Does this country/culture make you feel safe enough to ask for help?
Do we live in a place where it's safe to ask for help when it's needed?

I'm just curious about others' perception on this question 'cause I know no one, including myself, who has felt comfortable in reaching out for support during tough times. The burden associated with asking for help in desperate times FAR FAR FAR exceeds the willingness to give to others in better times.

1. I have asked for help and gotten it.
In general, I do not like to ask for help. I never ever ever have. However, I have asked more in recent yrs as I have needed more help from trying to push myself and my resources as far as I could and having it not be enough. So yes, I have asked for help. Giving people the opportunity to help makes them feel better, and may let them ask for help when they need it also. We are all world citizens.

2. Every time I've asked I've been denied.

College loans, unemployment insurance, Consideration of unusual circumstances in legal issues. Denied, denied, denied. You'd think, as a white mail in a society that's supposedly biased in the favor of white males I would have gotten what I asked for.

Personal friend have come through. Small organizations too. But big established organizations? Nope.

3. I have a hard time asking for help under any circumstances
So it would be doubly difficult during tough economic times or in an unsympathetic culture. But I always try to help whenever I can so hopefully, though I'm not a believer in karma, that will come back to me if I need it.

4. No longer
The Repugs have drilled it into the heads of a good number of those who didn't get what they consider a "handout," that if you need help YOU fucked up and shouldn't get it. Unless, of course, you own a large corporation and then they are more than willing to bail you out.
