GOP Senators Ready Detainee Amendments By LIZ SIDOTI, Associated Press Writer
40 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Senate Republicans planned to push ahead with legislation regulating the treatment and interrogation of terrorism suspects in U.S. custody, despite a White House veto threat.

The Bush administration, led by Vice President Dick Cheney, is working to kill amendments that GOP Sens. John McCain of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina want to tack onto a bill setting Defense Department policy for next year.

McCain, a former prisoner of war in Vietnam, and Graham, a former military lawyer, planned to introduce their amendments this week, said Senate aides who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to let their names be used. Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman John Warner, R-Va., has been working with McCain and Graham on the legislation.

The aides said the measures have not been toned down even though White House lobbying against them intensified late last week.

2. The fact that Bush would veto a massive defense bill...
simply because it offers definitions and explanations for the treatment of detainees, speaks volumes as to how much he really "supports the troops"

3. He hasn't got the balls
It's all a big bluff, he thought McCain would back down (so did I). The Chimp is all talk. But wouldn't that be interesting if that would be his first veto!

6. If he did veto a defense spending bill based on anti-torture language,...
,...it would be one of the greatest political hammers we could ever be granted. I wonder how much punch that amendment contains: criminal penalties or what?

7. Will McCain vote against cloture?
If he does not, this is only political posturing. A cloture vote would allow to reject this amendment and others as non-germane and therefore avoid Republicans a vote on this difficult subject where Bush has already said he would veto.

10. Cheney is a thug
From your link:

...
Cheney met with the three Republican lawmakers just off the Senate floor for about 30 minutes Thursday evening. That followed an administration statement that President Bush's advisers would recommend a veto of the overall bill if amendments were added that "interfere with the protection of Americans from terrorism by diverting resources from the war to answer unnecessary or duplicative inquiry or by restricting the president's ability to conduct the war effectively."

Where have they been? Repubs had the power to make these changes l-o-n-g ago and I wonder if the offered Amendment is an effort to inoculate Repubs from a coming storm the new photos will bring.

Edited on Mon Jul-25-05 03:54 PM by faithnotgreed
only because of these impending photos
whether it brings some bit of integrity out because of how heinous all this is or because they just want a cya moment i cant say

when the wh is threatening (to veto a defense bill) because of this and these few republicans are openly fighting the wh on this amendment then they are finally displaying a shred of humanity

horrible that it comes about because of approved torture

"These prisoners...are unlawful combatants...it's indisputable the Geneva Conventions do not apply to them."

Sometimes with his, "uhnn, uhn, uhhn," his voice reminds me of Ted Turner's.

He's pretty red in the face working up his rebuttal to this common sense amendment.

These kinds of prisoners we deal with today are not prisoners of war - they are ---- ready ----- "enemy combatants".

Geneva conventions do not apply.
