The Bush administration in recent days has been lobbying to block legislation supported by Republican senators that would bar the U.S. military from engaging in "cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment" of detainees, from hiding prisoners from the Red Cross, and from using interrogation methods not authorized by a new Army field manual.

Vice President Cheney met Thursday evening with three senior Republican members of the Senate Armed Services Committee to press the administration's case that legislation on these matters would usurp the president's authority and -- in the words of a White House official -- interfere with his ability "to protect Americans effectively from terrorist attack."

The White House, in a further indication of its strong feelings, bluntly warned in a statement sent to Capitol Hill on Thursday that President Bush's advisers would urge him to veto the $442 billion defense bill "if legislation is presented that would restrict the President's authority to protect Americans effectively from terrorist attack and bring terrorists to justice."

The Republican effort is intended partly to cut off an effort by Senate Democrats to attach more stringent demands to the defense bill regarding detainees. One group, led by Sen. Carl M. Levin (D-Mich.), has proposed an amendment calling for an independent commission -- similar to the Sept. 11 commission -- to look into administration policies on interrogation and detainee abuse.

2. That just defies every sense of logic, doesn't it???

I'm totally convinced that people in the Bush administration must be sufering from sort of mental illness. It has to be mental illness. I don't see any other explanation for them thinking that in order to keep us safe, they have to torture people!

i mean, i have my talents and all, but what does it fu**ing take for the goodness in this country to rise up and kick the living crap out of office these nazis that have taken over?

4. Here's my explanation....

A lot of Ameriacans don't even realize what is going on in their own governement, and in their country.

Unfortunately, a lot of Americans are allowing themselves to be dumbed down. Many people still get their information in 30-second sounbites. Or, they get it by listening to talk radio (i.e. Rush Limbaugh) while driving the kids to soccer practice.

I honestly think this is the problem. People are just not informed--they aren't educated!

5. i caught a radio news blurb

albeit on AAR affiliate here about this story around 8pm tonite in my travel home. I knew it was a big deal, even with only 2 sentences or so the news offered.

i missed the nat'l news which did not probably carry this info, but still...

i'm sure you are right, most people don't know, or want to know what the truth is, until (TOO LATE!!) it affects one personally.

Formerly, they were more able to assassinate or maliciously prosecute at will. It's a good sign.
