Gonzales's Delay in securing evidence makes sense only as obstruction
Edited on Mon Jul-25-05 09:38 AM by Inland
If Gonzales really thought that waiting 12 hours was close enough, why tell Card that there was a DOJ request to secure documents right away? If he had to act right away, why not email the entire WH and/or tell Card to act right away?

Only one explanation makes sense: rather than let the WH staff be surprised a day or two days or three days latter and leaving the destruction of documents to mere chance, he is giving Card a heads-up, so that Card can get the word to the appropriate individuals to clear their desks before the clampdown comes. Telling Card is the key proof of an intent to obstruct.

It's a combination of the worst: letting the word go out without documenting who knows and without putting a no-destruct policy in place. Gonzales is a target.

1. Time magazine
compares the 12-hour gap with the infamous 18 1/2 minute gap on the Nixon tape. 'Spect it'll come back to haunt the White House.

2. That's the thing
I can't see any other explanation for the delay, and I don't know if anybody else is going to either. I mean what excuse could they come up with?

They could claim that this information, this "head start" wasn't acted on - I expect they already have - but would people believe that.

3. Gonzales testified fairly early in the game,
My guess is Fitzgerald knew then that Gonzales told Card that night about the investigation or Gonzales wouldn't have said it on national t.v. yesterday.
When Fitz found out about the heads up that Card got, I would think he immediately subpoenaed all phone records and after 8 p.m. check in/check out records from the white house.

7. Arrogance. Confidence. A History of Success.
Edited on Mon Jul-25-05 10:02 AM by higher class
Though I know the expression 'history repeats itself', I need to ask why they could be so stupid. To do it, then bungle their cover-up.

I know the answer to my question.

Arrogance - they thought they could get away with anything and they knew that they had worked hard to create an army including a propaganda machine that posed as corporate networks who could call the vote for you and local stooges who could arrange a red carpet everywhere on civic, county, state, and federal levels.

Confidence - it came to them from all their - - - -

Success(es) - if you can get away with vote theft and Supreme Court arranging a Presidency - you can get away with anything.

Or so they thought!
