using the Bible against the religious wrong
there are many passages that show that Christian Coalition, et al, are heretics

(found this in a forum at the Christian Alliance)

Proverbs 6 NIV (New International Version)

16 There are six things the LORD hates,
seven that are detestable to him:
17 haughty eyes,
a lying tongue,
hands that shed innocent blood,
18 a heart that devises wicked schemes,
feet that are quick to rush into evil,
19 a false witness who pours out lies
and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers.

add some more

4. I'm not a Bible person
But as a youngster in Catholic school we were taught that the only time Jesus became violently angry was when he saw the money changers in front of the Temple. He threw over their tables and drove them away. Why? Not because they were money changers, but because they set themselves up in the auspices of the Temple of God and in doing so implied that they had the approval of God to do what they did.

Sound Familiar?

Kind of like running a candidate as "God's" choice for president...

5. yep it is time to use the Bible as a tool
Edited on Sun Jul-31-05 09:01 PM by nadinbrzezinski
heck I think I will get myself a copy of the King James tomorrow at the Price Club, it not tonight... and just reread it

I have found that quoting scripture usually shocks them, especially when you are right ... and if new Testament, if you are Jewish

Was fun recently i was told by a preacher type, you are gonna go to Hell

I smiled,

You think its funny?

Ayep, in my principles of faith there is no hell... so yes it is very funny, on the other hand, Revelations talks of a false church that shall rise at the end of days.

His face went ashen.... "you will burn!"

And in there it also says that others will be called at the end of days to do his work...

He was completely white getting the full implications..

He looked me in the eye and says, you don't know what you speak off

Oh yes I do, and when Moses left for the mountain the People of Israel demanded the golden calf from Aaron and in the end Aaron had no choice.... this new self improvement through Christ and Me and I through Chest is the new Golden Calf... oh my he is a preacher and he was getting really angry with me... I admit did not help that one of his disciples started asking more questions

And he said onto the people to love thy neighbor as you would yourself, to clothe the naked, to feed the hungry and to heal the sick... it is in there, I think Mathew, you should also read, independently from your preacher the Sermon of the Mount....

And I truly thank my seminary students for those conversations at oh dark hundred... these days I find this invaluable at times.

12. Get New International Version of Bible
Edited on Sun Jul-31-05 09:06 PM by GoreDean2008
Don't get King James or New King James. New International Verision is easier to read. If you want to study the Bible it's better to have a easy-to-read version. You will find that Jesus is on our side. The conservatives just hijacked Jesus.

I recently quit my church and became a non-church Christian because the more I go to the church the more I find that I am getting forced to follow the pastor's political ambition or economic greed than persuaded to follow the real Gospel of Jesus Christ. I was very dissatisfied with my pastor's sermon that I read the Bible myself and was stunned to find that these "corporate Christian" pastors rarely teach anything that Jesus taught in the Bible. Jesus is liberal. Go to http://www.jesusisaliberal.org/index.html.

Hebrew and Aramaic, as to the King James I have no problem with the language... and I actually like it... now the better of them actually in my view is the Jerusalem Bible, this is a translation done with experts from all three major faiths, and it is easy to read to boot

6. Read the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John
Jesus totally hates the ancient-day John Ashcrofts, Jerry Falwells, Pat Robertsons, and Franklin Grahams. Jesus does not even teach His disciples to forgive these nasty hypocrites while He teachs us to forgive all other kinds of sinners. And Jesus's teaching is liberal in all aspects. The only conservative stance Jesus preaches is sexual morality, but then He teaches us to forgive sexual sinners. But no forgiveness to hypocrite pharisees.

The Gospel of Jesus is the liberals' best weapon against Christian conservatives because there are only three moral codes of GOP:

1. Oppose abortion
2. Hate homosexuals
3. Praise Jesus while rejecting His all other teachings.

Other than these three moral codes, most GOPers do not follow virtually any of Jesus's teachings.

7. the fundies have their share of passages, too
It's not surprising that in a collection of writings spanning a thousand years, as long as it is, there are going to be passages to justify and condemn all sorts of behavior. Maybe there are universal standards of right and wrong that people can agree on without resorting to ancient "holy" books.

Enron and illegal invasions are wrong no matter what religious beliefs you have or don't have.

I'll add one of my favorite Bartlet rants, concerning the Religious Right's attitude towards homosexuality:

Josiah 'Jed' Bartlet: I like how you call homosexuality an abomination.

Jenna Jacobs: I don't say homosexuality is an abomination, Mr. President, the Bible does.

Josiah 'Jed' Bartlet: Yes, it does. Leviticus.

Jenna Jacobs: 18:22.

Josiah 'Jed' Bartlet: Chapter and verse. I wanted to ask you a couple of questions while I have you here. I'm interested in selling my youngest daughter into slavery as sanctioned in Exodus 21: 7. She's a Georgetown sophomore, speaks fluent Italian, always cleared the table when it was her turn. What would a good price for her be? While thinking about that, can I ask another? My Chief of Staff Leo McGarry insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35: 2 clearly says he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself or is it OK to call the police? Here's one that's really important because we've got a lot of sports fans in this town: touching the skin of a dead pig makes one unclean. Leviticus 11: 7. If they promise to wear gloves, can the Washington Redskins still play football? Can Notre Dame? Can West Point? Does the whole town really have to be together to stone my brother John for planting different crops side by side? Can I burn my mother in a small family gathering for wearing garments made from two different threads? Think about those questions, would you?

but somewhere in the NT i believe there is a verse about the earth and everything on it being a gift from God and that it was our job to take care of it.

A long time ago, I had that verse written down and had it tacked up in my work area, I will see if I can track it down.

22. I like this passage from Galatians...
Chapter 3, Verse 23 "But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterward be revealed.
24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. 26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
:-)
28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
:-)
29 And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

26. One of my favorite passages in the Bible
is the one, and I do believe these are the words of Jesus, which admonishes those who worship publically. He calls them hypocrites. They make a point to show how much "alms" they give and wail and flog themselves in front of on-lookers. Doesn't it sound like televangelizing? For that matter most Christian defy the teachings of Christ by going to special buildings built to show off how much will spend on a place to pray. Jesus said to go to your room behind a closed door and converse with God in your own way. It's one of the reason I quit the Catholic Church - too ostentatious.

29. A few passages from the Bible are also helpful:
* Ephesians 2:8-9
* James 2:14-17
* James 5:1-6 (paralleling today's economy)
* 1 Timothy 6:10
* Proverbs 22:16
* Deuteronomy 24:5
* Mark 12:38-44
* Matthew 5:44
* Matthew 7:1
* Matthew 25: 31-46
* Luke 6:31
* Luke 14:12-14
* Luke 17:21
* Revelation 3:17
* Revelation 22:12

It's a stock list, but the vast majority of them pertain to what TRUE Christians stand for. Helping the less fortunate, et al.

Sodom and Gommorah were also destroyed not because of the myth of homosexuality but the reality of greed and selfishness. And America is starting to look like the new S&G. :-(

30. A few excerpts from Isaiah...
Chapter 1
10 Hear the word of the LORD, ye rulers of Sodom; give ear unto the law of our God, ye people of Gomorrah.
11 To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto Me? saith the LORD; I am full of the burnt-offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he-goats.
12 When ye come to appear before Me, who hath required this at your hand, to trample My courts?
13 Bring no more vain oblations; it is an offering of abomination unto Me; new moon and sabbath, the holding of convocations--I cannot endure iniquity along with the solemn assembly.
14 Your new moons and your appointed seasons My soul hateth; they are a burden unto Me; I am weary to bear them.
15 And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide Mine eyes from you; yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear; your hands are full of blood.
16 Wash you, make you clean, put away the evil of your doings from before Mine eyes, cease to do evil;
17 Learn to do well; seek justice, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.

Chapter 58
2 Yet they seek Me daily, and delight to know My ways; as a nation that did righteousness, and forsook not the ordinance of their God, they ask of Me righteous ordinances, they delight to draw near unto God.
3 'Wherefore have we fasted, and Thou seest not? Wherefore have we afflicted our soul, and Thou takest no knowledge?'--Behold, in the day of your fast ye pursue your business, and exact all your labours.
4 Behold, ye fast for strife and contention, and to smite with the fist of wickedness; ye fast not this day so as to make your voice to be heard on high.
5 Is such the fast that I have chosen? the day for a man to afflict his soul? Is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? Wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD?
6 Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the fetters of wickedness, to undo the bands of the yoke, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?
7 Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him, and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?
8 Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thy healing shall spring forth speedily; and thy righteousness shall go before thee, the glory of the LORD shall be thy rearward.

31. Read the Sermon on the Mount
As Kurt Vonnegut observed, you'd think real Christians would advocate posting the Sermon on the Mount, rather than the Ten Commandments.

Also, I always think of the Religious Right when I read this passage from Matthew:

Matthew 25:43-46 - I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

35. It is imperative we "take Jesus back"
at every turn. I left the church years ago due to the sexual abuse and the refusal of parishioners to admit their minister was an abuser. However, I am confident that I know more than 90% of members about the Bible as well as other sacred writing. We must use it!
Has anyone ever looked at the Jefferson Bible? Thomas Jefferson went through the Bible and cut out Jesus' words, pasted it all together and used it for a true guide to Christian behavior-- a great start.
