one must never stop working for it no matter how long and difficult the road to the good and honest success is.

effectively using the internet because it merely existed in the early nineties. Well, perhaps also they're just beginning to 'try' to use it (re: 'the other site') but it seems they can't make their 'childish experiment' really work in their favor (re: 'the ever sinking approval ratings').

12. I can't disagree but....

There is a strength in disciplined fascism. And there is a vulnerability in free wheeling liberalism.

We should hope that our belief in our better way will ultimately allow us to prevail. We tolerate diversity and even laziness. But we wouldn't want a world without those things. Hang in. Ours is a better (and harder) way.

13. Come on, DoyBoy. I'm 62 and been through some shit both

personally and politically - it WILL pass, believe it or not, and we'll be a better nation for it because we've seen how close we came to ruining everything that makes our country the greatest. Think of the people who went through the Great Depression, and the millions of people in other countries where they NEVER have enough to eat and they watch their children die of starvation, for Christ's sake. That's what real gut wrenching depression feels like - we're just going through a "phase", but watching other people in other countries makes me feel like a real whimp - would I do any better than they - I really doubt it. Whatever your problems are, they are not as great as theirs. Snap out of it, and get back in the fight - we will prevail in the end.

But my response is to do whatever I can for someone less fortunate than myself. I sponsor a little girl in Cameroon, I'm contributing to organizations that help children (the most vulnerable in these awful times) and I keep seeking out ways to help people instead of worrying over the politics.

Volunteer to feed the hungry or build houses for the homeless or lobby your local government to preserve some wilderness. Don't just feel sorry for yourself.

Doing something--any little thing--goes a long way to dissipate that hopeless feeling.

I had a friend who felt like that back in the 1970s. She told me everything that was wrong with the U.S. and asked how her life could possibly be worse.

"Well, you could be living in Pol Pot's Cambodia," I remarked.

She was a thoughtful person, which is why she felt all the world's problems so badly, but I think that answer forced her to adopt a new perspective.
