Sick! US soldiers in Iraq pose in Rush's offensive "Club Gitmo" gear

First Sergeant Paul Joseph and the 983rd Engineer Battalion, Camp Ramadi, Iraq which has now been renamed Club G'itmo East.

Gee, way to "win the hearts and minds" fellas. Check out the slogans on these t-shirts.

The Club G'itmo T-Shirt - My Mullah went to Club G'itmo and All I Got Was This Lousy T-Shirt

The Club G'itmo T-Shirt - Your Tropical Retreat from the Stress of Jihad

The Club G'itmo T-Shirt - I Got My Free Koran and Prayer Rug at G'itmo

I think someone in the US military should be made aware of this. It is just plain idiocy to have these guys posting inflammatory photos on the web. They are endangering their fellow soldiers.

14. I think we're all afraid to "criticize" the troops.
We learned from the Vietnam experience that criticizing the troops fighting in an unjust war just damages the anti-war movement. It gives the hawks alot of ammunition. Now, it seems as though the troops are realizing this and they're really getting away with alot.

8. These asswipes are reservists from Ohio.
I'm an Airborne Ranger combat vet and these punks make me puke.

The best thing to do is write to your Conress reps and ask them why this squad from the 983rd is not supporting Army directives.

This group of troops apparently feel torture is a big joke. I guarantee the Army doesn't think so.

So I am going to write to my Congress people and let them know what I think about this. Please do the same and tell them that Limbaugh should be pulled from Armed Forces Network.

This might be the time to get Pigboy off of AFN. Complain to your Congressmen/women and we might get Oxyboy off of AFN.

Show your Congressmen/women how Rush is affecting the mission. This photo shows that Limbaugh's hateful rants encourage soldiers to disregard Army directives.

29. Here's my letter to my Senator.
Edited on Sat Jul-23-05 09:44 AM by tabasco
Dear Senator Mikulski:

I am writing to ask you to help remove Rush Limbaugh's hateful rhetoric from the Armed Forces Network (AFN). Limbaugh's hate mongering makes it more difficult for our military leaders to accomplish missions in Iraq. Particularly, Limbaugh encourages troops to disregard military directives on the treatment of non-combatants.

I recently observed a photograph which can be seen on the internet at: (the link to the photo).

This photograph shows soldiers from the 983rd Engineer Battalion (reservists from Ohio) wearing t-shirts sold at the Rush Limbaugh website. These t-shirts make a joke out of prisoner abuse at Guantanamo Bay and other US facilities. Limbaugh has constantly characterized the incidents of prisoner torture as harmless pranks. This while military leaders are attempting to convey to troops the necessity for humane treatment of non-combatants. If these soldiers are proud to wear these shirts, I am afraid that they are not in full support of military directives. I believe this conduct is a direct result of the broadcast of Limbaugh's radio show on AFN.
I request that you do whatever you can to have Limbaugh's hateful radio broadcast removed from the AFN lineup. I am a combat veteran myself and believe this broadcast is hurting our chances to accomplish the mission in Iraq.

Thank you for your efforts.

Sincerely,

tabasco
Major, US Army (IRR)

With your kind permission sir, transcribed and sent to my two senators. This sounds like a perfect candidate for DU activists action.Twould be nice to flood the capitol with protest letters. Not that it would shut the fat pig up, but his removal from AFN( what's he doing there in the first place?) might give him pause to temper his remarks some.

in getting ALL of your troops KILLED, those who return will present with
"issues" that YOU ARE NOT PREPARED FOR NOR HAVE ANY SUPPORT TO HANDLE, thanks to the BILLION DOLLAR SHORTFALLS in V.A funding.

American troops have been INDISCRIMINATELY, brutalizing, humiliating, abusing and murdering Iraqis since Day One of this illegal, ungodly invasion. THAT is a fact. "The chick got in the way." And as they have conducted themselves towards Iraqis, they have conducted themselves similarly against their own. WHO remembers that Shoshanna Johnson's unit had to "vouch" for her upon their rescue? SHE was psychically brutalized by some "good ol' white-boy-in-charge" who couldn't seem to figure out her AMERICAN SOUTHERN ACCENT and subjected her to the same treatment many receive DWB.

The PNAC signatories have built their bunkers, publically stated their plans and pulled the pin on the grenade while YOU, my former compatriots, argue about women's sovereignty over their own bodies and FUCKING VIDEO GAMES...

I remember also there was this white petite girl who was in the army and she was raped by some men in her unite. She tried to tell people about it but so many freepers and the like just called her awful things and said she was a lesbian who hated our troops and was trying to be famous or some crap like that. It really pissed me off!!! I never heard what happened with her case. She was trying to get some justice but nobody was taking her seriously enough.

I do support the troops- but not their mission despite thefrightwingshriekers who say you can't do that. I just think they'd be a lot easier to support if they were a lot closer to home. My support extends only to fervent wishes that all the poor dumb grunts there now get home safe and sound, in one piece, and as sane as any war experience will let you be. Beyond that they're volunteers and on their own. These guys however, are beyond the pale- despite that my stated support applies.Wonder what a copy of this photo sent to the hometown newspaper of this unit would accomplish?

94. It's Easy To Get Caught Up And Chewed Up
I've talked to several returning Iraqi vets recently and, while they will speak publicly in favor of this invasion, they are very much against what is going on there and how bad things have gotten. The common thread is not speak bad of your fellow soldiers, no matter the service, no matter the rank, while they're still in "the shits". I saw a similar mindset in Viet Nam and see many who confuse this "esprit de corps". I'm not condoning it, just observations.

We need to support the vast majority of armed forces that are being drained of their health and treasure in this obscene and immoral plundering. Many of those who signed up did so without a lot of the knowledge we have now along with the strong wave of flag waiving that came in the wake of 9/11. Many didn't expect the extended stays or stop losses or cuts in benefits. Others saw a bad economy and saw this as a better way. These people are the greatest victims as they were taken and will continue to be for the rest of their lives...and that doesn't count the personal agony and PTSD so many current are and will experience as this quagmire slogs on.

Cheers and welcome to DU...

I have been in the military, I know these people and I know the mentality. When I was in I heard the comments like "Sand Niggers, Rag Heads and Camel Jockeys. Look in the media. Abu Garhaib, GITMO, what more proof do you need that these people do not care of human values? I was in 10 years and fought this every step of the way. Not easy to be a bleeding heart liberal in the military. What kind of a human being would rejoice at the death of civilians? AND you dare to question my experience with these "people"? I will tell you right now, go enlist and see the dregs of society that you will meet. And buster you have enraged me almost as much as these people who perpetrate these crimes. For gods sake how much more do you need to endure before you see it's not a "few bad apples'?

But sadly, assholes like this are emboldened when you have official policy coming directly from the White House that CONDONES torture.

Pictures like this are nothing more than recruiting tools for new ranks of suicide bombers, and if the US military has ANY brains they would put an immediate stop to this type of crap, and they would boot Rush's fat ass off of Armed Forces Network radio. One hour of Limbaugh's show is aired daily.

Where are the troops muttering under their breath: "Oh, great, guys. Just GREAT. Nice one. Thanks a lot."

Well, first of all, my husband has never even heard of this shit before so it is pretty difficult to express disgust if you are unaware of it. Not until I passed it onto him. And the other soldiers he works with haven't either.

Second, if they are muttering under their breath, then you won't hear them. And many will only mutter.

Third, how are you going to hear about the troops that are not afraid to say outloud that they are angry? The MSM certainly isn't going to tell you about it.

No one is more tired of the soldiers torturing people, no one is more tired of the rotten eggs tarnishing the reputations of all soldiers than the soldiers themselves -- soldiers that would never do this shit.

If the MSM (heh) ever showed soliders being "disgusted" by this then Rush will be mad and he will get other people mad at Bush and everything. Plus, the soliders are supposed to support Bush since we're in war and things like that. This is why guys like in the photo's are getting away with this. They can say "oh we're supporting the president!" or "You can't do that, we're in war!! You don't support the troops!" and all that other BS.

You have to wonder just who they've tortured.

If the shirt doesn't offend you, torturing another human couldn't possibly.

I've absolutely no use for people like that. I DON'T support any troops who would wear that t-shirt.

37. More photos- next generation of torturers in training?

Seth and Nate with the Club Gitmo resort model they built with blocks and legos - Lexington, KY.

Conner, 13 years old -- Houston, Texas.

Dan, age 14, and Mike, age 10,
at EIB Summer School on the left coast.

Nice to see that Repugs instill their "values" in their children, isn't it? Seriously, though, isn't it sick that someone would want pictures of their CHILDREN condoning torture posted on the internet?

51. Hey, Conner, sweetie face
You're 13. That means in 5 years, you'll get to go to Iraq, or Syria, or Iran. You'll get to travel, yippee! And, if there's not a draft, you can sign up for a big bonus. It may help with rehabilitation expenses if you lose, say, an arm, a leg, maybe get your cutie little face blown halfway off.

Thank you, Conner, for defending your "Bring 'em on" leader.

Dan only has 4 years to go. I bet he can't wait.

It that these so called "paragons of virtue" such as Bennett and Limbaugh do NOT EVER hold THEMSELVES accountable.

I think such people appeal to those dark and dank recesses of mental adolescents who idolize bullies and unbridled authority.

My first two years active duty I was like "the rest" - hard corps and spouting the rhetoric. However, most people with conscious break with a "collective military." That is, even lifers know that the hype is all for boot camp transformation and discipline.

Fear not with the GITMO gear on these troops. The ones who buy into the power and violence will be later be ostracized by society and haunted by their demons ... the moment they return back to "the world" (USA).

I hope Limbaugh does go to jail. When it was revealed that he was a *drug addict* I would have bet my paycheck that he would resign and/or be fired.

Unfortunately, people such as Rush Limbaugh are wholly devoid of compassion and humanity ... No Sir! They have NO SHAME. :(

45. It's not the soldiers' fault. It's the warmongers' faults.

Yes it's bad PR for our troops to be seen in anti-Islam T-shirts.

I don't blame the soldiers though. They are not diplomats. They are trained to kill. Their commanders are trained to use whatever techniques will make them singleminded and confident that they are there to protect America and to unthinkingly do whatever it takes to protect each other. T-shirts help. Camaradie helps.

There's worse than these pictures. Listen to their cadences. One is titled "Napalm sticks to kids". They get taught that during training. Nobody at FoxNews is teaching that.

Don't blame the soldiers for being poor diplomats. Blame the politicians who mistakenly push the philosophy that Vietnam or Iraq were military missions with military solutions and somehow the diplomacy of soldiers handing out candy or building a school is part of a military/diplomatic solution.

They don't have food and they run out of gold.
So how I earn my living.
Is killing the baby seals.(arp, arp)*
You can wack 'em with a shovel, you can hit 'em with a brick.
Poke 'em in the eyes, with your eye-poking stick.
That's how I earn my living.
Killing the baby seals.(arp, arp)
You can stab 'em, shoot 'em, rototill 'em.
Any old way that you wanna kill 'em.
That's how I earn my living.
Killing the baby seals.(arp, arp)
Slice em, Dice Em, filetmignon em
Any old way is how you serve em
That's how I earn my living.
Killing the baby seals.(arp, arp)
Wife and kids, they all hate me.
Liberals they ant to rape me.
But that's how I earn my living.
Killing the baby seals.(arp, arp)

Demand accountability. Demand it! Now! We can sit her and post until we are blue in the face but nothing will happen. NOTHING has happened. This is an outrage. These pictures need to be splashed on the front page of every major newspaper in this country. The reason they get away with this crap is because no one calls them on it. The vast majority of the American public would be APALLED by these pics. Anyone with a shred of common sense knows that these pictures put a huge black mark on this country. Where are our leaders? Where are they? Demand accountability.

72. Get Up On a Soapbox Anyone?
Thanks for the links PA Democrat.

Did everyone notice the Soapbox column that allows you to post an issue to the website. I thought discussing Rush's hateful and dangerous rhetoric and traitorous t-shirts on this would be a good idea and get some attention - plus, it looks like the feature allows people to email their congresspeople with a click on the issue. When I tried to set up a Soapbox I found that, unfortunately, it costs money (~$6) that I don't have right now.

If anyone has the time and money, perhaps they could put something up?

cheers,
C4T

91. Sorry, not me
I don't have a measly $6 either! Plus, I'd be afraid my name could be viewed publicly and as a soldier's wife that would not make me happy. He would willingly put up with anything the army dished out, but then he likes to ruffle feathers with his political views that are supposed to be kept quiet. Over the past couple of years, it doesn't ruffle many feathers though. Very few in fact. Many are silently nodding.

But anyway, I'm sending an email to Sen. Byrd. I'm not too good at writing to people, but any suggestions on the following?

Dear Senator Byrd,
I am writing to you, a member of the Armed Services Committee, as the spouse of a U.S. soldier. My husband has served his country for the last 10 years and continues to serve his country. While there are many issues to complain about with the current administration and their war in Iraq, I am actually writing about something that sounds trivial comparatively.

Are you aware that Rush Limbaugh is selling clothing with a 'Club Gitmo'label and that troops in Iraq are wearing these articles? At least, according to his website:
http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/eibessential/illustrating_absurdity/tshirts.guest.html
These t-shirts feature anti-Muslim slogans and other offensive material. While it is Limbaugh's right to sell what he wants
and it is Americans' rights to buy the clothing, it is doing a huge
disservice to our country to have soldiers in Iraq sporting these slogans. Soldiers who are supposedly bringing freedom and democracy to the Iraqi people are only fueling hatred by wearing these slogans. How can this be condoned?

That's my first draft or what I have so far.

in removing the levity of the situation. The lessons of Vietnam are now having to be re-learned. Winning the hearts and minds of an enemy may not be possible, but poking your finger in someone else's eye doesn't jibe with Dale Carnegie's How To Win Friends and Influence People Either. Both Bush and OBL should read that one !

Bush should be lambasteing jihadis ideology (those who want to return to the caliphate). You don't hold real estate with occupation or terror. Mutual trust and respect are the basis of peace at the minimal level, as with the Cold War policies towards the Russians.

The last time I checked, it was we, the people, who pay the troops for being in the military. Rush Limburger should not have this kind of access to our troops, and-or, they should be smart enough not to buy into this kind of fascism. Since the republican takeover, our country is in the worst shape it's ever been in history.

I've had a lot of military guys in class, and they want to believe we are doing good for people over there, and are disturbed by Gitmo and Abu Ghraib abuses, whether they think they were done by the mythical "few bad apples" or allowed by those further up the food chain (like the White House).

Soldiers don't get to choose where they fight in a democracy--we do, by who we elected and what we allow those elected officials to do.

But it certainly does not help that soldiers are only exposed to right wing talk radio in Iraq, that the DoD put out an order last fall that the TV's on army bases, in training rooms or motor pools or wherever (my husband's military but I don't pay much attention to that stuff!) only be allowed to air FOX News.
