Judge a Society by How It Treats Its Most Vulnerable Members

A teacher at the school I student taught in had a poster in her room with that slogan. It's really stuck with me as sort of a catch-all motto for Global liberalism.

Here's the US scorecard...

little chance of universal healthcare
stem cell research on hold
"welfare queen" mythology
unequal school funding by income/neighborhood (race!)
incarceration of poor
letting mentally ill go homeless
working poor
single mom's
efforts to criminalize women who seek abortions - while offering no viable alternatives for them

I'm sure the list can go on...

has wrought upon this nation and its people, a cornucopia of the true values of so-called compassionate conservatism.

3. Incarceration of the disabled (physically or mentally)

Quite often medicaid and other "public assistance" will not pay for nursing, ventilators, feeding tubes, etc. if a person lives at home as opposed to a nursing home or other facility. Also, many people risk getting their benefits reduced or even cut off if they refuse to live in a group home, nursing home or other facility rather than a home of their choosing.

In time, we will reverse all of these trends.

We must. If we don't, our children and grandchildren won't be able to. We have an opportunity, however long the odds, to keep this country from going the way of the Third World.

The more poverty they create, the better off they are on election day. The less educated a man is, the less he examines, reads, and questions. The poorer and sicker a man becomes, the less he calls on logic. His thoughts turn to the afterlife. Televangelists prey on such people.

My 2 cents, anyway.

7. When I was a little boy

I was taught two things:

{1} Think for yourself, act for others.

{2} If society treats the very young and very old properly, everything else falls in place.

If we look at the treatment of little children and the elderly, the truth becomes evident. The idea that the republicans are the party of "family values" is exposed as a shameful joke.

I'm not against religion as much as I'm against the Calvinist contempt for the less fortunate and leaving them as pariahs, worthy of contempt and persecution and derision.

This country could be so progressive by just recognizing and attempting to help those in need. The society could only benefit with such an overall program.
