1. You are not nice
He is an exceptional human being, who stared almost certain death in the face, and not only did he beat the cancer that nearly killed him, he has become the most accomplished athlete of our time, maybe even of all time. So, and I mean this nicely, blow it out your (r)ear.

8. I'm not meaning it personally. But they ran the exact same story last year
There's got to be fresh inspirational stories out there. I just think the sports writers are being lazy. If you want to see a fresh 'triumph over adversity' sports story, go see "Murderball."

Edited on Sun Jul-24-05 11:16 PM by FreedomAngel82
There is a guy in south Ohio who's running for Congress for the first time. He's an Iraq veteran who is running as a democrat. So should he not run since he's never had any experience before? :eyes: If he knows how to balance a budget and turn that state around I say "hell yeah". Maybe he can turn Texas blue again.

15. Yes he is a democrat
I think he's a moderate? And he and Sheryl Crow I believe both supported John Kerry last election. I know Sheryl did because she performed at Kerry's election night party. Only thing my Mom doesn't like about Lance is he left his wife for Sheryl and did adultery. My dad's a huge fan of Lance's. I always tease him that Lance is his idol cause my dad is a huge bike freak. He always watches it and never misses it.

Lance didn't meet Cheryl Crow until after he and his wife had filed for divorce (and that after a serious attempt at reconciliation). I call that adultery in name only.

25. Kerry's not sure Armstrong is a Democrat
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/07/24/AR2005072400334_pf.html

SAINT-ETIENNE, France -- Sen. John Kerry thinks Lance Armstrong would make a terrific politician _ but fears he'd be running for the other party.

Watching Armstrong during his warmup for Saturday's time trial, the Democrat from Massachusetts listed the Texan's winning qualities.

"What's made him so special at the Tour de France, and as an athlete, is the level of focus, discipline, intelligence, strategic ability, and obviously, his endurance _ his ability to just take it on and go," Kerry said.

Those qualities would serve Armstrong well in politics, Kerry said. But Armstrong is also friendly with fellow Texan President Bush.

6. I applaud him for all that he's accomplished.
The one thing I noticed about him is, he's very humble. After the win today, the OLN reporter was asking him about how people will be inspired by him (or something like that) and all he talked about was the people who inspired HIM.

I just hope he's made a lot of money off of this.

I like that too. He's always polite as well. At least, if he does run for the governorship of Texas, they'll have someone who has manners finally. No bills in church's and no 150 executions.

22. Felt compelled to initiate a post - jealous of Lance or what?
What possible reason could there be to (even sarcastically) criticize the deserved attention of a person so dedicated to something that he is the best in the world at it for 7 years running - in SPITE of personal issues working against him. I must be missing something here...

30. I have been pulling for him to lose for the last four years
Is it jealousy? I am a bicyclist with about 25,000 miles on me, but I cannot stand people who win all the time. Especially something like the Tour de France which is just about impossible to even finish, let alone win. Then there is all the stupid blather like "it goes to show what you can accomplish ..."

No it does not, because all the other cyclists who have trained for the last thirty years have not been able to accomplish what Lance did. So it goes to show that no matter what you do, there is probably going to be a Lance Armstrong out there who will beat you every single stinking time. I do not find him to be inspirational, I find him to be depressing and nauseating. He's an over-cat, and I do not like those.

32. I think you'll like this story

Harrison Bergeron

by Kurt Vonnegut (1961)

THE YEAR WAS 2081, and everybody was finally equal. They weren’t only equal before God and the law. They were equal every which way. Nobody was smarter than anybody else. Nobody was better looking than anybody else. Nobody was stronger or quicker than anybody else. All this equality was due to the 211th, 212th, and 213th Amendments to the Constitution, and to the unceasing vigilance of agents of the United States Handicapper General.

35. No, I never liked that one. Did not see the point.
I was probably more conservative when I read it.
Plus, that is more a caricature of what I said. If seven different people had won the last seven Tours de France, that would hardly make the whole world equal. Every rider in that race is a very elite biker. So Lancelot is the elite of the elite's elite. That is not the kind of person that I root for. My idea of an inspiring race is when that Greek postal carrier smoked all those world champions in the womens 400 meter hurdles in the last Olympics. I am not going to root for her to win the next 8 world championships, but that hardly means that I think nobody should run faster than anyone else.

..."No matter what you do someone somewhere will be a million times better tthan you, the lesson is never try"

"
I do not find him to be inspirational, I find him to be depressing and nauseating"

Yes, getting cancer in the prime of your career, given 50% survival chances, beating said cancer via surgery(including his brain) and chemo, then getting back on the bike and winning your sport's most important race, not once but 7 times in a rowis cause for nausea.

Do you root for the Grinch or what?

i feel roughly the same. but then i feel the same about all sports stories, especially when they lay the heroic melodramatics pretty thick. ain't his fault, he doesn't control the media (us evil liberals do!). but, outside of finally making sheryl crow happy, i'm not all that interested.

you should see my glazed face when i'm faced with american media coverage of the olympics. only so many sports :puffpiece: i can stomach before i start to lose all interest in the special occasion.
