Updated List of Rove Witnesses and Interviewees
Edited on Wed Jul-27-05 06:38 AM by joemurphy
Here's a new update of the Rove case's witnesses and interviewees:

The update was prompted by new revelations in the Washington Post and MSNBC. The WP reports confirm that John McLaughlin, Bill Harlow, Carl W. Ford, Jr. and an unnamed friend of Wilson's have testified before the grand jury. The WP reported that George Tenet had been interviewed but it was unclear if he had actually testified before the grand jury. The MSNBC report confirms that John Bolton testified before the grand jury.

This list is something I've put together from my Googling. If anyone has any additions or corrections, let me know. I'll post the list from time to time in the future as further information comes in.

2. Any "target letters" involved? Is this public info?
A lawyer friend who deals with grand juries told me that "federal Guidelines" (rules? a set of laws?) require that before a person testifies before a GJ, they are told if they are a target of the investigation or just a witness. He also said that late in the game indictments of non-target witnesses are extremely rare (ham sandwich theory aside).

DU Lawyer comments, please.

4. Rove was reportedly told, early on in the investigation, that
he was NOT a target. Whether this is still true is conjectural.

I haven't seen any reports other than that as to who is a "target", a "subject", or a "witness" (the three categories employed by grand jury prosecutors to describe persons testifying).

Rove has reportedly testified on three (3) separate occasions before the grand jury and been interviewed by the FBI on two (2) occasions.

5. What is a "subject"?
I cannot remember if he used this word or I simply did not attach any significance to it.

My friend conjectures that the GJ is about "who authorized the trip to Niger" and the leaking of VP's name is incidental.

Thanks in advance!

6. The grand jury investigation is about who "leaked"
Edited on Wed Jul-27-05 06:51 AM by joemurphy
classified information to the press about the identity of a CIA agent, Joseph Wilson's wife.

It has been conclusively established that the CIA (and not Wilson's wife acting on her own authority - as maintained by Republican apologists) sent Wilson to Niger. The trip was authorized after inquiries were made to the CIA by Richard Cheney about rumors that Iraq was attempting to buy uranium from Niger.

A "target" is someone the prosecutor is seeking to have charged by the grand jury. A "subject" is someone whose testimony is being elicited as part of the investigation. A "subject" can become a "target" depending on what the investigation reveals. A "witness" is someone regarded as something less than a "subject" whose testimony is needed to obtain general information for investigatory purposes.

Rove's attorney, Robert Luskin, has reportedly refused to say if Rove is a "subject".

8. This DU thread about a Newsweek article was what I was
thinking about in post #4. I imagine Isikoff has a dozen fact-checkers and editors on his case these days.

9. this could mean that...
... shrub and dick(head)cheney are the targets? Since they haven't officially testified. And even if charges aren't usually brought against those who have already testified this late in the game, perhaps perjury charges are still forthcoming?

Oh we can only HOPE!

7. Joseph Wilson is in the Unconfirmed Category?
Is that right? Didn't he testify two or three times?

12. I haven't been able to find any report that Wilson testified
before the grand jury. Rove testified three times. Are you thinking of him?

If you have a report that Wilson testified, let me know and I'll amend the list.

10. Hmmmmmm, I don't like that "friend of Wilson's"...
Edited on Wed Jul-27-05 08:25 AM by Armstead
who spoke with Novak on the street.

Could that be their out? A neighbor casually and accidently mentions to Novak that Wilson's wife is CIA. Novak then does what any reporter would do, and starts sniffing around. Mentions it to Rove, who "accidently" confirms it. etc.

"An unfortunate chain of events, but no one did anything bad intentionally." Nothing to see here. Move along.

I hope that prediction is wrong. But it would be consistent with what seems to be the pattern these days.

15. No, it wasn't like that
The friend was mentioned in Wilson's book. On July 8, 2003, the friend saw Novak in the street in Washington. The friend approached him, introduced himself, and asked to chat with Novak as they walked in the same direction. The friend asked Novak about Wilson's recent article. Novak reportedly then told him that "Wilson's an asshole. His wife is with the CIA working on WMDs and she's the one that sent him to Niger."
