There is tremendous popular opposition to CAFTA in CA.
In spite of massive protests and run-ins with the police, right-wingers in CA pushed CAFTA through using every dirty trick in the book. In El Salvador, for example, the RW called for a surprise vote at 3:20 a.m.--sound familiar?
CAFTA is a lose/lose for workers in the US and CA. CAFTA is an absolute atrocity from an environmental perspective. CAFTA further consolidates corporate power and erodes transparent and accountable government. CAFTA is the next stepping stone to the FTAA--they WILL go after Chavez.
Yet, you don't seem to care much. Why?

2. I think there's a feeling |
|
of helplessness here....even if we could maintain solidarity among our Dems, the repubs would still pass it.
Sometimes it feels hopeless.
So we have to pick and choose our battles.

4. I'm curious to know why you think that no one cares. |

I've made phone calls, signed petitions, written letters and have been talking to people about it. I was very surprised to learn that my Bush** votin', repub mother is furious about CAFTA, and apparently she's been talking to people about it, too. I was also surprised to learn that she was thinking about voting for Harold Ford, Jr. in the '06 Senate race and she asked me his position on CAFTA. When I mentioned that the last thing I'd seen was that he was undecided, but leaning toward voting for it she stated, "If he votes for it, I won't even consider voting for him."

While individual DUers are trying, there doesn't appear to be a collective interest in this issue here. Threads regarding CAFTA sink like stones and while several DUers have suggested CAFTA as a worthwhile Activists Corps activity, that hasn't happened.
Edit: spelling

10. I know it's not personal - I share your frustration |

It is hard to gauge how much we're accomplishing. I really wish there would be an activist corps task about this. There are a lot of important issues but to me this is one of the most pressing right now - the vote is this week.

9. Perhaps not in the pretend world of internet |

but I can tell you I am sending info on this horrible legislation and legislator contact info to many people throughout the 14 counties under my charge.
Maybe those of us busy with this in the real world don't have a lot of time to talk about it on internet forums. Don't be so quick to ass-u-me.

12. Thanks for all you are doing on this issue. |

Obviously, there are people out there doing solid work. I guess my question was why this issue has gone nowhere on DU--it's been a real eye-opener. I've had a much needed lesson in the "pretend world of the internet".
You can call me anything you like in light of your activism. I'm not proud. :)
