My great aunt is 92, still sharp as a tack, and she follows the news. She was already an adult when Hitler came to power. She experienced some awful bombings during the Blitz in London, but spent most of the war raising her children in the countryside. In her long life she has probably witnessed the whole gamut of tyrants and despots. I asked her how the Chimp compared to Hitler during his rise. She said that "I always knew Hitler was a bad sort, right from the beginning; but George Bush frightens me." She did't elaborate any further.

4. It's a shame more people don't survive to that age with their wits |
|
about them. When your that close to the end of your life but still able to process and analyze information effectively, it must really put things in perspective. My own (American) grandfather, a staunch Republican all his life, began to question some of his own beliefs once he hit his eighties. I wonder if Bush Sr. is having some of the same last minute jitters.

5. My neighbor is about the same age as your great aunt -- and she |
|
is German. She and her husband escaped from Germany -- they saw what was happening and knew it was time to leave.
Ironically she also has made the same remark about W as your aunt does -- "George Bush frightens me".
What really disturbs her is that some of her very good friends (American born) are bushie supporters. She saw the same thing happen in the early days of Hitler's era -- nice normal people were taken in by Hitler.

An older lady at my UU church is from Germany. Old enough to be around the Nazi. And her family was Jewish. She sees then and now merging. She basicly sees the hate again but aimed at gays. She is scared for America, her gay friends, and anyone that isn't a fundies. She is not amused with Bush.

11. I heard from an 80-year-old French grandmother |
|
She turns off her TV when Bush is on the news, because she is so dismayed by what he's doing. She also has been reading up on Perle and Wolfowitz, and warned her grandkids (one of whom I know from work) that "those two were up to something" long before the Project for a New American Century was being talked about by Michael Moore, etc.
Her recently-deceased husband was old enough to remember watching WWI American doughboys marching by, as a toddler -- and of course, the liberation from the Nazis. He would just shake his head when he heard the hateful anti-French rants being spewed out by Bush's supporters.

12. I met an 80 year old woman |
|
Edited on Sat Jul-23-05 05:47 PM by Tommymac
last summer while campaigning for Kerry that said the same thing. She was Austrian...and she said she is seeing the same things happening in America that she saw in Austria and Germany in the 30's and was frightened. She was planning to return to Austria after spending 50 years here because she was frightened and did not want to spend her remaining years living through hell again. She said Bush was not as charismatic as Adolf, but he has the country snowed just the same.
