No Smoking While Driving
Edited on Mon Jul-25-05 02:47 PM by ls317
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) Ashtrays have been disappearing in cars like fins on Cadillacs, and so could smoking while driving in New Jersey, under a measure introduced in the Legislature.

Although the measure faces long odds, it still has smokers incensed and tearing into the idea as a Big Brother intrusion that threatens to take away one of the few places they can enjoy their habit.

10. I could care less if people smoke or where they smoke, but it's pretty
disgusting to see butts flying out the windows all the time.

For those who disagree, check the bottom of a jersey barrier the next time you are stuck in traffic and count the butts that are laying there. It's a pretty awful sight.

11. Well gee, let's use those laws we have on the books.
You know, the anti-littering laws. Gee, then they could prosecute not only those smokers who are throwing butts out the window, but those eaters and drinkers who are throwing their trash out the window also.

No need to write another law that strips personal rights away from people when you've already got a law on the books that accomplishes the desired effect, if it is enforced.

14. Shouldn't you be mad then?
About the manufacturers not including ash trays in cars, that is.
A family member of mine just bought a new car last year and she had to pay $50 dollars more to get an ash tray for the car. She doesn't like tossing butts out the window for the same reason as you, plus it can be hazardous to do so.

3. Even Non-Smokers should pay attention to this,,,,,

Eating, drinking (and I'm not talking alcohol), passengers (esp. children), & cell phones along with smoking are all driving distractions,,,,,

Are we ready to have every aspect of our lives examined by the Government(s)???

I'm not.

8. As much as I don't think smoking is a good idea

don't smoke myself, and am concerned about second-hand smoke ...

I'm not so sure that having lots of nicotine-deprived, agitated drivers on the highway is all that conducive to public safety.

13. And buckle up your dog ... it may soon be the law! (PA)
http://local.lancasteronline.com/4/15846

LANCASTER COUNTY, PA - For $12.99, you can belt Fido into the back seat. Or, for $24.99, you can supply Fifi with her own car seat. But not many pet owners do.

So the state Legislature is considering taking a bite out of the problem. If it does, expect fur to fly.

A bill introduced last month in the state House, cosponsored by 37th District Republican Tom Creighton, would mandate that pets riding in vehicles must be restrained, either in a crate or with a seat belt, or via a barrier separating the dog from the driver.

“I must have had more calls on that than I did the pay raise or intelligent design (bill),” Creighton said. ...

17. I smoke occasionally, but . . .
smoking in the car is gross. Should there be a law? Well, only if there should be a law against changing the radio while driving, or adjusting the mirror, or any of a million other things people do while driving.
