I'm a feminist, but (Round II)
First I wanted to thank everyone who helped brainstorm the railroad project with me, and especially those who offered supplies or were kind enough to open up their homes (or at least the space under them) for this effort.

link for those unfamiliar with this effort:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x4216850

I am not sure if I will be able to continue with this project or not; it appears the pharmacists are a proud lot, and despite their difficult situation may at this time be unwilling to accept any offers of assistance.

My letter of outreach:

Dear Mrs. Brauer,

Thank you for taking a stand on behalf of pharmacists who refuse to dispense medicine. I wish we all respected the rights of pharmacists more. I don't think it's fair to force people to serve their country in a way that's against their morals. They should be allowed to register as Conscientious Objectors, and the Pharmacy Draft Boards should be considerate of that if their number gets called. There should be some kind of other community service the Board assigns to them if they have documented reasons why they can't perform the job.

Pharmacists who don't feel they can do the job should be allowed to quit, without retribution. It's not right to force someone into a job against their will, and then if they refuse to perform the mission, we court martial them and toss them in jail.

I am thinking of trying to start up something like an underground railroad, to help the pharmacists who oppose medicine escape to another country, or even just hide in our attics - whatever it takes to help these victims. We'd need a way they could easily identify the safe houses to flee to - maybe we could put signs in our windows, something like a railroad sign - with the two RR's, but each R could have the little x at the bottom.

I hope that someday in the near future this health care crisis will end, and we will be able to have an all volunteer force.

(first name) in Michigan

p.s. I saw your slogan, "Pharmacists for Life" and was thinking you could get a little more punch in your campaign if you went with something catchier. What do you think of something like: "Protection is for Everyone! (Unless You're a Slut)" - do you think it's too long for a bumpersticker?

The response:
Dear Miss (first name) Anonymous:

Thanks for that special and warm message, so insightful and indicative of a public school education.
Your intolerance and religious bigotry and small mindedness is duly noted.

Have a blessed day in Jesus Christ! Know we love you and pray for you. Let us know when the choo choo rolls!

Bo Kuhar, PharmD
Exec. Director

PS Only cowards fear to put their name behind words they believe in, as in your case. By you (sic) lack of verbal abilities I am sure you have no clue what Rx means, let alone the many functions a pharmacist provides daily, or the minor fact that our full name includes "International" but you probably just couldn't read the website. It's OK, Group hug!

Fortunately, most people in a community are open minded and mature enough to realize they need a local pharmacist who has good moral character and, gasp, a conscience.

PPS. This was a big job, speaking to a small minded person, so we had a man do it. Hope that's OK!

2. "By you lack of verbal abilities"
After insulting my public school education, that was classic.

3. "This was a big job, speaking to a small minded person, so we had
a man do it" Now that is priceless. Furthermore, one performs functions and provides services. and your intolerance and religous bigotry and small mindedness ARE duly noted (not is). See what you get when home schooled zealots try to be glib?? Fuck em', I'm keeping my dented cans of clam chowder!:smoke:

How does this sound?

Dear Bo,

Thanks for your kind letter. I had a good chuckle at the "public school education" jab combined with the phrase "By you (sic) lack of verbal abilities." It takes a good sense of humor to be able to joke about the quality of religious education, especially when you're coming from a presumably religious background yourself. I admire people that aren't too uptight to laugh at themselves occasionally.

You make a good point about my needing to be open minded enough to have a pharmacist with good moral character. I hadn't really considered that - and it's true. Sometimes I forget the value of having strangers act as my moral compass. When it comes to family planning in particular, I have been small minded in allowing the concerns of myself and my husband (as well as my doctor, who feels I am too old to safely have any more children) to outweigh the concerns of my pharmacist. Thanks for giving me something to ponder.

I will be sure to let you know when we have the project underway, in accordance with your request.

Peace be with you,

Audrey in Michigan

p.s. I'll have to pass on the "group hug" - I don't go in for that sort of thing.

5. You are a true humanitarian, and your patience is inspirational....
I will hold on to the clams and try to learn from your serenity in the face of idiocy. Seriously though, the response is great. It's only to bad that pointing out their hypocrisy will probably be totally lost on them:( Keep up the good fight, we are behind you 100% and awaiting your direction:):silly:

16. Here ya go, send them this, obviously pharmicists have a better
grasp of what doctors patients needs are.

Therefore they should be allowed to give their own diagnosis, a second medical opinion and choose to dispense medicine as they see fit. :sarcasm:

What does a Medical Doctor know that a Pharmicist doesn't?

18. There are times when a pharmacist knows better than a doctor
Edited on Sat Jul-30-05 10:16 AM by lwfern
For instance, when the pharmacist has graduated from the Bill Frist School of Medical Diagnosis.

20. Nice work! This reminds me a bit of the book, The Lazlo Letters...
Have you heard of it? It's not exactly the same as what you're doing but in the same spirit. It's a collection of letters by Don Novello in which he writes to companies, elected officials, etc. and it's hilarious. If you get a chance, check it out. You may find it inspiring.

Here's an Amazon link: Lazlo Letters

Let the blaming commence! :D

Oh, and by the way, I love the title of this and the other thread. I heard that phrase from other students in so many of my classes when I was in college. Excellent choice.

On edit: I'll leave the above there so you know what I'm talking about. The phrase I actually heard, now that I'm awake and remember correctly, was "I'm NOT a feminist, but..." Just *slightly* different. Oops. My call of "excellent choice" still stands. :)

10. Well, now I have a dilemma...
If I point out the sarcastic nature of the original message, it could turn out that you too are just being sarcastic and really read the post and got the joke...I'm just going to assume that's the case because the other option (that you just had a knee jerk reaction to seeing "I'm a feminist, but") makes me sad:(

Do they?
I have never given a damn about my local pharmacist, and that's the truth! :D

17. Well, the insurance companies are busy convincing
the communities that local pharmacies and pharmacists are nothing but rip-offs and over-paid pill counters. They want you to use mail order to keep insurance premiums from being raised. The insurance companies are looking after YOU.

It's not only blue collar jobs that the Conservatives are trying to outsource to save some $$$$$.

I have recently begun to wonder if this whole "moral issue" is another Conservative wedge to divide patients and pharmacists, drive everyone to mail order where one pharmacist can do the job of a dozen or more, so that insurance companies can save money and the execs can boost their pay.

Would like to know the "seed" money for this movement.
