Walker logs 500 miles; East Coast by next year

UNION-TRIBUNE

July 28, 2005

Steve Vaught, the 39-year-old Valley Center man who is walking across the United States to lose weight and regain his life, is somewhere between Winona and Winslow, Ariz., today. Vaught began walking in the early morning and at night to avoid desert temperatures as high as 122 degrees, although daytime temperatures have been in the 80s since he's reached higher elevations.

His progress remains slow, and he's far behind his anticipated schedule. He has put more than 500 miles behind him since leaving Oceanside on April 10 on his way to New York City, but at his current pace, he won't reach the East Coast until next year.

Vaught remains confident, however. "It's going pretty well," he said yesterday by cell phone. "The last couple days have been spent dealing with business."

The San Diego Union-Tribune began reporting details about Vaught's trek in May. Since then, his story has been told all over the country, and recently all over the world, in dozens of newspaper, radio and television reports and countless Internet links.

Yesterday, an Italian newspaper article generated hundreds of mostly supportive messages on Vaught's Web site, www.thefatmanwalking.com. Similar responses have come from China, South Africa, Australia, Peru, Uruguay, the Middle East and other places.

2. Did not go there yet but, then, the "greatness" of the Internet
where one can be as nasty as can be hiding behind the anonymity of the Internet

3. Major weight loss is common on the Appalachian Trail.
I have heard of people losing up to 100 pounds. Problem is it always comes back. No exceptions.

4. Better tell Jared from Subway
No exceptions?

I disagree. FEW exceptions sounds about right.

5. I'd be willing to bet that Jared has chefs etc. to keep him thin.
No exceptions, statistically speaking. Of course, there are always exceptions to every rule, but that's a pretty strict rule.
