I'm a lifelong Progressive...have been since the 60's...still am today. How I define it hasn't changed, just the work around me and the people have. It definitely means being very compassionate and fight for the rights and benefits of all, not the privilidged.
At my advancing age, life and experience has taught me I can't fight every fight and spreading onself to thin almost always leads to troubles. Also, I've developed a healthy sense of cynicism and downright realism to always view things, especially posts on places like this, with an eye on what's the ultimate agenda here. In a majority of cases, it's things I totally agree with, or if I do have a problem, it's on the details not the basic principles.
That said, I'll say I am tired of losing elections and see next year as a very vital year for the Democratic party. Any big losses could mean a veto-proof House and/or Senate that would be our real worst nightmare. Holding ground just allows the current destruction of our country to continue. Thus the focus has to be on electing Democrats or non-Repugnicans (Bernie Sanders is one) to put the Repugnicans in the minority.
Will this mean having to accept candidates that may not be along the template you or I would prefer? Count on it. For example, I'm in a Congressional district that was just won by a Democrat after over 30 plus years of being the private domain of Phil Crane. The new representative, while deep inside a blue state, is in a realtively red area and on the radar of all the big Repugnican fundraising organizations. The bullseye has been on her head by the RNCC since the election ended, and she's voted in favor of some bills that best serve the business intersts of this district (bankruptcy - there's lot of large banks that will not hold back pumping money into a competitor's campaign) and now CAFTA (high tech jobs...this area's taken a major hit in the past few years).
Someone posted about her earlier today and what a sell out she's become. Yes, she looks that way...especially as there are others in our state delegation that are among the most liberal and progressive in the party, but Ms. Bean doesn't have that luxuary. It's hard to get that nuance across here and also difficult to square with oneself, but what's the alternative?
I sense many here don't comprehend how down the Democratic party is right now. How there needs to be a greater focus on the things that bring us together than divide us. Also to keep in mind the bigger threat to all of us that is the Repugnican party and its continued hold on the levers of power.
Honestly, I'd love the day to come when we can reward those that have been true to the principles I'll bet the two of us hold, but right now, you play with the hand your dealt, and the best poker player let the others win it for them...not the other way around.
