Palmeiro suspended for steriods, can he be charged with perjury?
Palmeiro suspended for drug policy violation
By Hal Bodley, USA TODAY
Baltimore Orioles first baseman Rafael Palmeiro, who testified before Congress on March 17 that he'd never used steroids, was suspended by Commissioner Bud Selig on Monday for 10 games for violating baseball's drug policy.

The announcement was made prior to the Orioles 12:35 p.m. ET game at Camden Yards against the Chicago White Sox.

Palmeiro, whose 567 career home runs and 3,018 hits make him a leading candidate for the Hall of Fame five years after he retires, immediately appealed the disciplinary action.

Palmeiro, who passed 3,000 hits this season, is the seventh major leaguer suspended under baseball's new drug program that became effective in March. He by far has the highest profile of any of the previous players disciplined.

Palmeiro during the highly publicized March 17 hearing on steroids conducted by the House of Representatives Government Reform Committee said, under oath, he'd never used steroids even though former Texas Rangers teammate Jose Canseco said otherwise in his book, Juiced.

8. Most definitely.
I still remember them standing up to give the oath and towering over everyone who was nearby.

I wonder if his invitation to the White House is still good. His buddy George is probably none too pleased.

5. And now our next event, the sports commentator backflip
When Canseco's book came out, there was practically a parade of "knowledgeable" sports commentators given "We Are the World"-style cameos to denounce Canseco and claim that he was only writing all this stuff to make a buck. Then they'd pick up their guest commentator paycheck from ESPN and head back to Utica, Wichita or wherever in hell they came from.

When Palmeiro recently joined the very exclusive club of major leaguers who had 3,000 hits and 500 home runs, the encomiums cascaded down from the press box. Palmeiro was practically annointed as the "greatest ballplayer never to have won the World Series" (Ted Williams? Who he?) and other such bullshit.

I predict that in the next 48 hours, all the commentators will now make their latest deathless pronouncement that Palmeiro is damaged goods, shouldn't be in the Hall of Fame, and hey, didja see the Yankees are above .500? No further mention of Canseco's curiously prescient pronouncements, Palmeiro's congressional testimony, or anything that would reflect badly on the cadre of sports "journalists" who have been so consistently wrong. Oh, and let's not forget the inevitable revival of Palmeiro Viagra jokes.

9. Do We Know It's Steroids?
I'm watching the Orioles-White Sox Game (Sox 1 O's 0) and the Sox announcers said they didn't know what the "drug" in "drug abuse" was. There was no mention of steriods in the release they had...which I'll assume is the one used in the story.

Interesting nonetheless.

Wasn't it Bob Costa who refered to Palmiero last week on TDS by saying this guy gets "wood on everything".
