I Want To Move A Shitload Of Atheists To The Same State. We Can Take Over!
Edited on Mon Jul-25-05 08:36 PM by DistressedAmerican
The Fundies have already taken South Carolina as a first round draft choice. They plan on moving there in droves as I hears it. Guess they'll be doing the reverse wagon train route from Kansas...

So, I desire to lay claim to a good non-God fearing state. Where's a simple atheist can lay down some roots without some damn fundie sneaking up and trying to pull the constitution out from under him.

In these days of strict construction, I see the wisdom of occupying one state in droves. State's Rights is all the rage. So, If we have a state of our own, we'll have rights.

Just like our founding fathers envisioned or so I hear tale.

I have always been a supporter of federal control over individual states going off and banning books and abortions and such. But, I have to move on.

I thought desegregation was good. But hey, "Feds get out" is the cry we hear in Washington these days. So, I am prepared to roll with the punches.

So this is my open call. Put in your bid to become the atheist capital of the country. If you do not live in the state you'd prefer, where would you like to be?

What state should we all move to (sorry South Carolina...)? Just as importantly, why the hell should we all go there?

I have a few favorites. All warm places with good places to party in mind.

I hereby open the floor to nominations (bangs gavel).

90. Yeah, "The Garden of Eden..."
Where you can see the rotting corpse of the founder. Yea, Kansas!

Dinsmoor had prepared for the day of his demise, building a 40-foot-high limestone mausoleum in one corner of his garden. When he died, he was embalmed and put on display. Even after 60+ years you can look through his glass-sided coffin and see the moldering creator of this heavenly splendor.

In case you ever wondered what "moldering" meant.

Remember when the election returns started coming in for the '04 election, and just after we got the results from the states on the far east coast, Oklahoma stuck out there like a big red sore thumb? 15. If you'll consider people who also FIRMLY believe in separation
of church and state:

I would like to nominate the state of TN. Before you have a fit laughing consider that there are many people here who believe in the separation of church and state. I don't like the fundies trying to force their brand of "christianity" down my throat and I know many people who are sick of it. If you were to move here in mass, perhaps the fundies would actually freak and move, and then this state could get on about the business of having serious, grown-up conversations about issues that truly matter!

Humbly submitted for your consideration.

to be sure.

I would not put it past some of our most vocal among us to call for a ban. However, you have my word that as long you you keep yourselves within modest percentages, you would have my support.

Please keep in mind that when the new constitution is finally drafted you may only count as 2/3 of a person for census purposes. I think you still get to own land though.

Of course it goes without saying that is the deal for all states.

States! We can do any old crazy shit we want!

103. Fundies starting to run rampant here, alas
repuke Lt. Gov. is on record as stating "Hawaii belongs to Jesus", which will come as news to, among others, the people who just started the first Buddhist high school in the country. Meanwhile mid-size Honolulu has, at last count, no fewer than four fundie TV stations (one sometimes has real programming, but the other three are hellfire and brimstone 24/7), and no Buddhist or other stations. Perhaps an influx would do us some good!

Cost of living is not as off the charts as it once was before the arrival of big-box stores. Real estate is pretty rough, but consider the east side of the island of Hawai'i (the "Big Island"), around Hilo. South of there in particular are miles and miles of lots that were carved up years ago as speculative developments, Florida-style, and are only now starting to really develop.

Oh, and could you bring Lance Armstrong (who is rumored to be one of you)? He could start a cycling academy out here on our miles of mountain trails.

Dronning Maud Land
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
(Redirected from Queen Maud Land)
Dronning Maud Land (or Queen Maud Land) is the part of Antarctica lying between 20°W and 45°E, with a land area of approximately 2,500,000 km², mostly covered by the Antarctic ice sheet. This territory was claimed by Norway on January 14, 1939, but this claim, like all others in the Antarctic, is not universally recognized and the area is subject to the terms of the Antarctic Treaty. The other antarctic territory claimed by Norway is Peter I Island.

Dronning Maud Land was named by Roald Amundsen in honour of Queen Maud of Norway.

There were dinosaurs on Antarctica while it was in polar position. It wasn't because reptiles had adapted to freezing cold climates, either.

a big difference in any non-jeebus people, we are all the same to them. We would need to have connections with other non-jeebus groups, strength in numbers.

I have a mix of friends of various non-jeebus believes, and there are a lot of us. We could control the country if we really wanted to. We just have to get together, which is hard for liberals because we think for ourselves.

And no more stupid religious holidays either. Everyone gets floating holidays like I get on my job. You get 10 days off a year (in addition to whatever vacation you have) to use as you see fit. Of course, they won't be called holidays anymore since that's a religious term.

What will we call our floating days off? Floating Days Off is fine for now but I'd like to see us come up with something catchier.

61. How about the United Kingdom? I'm serious.
I'm very serious. Let's take the absolute lowest estimates of the number of US Atheists and US population - 7% of 250,000,000 (both figures are probably higher).

That gives us 17,500,000 Atheists - a small country in itself.

Now, consider the UK. Population 60,000,000, with 17% Atheist - that's a further 10,200,000 atheists.

If the 17.5m US Atheists moved to to the UK, the UK would have 27,700,000 Atheists in a population of 77,500,000 - 35.7%.

Labour won the last election with 37% of the vote.

Crude sums, but an exodus to the UK would give you control not of a state but of a Nation State - nuclear arsenal, seat on the UN security council, good beer ...

California!!! Yeah!! We'd make an awesome country! And they'll be a whole lot more room down here in southern CA once all the fundies move to South Carolina.

I like to joke, but I'm dead serious. If there were a movement for California to secede, I'd be there in a minute. (As long as it's a leftie movement.)

70. Think about Iowa...
Politically, we're what I like to call a "borderline" state if we go red or blue it's always by a small margin (unfortunately we went red in the last election)-so it's pretty evenly split. We're one of those states that goes on under the radar, meaning-no one pays any attention to Iowa except during the caucuses-so it would be fairly easy to slowly gain power here.It won't last long though...unfortunately the fundies are doing this very same thing here...slowly taking over. In my area right now, within a ten mile radius we've had about 11 of these "bible fellowships" spring up. Help us please! I'm begging all the atheists and agnostics out there...consider Iowa. Remember it's home to: Grant Wood, plenty of hogs and corn, the original Maid-rite sandwich, Hawkeye football, some of the nicest people you'd ever want to meet, Missouri river on one side and the Missippi on the other- PLUS we eat more Jell-o and order more Playboy than any other state. Jell-o, Hogs, and Playboy...no wonder the fundies love it here.

74. How will you get rid of the non-Atheists in the state you pick?
Kill them? Deport them & confiscate their property?

Not all religous folk are evil. Not all Atheists are good.

What about those of us who have decent lives (& obligations) where we live now? Living in Texas has taught me not to fear the Religious Idiots. Perhaps you need to work on your courage.

77. Why, we'll treat them as well as they've treated us
They'll be barred from holding public office, prevented from testifying in court or sitting on juries, they'll be fired from their jobs if found out, they'll become a public symbol for the very worst society has to offer.

No, wait, too many of us are humanists to let that happen.

87. Subtlety? Ideological purity?
What the fuck? I mean, what the fucking fuck?

I think it's a great idea for atheists to move into one state, at least as far as ideas go. But getting all atheists to agree to anything is slightly more difficult than herding cats. It doesn't even guarantee tha the state will become more blue, since, GASP, some atheists vote Republican.

I can't imagine anything less ideologically pure than a room full of atheists. But it would be an entertaining crowd!

Have you even read these posts? Where are you seeing anything about ideological purity from me?

Have you even heard about the fundie drive on SC? Do you not get that none of us are actually going anywhere?

This is satire to point out how stupid the whole idea is.

What are you missing? Or have I hit some personal nerve you'd like to explain?

declare it an independent state, and then immediately secede from the union? we're almost there, anyway. and the weather's perfect. just let's all move to the bedrock and let the next few major quakes envelop all the parts that are built on fill, i.e., the Marina and the Financial District, both parts of the city that I wouldn't miss anyway.

105. Delaware, Wyoming, or Alaska
you want Senators! besides each is like, what... barely above 1/2 mil each? Easy pickings. i'd say Delaware, you'd be close to washington, d.c. (to lobby), close to a big metro area (aka. safety and diversity), and you can change the laws of the state to castrate evil credit card companies.

after that i'd choose either wyoming, north or south dakota, or new hampshire. but i don't like the cold, and some are just really too open for me, but then i'm not an atheist. :D i'd say new hampshire, close to big cities and another 2 senators.
