Get to the witnesses. 91 members of Congress joined on letter to the president, urging pres to require Karl come forward immediately to explain his role or resign from administration.

Five suggestions that could easily get to the bottom of this, I add this one.

149. Questioning Karl would be a HUGE mistake.

Congressional hearings into Iran-Contra is what got Poindexter and North reversals of their convictions on appeal. Congress grants immunity to those testifying before it. The appeals court was not convinced the evidence obtained independantly of the Congressional hearings was sufficient to convict Poindexter and North by itself, and so their convictions were overturned.

I would actually like to see someone do jail time for breaking the law instead of just making temporary political hay out of it. As a DU thread pointed out the other day, Iran-Contra was dropped once the perps were out of power leaving the very same players in a position to resume power 8 years later. Had Poppy Bush been convicted for his crimes in Iran-Contra (and even more important, his blatant treason during the Iranian Hostage crises), his baby wouldn't be sitting in the White House today.

57. Rep Slaughter
Most important subject which occupies most of our minds.

GWB campaigned restoring dignity to WH. However time and events have conspired to reveal a different aspect of WH. Propensity to use power for personal and political advantage. security eroded. Secrecy.

Many incidents where admin failed to take responsibility or accountability..from invasion of iraq to Gitmo. 20 federal agencies used tax money to make fake news reprots. Time and time again let off by congress. Those who ask for accountability attacked as subversive dissidents.

Blowing Plame's cover done by WH officials. Startling abuse of power which jeapardized war on Terror and placed her contacts in danger, in a reprehensible act of retaliation.

Entire intel network destroyed. Security compromised .

Libby discussed id with reporters. Despite info we have, many questions remain. Who else in WH had access to classified memeo?

So many had access. Incumbent on congress, prosecutor and american people to ask what did pres know and when did he know it?

could they have know about plot to seek revenge at price of national security?

could pres and vp be responsible?

Sr. WH officials blew cover. Concerns gross abuse of power inside wh walls at highest level.

Full bipartisan investigation immediately.

Real world implications worse than Watergate. Not just dirty politicis but a compromise of nat' security during time of war.

Pres made promise to fire anyone who leakd
Edited on Fri Jul-22-05 09:35 AM by Mandate My Ass
pres broke that promise. One defining moment. Took an official stance. He unequivocally redefined standard of service at highest levels.

Abysmally low ethical threshold. Has to be convicted in court of law in order to be of concern to the pres.

Unchecked abuses of power. Misguided priorities. Diminished the office of presidency. Despite this, failed to receive answers. Accountability and justice have fallen by the wayside.

America deserves more than repeated, "no comment"

Valerie Plame and American public deserve bbetter.

114. Johnson: have to get beyond partisan madness . Col Lang
Dorgan: Lang has distinguished record. Special services etc. Highly decorated vet. Middle east specialist. First prof of Arabic lang at West Point. Distinguished executive award.

Lang-great pleasure to be here. I feel particularly strongly. Not on personal level. Disclosure and follow-up assault on US intel services. The prsent war, which will go on a long time, set of ideas that moves around. Enemies go into subway stations. They don't have technical signature, no overhead signature. They've gotten better at not doing things that make them vulnerable.

Need people to go after them. A peculiarity of this war. An assault on ability to do that. A case officer causes someone to trust them enough to put his life, fortune, honor in hands of case officer. US stands behind this case officer. Have done agreat deal of this in my life.

He will believe you will protect him. Extremely dangerous. Magicla moment, almost sacramental. THe kind of obligations are similar to seal of the confessional. The obligation to protect is absolute. Not just morality but practicality as well.

If a clandestine unit believe that US will not protect their confidentiality. Circle of doubt. Country that does not protect his own, they will not work for you. The more educated and capable will not work for you. Completely about trust. Kind of people who are valuable are a community of the well-informed. Situation awareness. These people pay attention to what's going on. THey know. Our former soviet opponents are good example that you have to do this right. No KGB ever gave up an agent. They would work forever to get him out. They knew recruitment would dry up and go away.

Instance like this, intell community but sponsoring country, for trivial reasons id a covert officer goes around the world like a shot. Americans cannot be trusted. Someone will give you up. So you don't do it. Jihadi groups will not trust you in this way. Possibility of penetrating this group will go down the drain and will be gone forever. Violation of trust.

Dealing with terrorist issues requires different kind of intelligence.

"Clandestine intelligence" Requires others to develop trust with the covert agent. Agent has obligation to protect their contacts then.

If agents can't depend on their superiors ... don't protect its own... don't protect foreign assets

This is all completely about trust

to the intelligence system.

Case officers, esp foriegn agents, have to believe superiors will protect their identities, protect their lives.

"This was a violation of trust."

I wouldn't be here if pres had done what he was supposed to and if he had upheld his oath to defend the consitution, delivered a stern warning to lay off and stop the attacks. Instead what we have seen is malicious disingenous smear campaigns. Wilson can defend himself but VP is unable to speak out publicly and correct the record.

When I see a group of men ganing up on a woman, that is a group of boys. Was classmates with Val Plame, from the day we walked in the door we were undercover. When her name was released, I only knew her as Valerie P. Even internally we were told to limit ID in order to protect our id. That's how serious it was.

col Lang noted, when you breach that trust, first time in US history a political operative leaked the name of covert officer for petty differences. Terrific damage to the United states.

Wilson and Plame did not ask me, but I value what she has done for this country. Moved to NOC, regardless you are undercover. When I left CIA, my cover was lifted. I was sitting at a desk but release of my name would have been breach. When she went to NOC, you do not have protection of US. But if caught, could be executed. No protection under Geneva Conv.

Lie I want to put to bed. RNC pepreptuating a lie. Even Hatch insists this is of no consequence. I will not stand for any official to launch unwarratned attacks and mislead the public.

We are told Valerie was just a desk jockey. People on Intel comm express such gross ignorance, maybe they were asleep.

Last lie I want to put to bed. Valerie sent her husband on mission to Niger. In Feb. 2002 when she allegedly sent him, admin did not have a clear objective, it mystifies me how a low-level officer could put in place a dastardly scheme to embarrass admin year and half later. Valerie was not a manager. Process works in this way, person comes back from mission meets with officers, then director of counterproliferation. Email to Valerie said "does your husband do this?" She sent one back. Only one we know about.

SEnate Intel committee so disingenuous, she is not a manager. No authorization to send anyone. Cannot spend taxpayer dollars. Central issue, she was down in the food chain but now in the crosshairs.

Back in 2000 I voted fo GWB. I wanted a pres who knew what the meanin gof "is" was. Sick of parsing words and refusal to admit the obvious. He was going to bring new ethical standards. Now he flip flopped on promise to fire anybody impliated in the leak. Never said anything about judicial process then. We now know Rove and Libby werer involved. Instead of being concerned with protecting country, sits by while officials smear people like Plame and Wilson > He could put a stop to it. He didn't.

What the meaning of leak is. The breach of trust to people whose secrecy we agreed to protect. WH shoul dbe committed to protecting American people. Dangerous war and we cannot expend our energy attacking citizens who simply told the truth.

155. Is there any MSM coverage of this event?
Is there at least some crews getting footage for stories later if not live coverage?

If the sheeple don't get to hear this in some way shape or form it will be as if it never happenned.
