Pat Robertson Counsels Youth to NOT ENLIST:
http://www.cbn.com/700club/features/BringItOn/waronterror-index.asp

I'm 17 years old, and my goal is to become a Navy SEAL. I want to protect the United States from enemies and do a job that I know I will enjoy. The problem is my parents and family hate the idea. What is the best thing for me to do in this situation?

You really need to pray about this. You are one year away from emancipation in our law, 18, and you can kind of do what you want to do, but you still need to respect the wishes of your parents. I have had some Navy SEALS working for us here. They are terrific guys, but that Navy SEAL training -- that will stretch you. It's a great achievement, though. I remember one friend who was quite wealthy was so proud of the fact that his son had made it into the SEALS, so to be a SEAL is a great achievement. It's an elite unit. But how can I tell you what to do? I think you need to work it out with your parents. In a sense, they may have more wisdom right now than you do. They may see a future ahead for you that you are cutting short. A lot of times, at 17 you lack the wisdom that your parents might have, so I think that you ought to pray together. 'I want to serve my country' is lovely, but you wait until you have to spend six or ten or twelve hours in freezing cold water in that SEAL hell week, and you will wonder if you didn't make a terrible mistake.

2. Oh wow
I'm surprised he isn't jumping on the patriotic thing to do band wagon. That's actually pretty good advice. What's that about the SEAL hell weak? My grandfather was in the navy. :)

17. Hell week
My cousin was a SEAL and explained it to the family as a week in hell that feels like it is never going to end. It is the last thing you do in SEAL training and your performance during it determines if you pass and matriculate as a SEAL or fail. All sorts of training scenarios, sleep deprivation, heat, cold, hunger, pain and your instructors watching, weighing and considering your every move.

14. Help --- Where is the logic?
Pat says true Christians support Bush who invades IRAQ, but Christians should not fight in the war.

I am a Christian who beleives Christians should not support BUSH.

18. I'm with you there...
Pat's motivations really are pretty transparent, as are most Republicans. They're all for a war that someone else's kids go off to fight for. And if not a so-called Christian's kid, so much the better.

I say so-called Christian because cheerleading for this war is about as far away from Christianity as one can get, IMHO.

5. I don't read it that way....
I think he's saying that the SEAL units is hard work and the kid might be happier and safer as a REMF.

sent the military into our schools without first getting parental permission?

8. A somewhat phoney self congratulations "I want to be a SEAL"
Like saying "I want to climb Mt Everest" or "I want to be an astronaut". Implying you are brave or strong without having to prove it. This is wannabe talk. Do it or shut up about it. I believe you have to enlist in the Navy, do a regular tour and while on active duty apply, get your Commander's endorsement, get accepted, etc so there are several steps in the process.

20. Exactly
You don't just walk into an initial enlistment for SEAL training.

What? They think the Navy will consider just anyone?

10. I'd file this under "even a broken clock is right twice a day"
Forgetting the 'praying' part of it: anyone counseling a 17 year old to take a breath and listen to his parents and family before making a life-altering decision isn't too far off the beam.

15. Wow...
He's telling the kid to chicken out before the fact. Uh, way to boost the kid's morale.

What would happen to our armed forces if every kid who wanted to join really sat down and thought about what the training entailed?

(Wait, don't answer that :-) )

Being a Navy SEAL is HARD WORK.

I have a lot respect for people who can endure that kind of training. Being able to physically and mentally condition yourself to stay alive say, in the mountains of Afghanistan or the jungles of Vietnam by eating roots and bugs and building a fire out of sticks to stay warm, has to be really about the pinnacle of human effort. Not to glorify war, but it's a form of existance that most humans in the US can't begin to aspire to.

And this chickenhawk is trying to talk the kid out of it.

Way to support the troops.

16. I think Pat's on solid ground..... remember this? (read on)
Robertson, an ardent Bush supporter, told CNN in an interview Tuesday night that he urged the president to prepare the American people for the prospect of casualties before launching the war in March 2003.

Robertson said Bush told him, " 'Oh, no, we're not going to have any casualties.' "

In his CNN interview, the religious leader described Bush on the eve of the invasion as "the most self-assured man I've ever met in my life."

"You remember Mark Twain said, 'He looks like a contented Christian with four aces.' I mean he was just sitting there like, 'I'm on top of the world,' " Robertson said on CNN's "Paula Zahn Now."

"And I warned him about this war. I had deep misgivings about this war, deep misgivings. And I was trying to say, 'Mr. President, you had better prepare the American people for casualties.' "

He said that's when the president told him he did not expect casualties from the invasion.

"I mean, the Lord told me it was going to be A, a disaster, and B, messy," Robertson said. "I warned him about casualties."

21. He had a WEALTHY friend who actually was proud to have his kid serve.
This makes me FUCKING sick. In other words, he believes only poor kids should go to war, but the fact a WEALTHY kid went and his dad was proud proves SEAL training is "special." Yes, it is special, Mr. Roberts. Anyone willing to give his, or her, life to DEFEND their country is special. Too bad we didn't need defending from Saddam Hussein and too bad you're so blind and self-centered as to assume the well-to-do need not be the ones doing the defending against real, or imagined, threats.

Go to hell, Pat Roberts.
