ELLICOTT CITY, Md. (AP) - The mother of Supreme Court nominee John Roberts says faith was a big part of their life, although she and other family members would not say how religion might influence his court decisions.

"Yes, it is, yes," Rosemary Roberts, 76, said Thursday when asked if their Roman Catholic faith played a major role.

Family members held a news conference Thursday at Roberts' parents' home in Howard County, in a neighborhood of attached homes bordering a golf course.

"This is a very proud moment for our family," said his sister Peggy Roberts, 47. "John treasures his service to the country and we feel that the country will be well served with John on the Supreme Court."

Faith is blind acceptance of the non-existent as reality. This should not be a positive point on one's resume. It goes to the inability to think critically and analyze. Faith is most certainly not a trait that enhances anyone's intellect let alone a Supreme Court Justice.

My mom was Anglican, my dad Southern Baptist, and I went to Catholic school. By the time I was 10, I'd had enough religion for a dozen lifetimes.

14. Funny you mention that

I sent a polite but pointed e-mail to the newspaper in the town where I grew up (I have a subscription to keep up on who's died, who's married, and who's procreating) about the fact that the only articles in their "Faith Journeys" insert are about evangelical or Catholic Christianity, and that there's a whole wide world of faiths in the local area as well as syndicated columnists that could be featured. I got not so much as a "We received your letter" form e-mail.

So, on Saturday, I happen to notice this little gem in a text box. Apparently, I've just never seen it before:

What kills me is that this region is trying to bill itself as part of a "technology corridor" in an economically-dead West Virginia. There's a NASA facility there, as well as some other high-tech computer and engineering firms. But what company or scientist is going to want to relocate seeing this kind of crap in the local paper?

Frankly, I think it's the influx of those scientists and engineers, a goodly portion of whom are from India, the Philippines, Indonesia, Russia, Ireland, and other places abroad that are causing the local religious leaders to feel threatened. Their world is changing: It's not just broken down into Catholics, Baptists, Pentecostals, and Methodists, and the Presbyterians that rule them all any more. So they feel they've got to make these public showings that this area is a god-fearing christian land.

But, this sort of thing really does exemplify why there's an exodus of people with college degrees from the state.

Since we've degenerated now to showing a court nominee's wife, kids, car, house and we are now getting his mother's and sister's personal opinions, why not find out whether his dog has ever had pre-marital sex or whether his cat believes in the death penalty for small rodents.
