Overflow Crowds; 100s Turned Away For Downing Street Memo
Public Forums:
How the United States Marked the 3rd Anniversary of the Downing Street Memo
By David Swanson
AfterDowningStreet.org

Hundreds of people were turned away today as capacity crowds packed public forums in U.S. cities to discuss the Downing Street Memo and related evidence that President Bush lied about the reasons for war. Halls were filled to capacity and beyond in LA, Oakland, Seattle, Detroit, Northampton, New York, and elsewhere, for events led by Congress Members, including Maxine Waters, Barbara Lee, Jim McDermott, John Conyers, and Maurice Hinchey.

For the second time in the two months since we launched the www.AfterDowningStreet.org campaign, I've been overwhelmed by what we've tapped into. The first time was when we put up a website about the Downing Street minutes and a demand for an investigation into grounds for impeachment. I'd never seen a coalition grow so quickly or a website receive so much traffic. Today we saw crowds of people in red and blue states chant "Impeach Bush!" at events with leaders not yet ready to use the I word. The much maligned American Public is way out ahead of us - I'm telling you.

I need to get outside the Beltway more! Today I did so, briefly. I drove over and spoke at an event in Montgomery County, Maryland. The questions I got from the crowd were along the lines of "Why is it so hard to get a Democrat from a solidly Democratic district to introduce articles of impeachment? What are they waiting for?"

It's a hell of a question. They know that a Zogby poll in the end of June - the ONLY poll done on impeachment of Bush - found that 42 percent of Americans (meaning a strong majority of Democrats) favor impeachment if the President lied about the reasons for war. They know that 52 percent believe he did in fact so lie, according to ABC/Washington Post.

What are they waiting for?

"At an event in Detroit with Congressman Conyers, constitutional law professor Bob Sedler asked the crowd if Bush had committed impeachable offenses, and the whole room shouted "YES!"

7. "Impeaching Bush is every American’s business"

Impeaching Bush is every American’s business!

Many Americans from both political parties find themselves questioning the direction the country is headed. There are plenty of reasons for their feelings, and enumerating those reasons is not the thrust of this website- there are thirty zillion other places on the web for that.

What I’d like you to think about is this: How far would you be willing to stick your neck out to assert your opinion, when it is
controversial? It’s easy to rant anonymously on the web. It’s still pretty unrisky to join a crowd of like minded people and hold up a sign.

How about if you held your opinion so strongly that you would risk your standing in your own community, and your very
livelihood, in order to satisfy a loftier need to communicate an unpopular but very necessary opinion?

Case in point: Would you put a 20-foot sign on the roof of your business, with “Impeach Bush” boldly spelled out in three-
foot letters? Would you risk five years of struggle, starting the business from scratch with no money, then put this sign up right as it is becoming successful? If you wouldn’t go all-out like this, would you put a smaller sign up at work? At home? On your car?

Whether you are a business owner or not, the direction of the Bush administration is YOUR BUSINESS as an American! If

you feel he is right, do nothing- the mainstream media are still on your side, apparently. If, however, you feel that the Bush administration is taking our great country down a path of disaster and destruction, I implore you to break the silence and speak out NOW! Get your message out into the public! If you feel strongly about this, now is the time to act on your beliefs.

I would like to ask you to put your feelings in writing, and get them out in public! Take a picture and submit it here. I’d like to
show the world that average Americans are NOT unanimously behind Bush! Now is the time for American patriots to use the free speech that is our birthright, and stand up to make our opinions heard in our own communities, across the nation, and around the WORLD!

If you have a picture you would like to be posted, use the submit form. Join other patriotic Americans who care more about
the future of our country, than we do about the possibility of ostracism in our own communities. Any picture of a prominent anti-bush sign is welcome. If you choose to include your own image, so much the better, Patriot! Perhaps you saw the website right after the election, with thousands of Americans pictured holding signs (often just a sheet of notebook paper) apologizing to the world for Bush. This is a similar idea, calling for the IMPEACHMENT of Bush!
