Watching to video run, at first I was convinced he flipped the bird.

I clicked through the Leno tape, frame by frame, over the segment from when he started raising his arm/hand to when they dropped from sight. I was looking for a frame that would definitively show this was a bird, not a thumbs up.

BUT, frame by frame, I reached a different conclusion. As the gesture starts the "digit" is about where the thumb would be. As it is raised his hand rotates until the digit is in line with his forearm. Then, as it is lowered his hand rotates again to show the digit where you'd expect to see a thumb.

To see what I mean by "being in line with his forearm, do a thumbs up gesture yourself. Pick, say, your computer monitor and give it a thumbs up, as if to say "Monitor, you're ok by me." You'll see that your knuckles are on one side of the thumb, and your curled fingertips are on the other.

You'll also see that your thumb is heavier at the top, while your middle finger, if you were flipping the bird, narrows at the top. I went back and examined the video, and sure enough, that digit is fat at the top.

So, while I am willing, and perhaps inclined, the expect the worst of this guy, IMO, this was a thumbs up gesture.

him giving the camera the finger is just his one-fingered victory salute. That's what he was doing on the Leno tape - his victory salute because he knew CAFTA would pass
