I just read about the children at Abu Gharib

I hadn't known about that, did you?

What they did to the children. And taped it.

My hand goes up to stop the images, my hands cover my ears to keep from hearing the screaming, the children screaming.

I do not want to see it, I wish I had not read about it,

because it made me cry, and then anger at those who caused this to happen, anger at those in power who knew this took place and have done nothing.

So unspeakably horrible, under the American flag and in the name of God these atrocities occurred.

The sound of the children screaming.

We must force our leaders to sit and listen and watch those tapes and answer our questions and pay for their crimes,

or those screams will spread and grow louder and they will include our own.

Edited on Sun Jul-24-05 07:31 AM by PDittie
Tha's the title of the article at that kos link, for those who haven't clicked it yet.

I suppose that when you go to war based on a blanket of lies, you can justify anything, even sexually brutalizing children as the spoils of that war. What next?

What's left to rape, after we have taken Iraq's oil, her children, and the Constitution of the United States?

11. And the people who need to be reading this are in church
right now. They're not going to read it in their local newspaper; they're not going to see it on FOX, they're not going to hear about it from Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity or Bill O'Reilly on the radio.

If we don't get these fuckwads out of power, we're all going to go up in an explosion.

London and Egypt are coming here, and not too long from now.

5. unbelievable............
Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld told Congress last year, after viewing a large cache of unreleased images: "I mean, I looked at them last night, and they're hard to believe.” They show acts "that can only be described as blatantly sadistic, cruel and inhumane," he added.

A Republican Senator suggested the same day they contained scenes of “rape and murder.” No wonder Rumsfeld commented then, "If these are released to the public, obviously it's going to make matters worse."

Yesterday, news emerged that lawyers for the Pentagon had refused to cooperate with a federal judge's order to release dozens of unseen photographs and videos from Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq by Saturday. The photos were among thousands turned over by the key “whistleblower” in the scandal, Specialist Joseph M. Darby. Just a few that were released to the press sparked the Abu Ghraib abuse scandal last year, and the video images are said to be even more shocking.

40. Dear Senators,
Knowing what you know about the atrocities at Abu Gharib, you have chosen to remain silent. Every day of silence widens the gap of trust between you and your constituents. Furthermore, if you have not yet began proceedings to pursue these war criminals at the highest levels, then you too are a party to the crime. Any American who has an inkling of what you knows of this pattern of torture would feel equally strongly about it as I do. Soon the truth will come out, and more people will ask the same questions I'm asking. Can you afford that? Could you live with doing nothing?

nobody is actually DOING anything to stop it.
some people are doing something to stop the PICTURES.
there will be a little outrage here and there when they are released.
but will anything ACTUALLY be done?
why wait for the pictures?
A iraqi child is being raped while we wait..
Those brave american soldiers BEATING AND RAPING A CHILD infront of their parents.
but will anything ACTUALLY be done...
how many raped and beaten american children would it take for this to stop?
By the american governments logic "the world" should pre-emptively strike any american they see?Because in 45 minutes they are likely to turn into CHILDRAPISTS...

14. as it is
the rest of the world knows. The impression is that the American people don't care. Add to this the fact that many in Congress have seen and done nothing and Bush's "reelection" after torture was exposed. It all reflects very poorly on Americans and their 'leaders'.

slap some more Support the Troops stickers on their SUV as absolution. I told my office mate that these pictures and videos were coming out soon and her immediate response was, "I won't look at them". Denial's a powerful thing.

46. And, don't forget
These children aren't white Christian babies, so any mistreatment of them is not as bad as if they were "our" children.

Although, considering some of the commentary and reactions we've heard after the disclosures in the Catholic molestation scandal (in which little outrage arose by official reports noting that a 6-year-old victim was acting seductive in front of the priest and thus must have deserved being raped, and you've got folks like Santorum blaming the whole shebang on liberals in Boston), sodomizing children isn't going to raise much ire.

And since we know the administration
doesn't give a crap about our soldiers
or the blowback it could create towards them,
I can only choose to think that the reason they
are in fear of releasing them is that they know
we, the people, would demand that all of them resign.

I can not for a minute think that the
American people would tolerate a second
more if they knew and saw the proof.
I have to believe that we would rally together
as a people and say NO.

18. Defense Department Refuses to Turn Over Abuse Photographs; Asks to File
Secret Brief Justifying Refusal:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Contact: media@aclu.org

NEW YORK -- Today was the day the government was supposed to process and redact photographs and videos relating to the abuse and torture of prisoners held abroad. Raising new arguments on the eve of its deadline, the United States government refused to release the materials to the public. The photographs and videos were to be processed for eventual release as a result of a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and other organizations.

"The government is raising newfound reasons for withholding records to which the public has an undeniable right," said Amrit Singh, a staff attorney with the ACLU. "Instead of releasing these records and holding officials accountable for detainee abuse, the government now seeks to shield itself from public scrutiny by filing these reasons in secret."

In a letter filed at the eleventh hour, the Department of Defense claims that photographs and videos of abuse that the court had previously ordered redacted for future release "could result in harm to individuals" for reasons that will be set forth in a memorandum and three declarations that the government will file under seal with the U.S. District Court of the Southern District of New York.

Under the government’s proposal, the documents explaining the government’s reasons for withholding the images of abuse will not be available to the public except in redacted form, and the photographs and videos may never be made public.

27. Republicans are now officially the pro- Child Anal Rape Party
Hunter on Kos has an excellent rant. Like, how can republicans possibly defend this? It must mean they are pro child rape. As Hunter wrote:

In reference to a number of posts below... To be honest, I don't even care if this effort looks partisan anymore. If being anti-child-sodomy is now considered the partisan position, then I'm going to be the biggest f---ing partisan on the planet, and to Hell with anyone who isn't.

I'm tired of all of it. Just tired. I'm tired because the rest of the world has known this for a year, and we refuse to discuss it in this country. And in truth, we can't discuss it in this country without the (heavily censored) pictures, because without the pictures, the horrible, horrible actual pictures, the loathsome, brick-stupid f---ing news media doesn't see a story. And without the pictures, every bloated, pill-popping, corpse-like Rush Limbaugh clone in America will continue to claim it's all lies, all exaggerated, all phony.

29. As sick as this song is, we must keep reminding America...
Until they finally reach their breaking point.

And I wrote this song, so I know it's gallows humor.

So key up a karaoke version of Rawhide and sing along, though your heart breaks!

Rollin', rollin', rollin'
Keep that prisoner rollin'
'Til that towelhead's showin
No hide!

At Abu Ghraib they're dyin'
While Rumsfeld, he's denyin'
And Code Pink wants some firin'
Of his hide

But Bush got "re-elected"
The prisoners are dejected
Their fate has been selected
No hide!

Strip 'em down
Kick a butt
Stack 'em up
Crack a nut
Take a pic
Show it off
No hide!

Chain him down
To a bed
Put some panties
On his head
Rabbit punch
To the gut...
No hiiiiiiiiiiiiide!
No hiiiiiiiiiiiiide!

NO HIDE!

41. Years from now people will ask us, just as "ordinary Germans"
of a particular generation were asked, "what did YOU do to oppose George W? What did YOU do when the pictures were released?"

IMHO, "ordinary Germans" had more of an excuse than we do...we have the Internets, "ordinary Germans" during WWII had only the BBC (if they were well off enough to have a shortwave radio and regular access to electricity) and the controlled German media.

Americans CHOOSE to remain ignorant of what is being done in all of our names. It seems Americans are more concerned about Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes than they are of the daily abuse being inflicted upon the innocent citizens of a once sovereign nation.

For shame.
