Moore Says Doc Already Has HMOs Spooked
Michael Mooresays his next documentary already has HMOs quaking in their boots. Moore has not yet begun shooting the film, "Sicko," but his planned critique of the nation's health care system, he says, is making "freaked-out" HMOs warn employees what to do if approached by the filmmaker.

"At this point we haven't shot anything yet and they're totally discombobulated," Moore said at the inaugural Traverse City Film Festival. Moore, who lives near Traverse City, founded the film festival with local movie buffs to showcase excellent films. Moore described good movies as a bridge across the political divide for people "tired of the hate, tired of the yelling, tired of ... the screamfests, the talk radio."

Though the festival is showing films like "Casablanca" and the upcoming
Bill Murraymovie "Broken Flowers," Moore's involvement sparked a conservative Texas group to sponsor a rival festival showing Hollywood classics and conservative-themed movies. That festival was to begin Saturday.

While Moore's Traverse City Film Festival puts politics on the back-burner for a weekend, he makes no apology for making politically themed films.
"When in this great democracy did 'political' become a dirty word?"

1. Interesting
Personally, I believe in wellness and have the good luck of having an MD who does, too. She uses any and all methods to help you maintain your health and to get you well if you are sick. Needless to say, her all encompassing approach to healthcare doesn't get her on the HMO's lists.

2. I wonder what a list of "conservative themed" movies looks like
Triumph Of The Will? Reefer Madness? Birth Of A Nation?

Seriously though, I wonder what that rival conservative film festival would show.

The "Traverse Bay Freedom Film Festival" will screen "Michael Moore Hates America," "Confronting Iraq," "Echoes of Innocence," and classic favorites such as "Top Gun," "Airplane!," "On the Waterfront" and "Charlotte's Web."

Also featured will be the Disney documentary "America's Heart and Soul."

6. How is "Airplane!" a conservative movie?
esp w/ all the drug and sex references? Besides, its a very funny movie, and conservatives lack the necessary sense of humor to enjoy it.

8. I guess they see "On The Waterfront" as an anti-union film
Funny that they don't see the same type of corruption, strong-arm tactics, and racketeering that permeates the Republican Party the way it did the longshoreman's union back in the days when it was controlled by the mafia.

17. Here's the scoop on the festivals
Here in Traverse City, it's true, we are just wrapping up the first annual film festival that Michael Moore initiated. It's been a rousing success! Of course the neo-cons hate it, especially Genie Aldrich (a.k.a. "Mean Barbie"). Her counter-festival has been a bomb. Here's a link to today's local paper story on it:

http://record-eagle.com/2005/jul/30freef.htm

What they don't report is this:

Tonight I decided to check out MM Hates America at Park Place. I'm lousy at counting crowds, but there were a lot of empty seats. Maybe 125 in attendance. I'm a frumpy, gray-haired, 57-year old and the only person in the room wearing denim. I will say those Freedom babes dress to kill. Anyway, Mean Barbie wandered by and made it a point to welcome me to the movie, offer me food, etc. etc. (undoubtedly trying to figure out why I was there, since I didn't visually fit in!) She told me she hoped I'd come back again "next year." Right. Anyway, the vet from Iraq gave his opening presentation for about 10 minutes, and the film began. At exactly 8:50, just as Michael was shown getting his free gun at the TC bank (Bowling), the lights came on, and the film paused. Mean Barb! ie and her Hollywood bimbo cohort rushed to the front and began falling all over themselves apologizing for the X-Rated LANGUAGE that had been used by Penn Gillette, and I think even the director. She was "profoundly embarrassed, mortified", etc. at the terrible words (MF, Asshole, Fucking this and that) and declared the film was coming to an abrupt stop. Apparently the provider of the film was to have sent the "family-friendly" version (did you know there were two varieties?) and someone screwed up. But not to fear, they'd start the Ronald Reagan piece earlier and they hoped for our forgiveness. Gee, I only wanted to see MMHA, so I left. So did a few others, including the 4 girls in prom dresses. Thought you'd enjoy knowing what happened.

Got this last report via e-mail, as you can see, from a first-hand source. I think it's hilarious.

Here's the link to today's story on the real film festival:

http://record-eagle.com/2005/jul/30volun.htm

Other local stories on the film festival from throughout the week:

http://record-eagle.com/2005/jul/29filmfest.htm

Page with more local coverage links:

It's been a wonderful thing for the area and Mean Barbie looks really bad in all of this. Some of the wealthiest Rethugs in town have contributed to Moore's effort. We don't know who's sponsored the counter-festival films, they wish to remain anonymous. heh
