To all those who are cowering at home CORRIE TEN BOOM
This brave young Dutch woman didn't give up and she didn't give into the Nazis and she lived to teach us what we may need to know to survive our near future. The Nazis would have won without the thousands of people who resisted some with their lives. I was reminded of this as I was sorting my books today and came across one about the French Resistance but her story of resistance and survival under the Nazi occupation of Holland is exceptional.

1. Believe it or not
They used to teach about Corrie Ten Boom in the SOUTHERN BAPTIST church I attended as a kid. I don't remember all of the salient points, as I was pretty young, but it was in the same vein you're listing here: resistance against powerful odds, etc.

That particular church has changed a great deal these last 25 or 30 years.

the autobiography was in the library at my fundie sisters house when I was there after the birth of her third child and ended up staying a couple weeks longer because of complications. I think I read the whole bookcase but it was the only book I really liked.

She lived her faith not lip-synced it.

2. My husband's grandfather
who lived in Dokkum (Friesland), an occupied city in the north of Holland. He kept a radio when it was a death sentence to do so, befriended young German soldiers to get information on press gangs and deportations coming up and was able to warn those about to be rounded up; to get them into hiding in the fields and barns. If he had been caught in his activities, the Nazis would have killed his 6 children first, then his wife and himself. He helped protect those who were hiding Jews even though he did not shelter any himself.

He was a man who, at age 80, came to the US to visit and rode his bicycle all over the place even without knowing where he was and without speaking understandable English. (He took a course but he pronounced everything as it was spelled...in Dutch phoenetics)

J.G. deJong. He's been gone for some time now but we still miss him dearly.

6. I loved her book.
It might be a little high on the religion for some DUers, but it was really quite stunning.

10. Glad I brought it up I learned something here
(See #5 post above)

They finally talked me into "visiting" their church in Virginia and we walked into an ambush of the Senior Pastor of the Church. They demoted him and (censured?) him because his 22 year old daughter eloped with someone not from "their church". He was therefore a failed leader. They were doing if for his own good and "with love" It was a blatant power grab. I had to leave because I was going to start laughing uncontrollably. My sister and I had been discussing her choice of church gently for some time. They actually had people follow me out to make sure I was alright. I was bad I let them think I was appalled.

The good part is that they stopped asking me to go to Church with them so I don't have to keep declining )and keep from saying I would rather go into a pit of snakes, thank you very much.)
