I was on a train when a group of middle-aged folks headed off on a hiking trip boarded. One guy was the class clown. I had my nose in a Harry Potter book in Englisch, it was ASSUMED I was oblivious. I stopped reading and simply watched and listened. Mr. Clown finally made an "off-colour" joke that I found SO FUNNY I burst out laughing till the tears rolled.

His wife was ABSOLUTELY FREAKED and screamed at him "THIS WOMAN UNDERSTOOD EVERY WORD YOU SAID!" She only calmed down after I told her that I ALSO understood he was an overgrown adolescent and was not at all offended by his antics. He gave me a big hug COMPLETELY AWARE that I'd rescued him from the tiger's jaws... Mensch!

My siblings and I are all half-American Indian and half-white. We have all been mistaken for foreigners at some point in our lives.

Every September my brothers come to Lawrence for the Haskell Indian Art Show. They've had a booth for years and they always stay at my place. Afterward the show is over they visit our brothers in KC and then we have a family reunion/marathon (playing basketball, watching videos and playing games) and they leave. In 2001 they had planned to leave on Tuesday 9/11 and drive back home. They changed their minds because both of them had been stopped and questioned after the OKC bombing. As one of them said, you see two dark skinned guys of indeterminate origin driving a late model mostly unmarked van (they had purchased from Ryder Trucking & spray painted over the logo) driving into OKC after a bombing on a federal building and you see two guys wanting to get picked up/stopped by the cops. They stayed for almost a week extra because of profiling worries. They got the van repainted when they got home and got tribal tags for it. That way, if the cops stop them they know its because they're DWI (driving while Indian) and not because they're suspected terrorists.

But thankfully, I'm female, so the cops don't bother me. However, my son has been profiled because of how he looks. I'm 1/2 Israeli, 3/8 dark German, and 1/8 black Irish. My son has half of mine, and half of his father's ethnicities, which are equal parts English, Irish, Scottish, and Welsh.

We both have olive complexions. My hair is dark and straight while his is a lighter brown (it was blondish when he was younger) and curly. My eyes are dark brown while his are hazel.

to have your nephews face the type of shit that so many people fought so hard to put an end to. I've mentioned having one of my brown-skinned nephews, in his mid-twenties, stopped with a friend less than two blocks from their apartment. They were going to go another 1/2 block, and pick up a pizza they had ordered. But, no. They were held three hours while the police did a "background check."

Or another nephew and his father went to town to get "take out" food. While they waited, they walked to the lot nextdoor, to look at cars. It was early evening, and the car dealership was closed. Within five minutes, a few police cars drove up. The police know my brother-in-law and nephew, and laughed about the "suspicious persons" call they were responding to. They probably don't get as many about white people looking at cars.

Then there was the night three nephews and a friend were pulled over six times, all by the same two police officers. Gotta keep a close eye on "them," ya know.

I will say that people of color in this area generally find white folks to be decent, friendly, and fairly open-minded. But it is hard for those who do not experience this type of thing to understand what it is like.

Reminds me of a documentary done in Ireland in the 1970's - two little kids, one Protestant, one Catholic, who were friends, were asked to describe a person who was of the opposite faith. The little Proddy said that a Catholic would look mean, have pointed teeth and slanting eyes, the little Catholic said a Protestant would be scary looking with mean red eyes and pointed fangs - pretty much the same answer. They both said that you could tell a Catholic or Protestant just by looking at him, because he would have these fangs and slanted eyes.

Then each boy was informed that his friend was just such a terrifying person that you could tell just by looking at him. They were stunned. Both protested, "but he's not a Catholic/Protestant - he's just my best mate!"

Sad.

While in America with my Australian born, Irish/Gypsy/British heritage husband, who looks superficially "Middle Eastern" (dark hair, dark eyes, moustache and beard but very light skin), every trip through an airport was hell. Once his passport was taken away for so long that we missed our flight. He was searched, wanded, singled out in every single security point. He was questioned. He was even singled out when we were just changing planes and didn't have to go through security points! It made a three week trip where we took twelve planes into an absolute nightmare. No-one else in the security lines or at our departure gates received this kind of attention, with one exception - a Sikh gentleman who was also wanded, patted down and had his passport taken away.

We're not going back to America until things change - if things ever change.

because many of them are Muslim, but there are many non-Muslim Arabs and many, many non-Arab Muslims. If we want to catch potential Muslim extremists (which is the point of profiling Arabs), profiling will never work because Muslims look like you and me (regardless of what we look like).

You do know Muslims come in all different physical types and nationalities, right? So how can you possibly profile such a diverse mixture?

And I wholeheartedly agree that there is no Arab race - but then it's not me doing the "profiling" of Arabs - it's government...it IS nonetheless "racial" profiling ..though it should be called racist profiling, since that would be the most honest description of it...but it is racial profiling for people to target other people simply because of how they look (based on the stereotypes and racists assumptions of skin hue, hair texture and eye color)

And I don't have to believe in there being different races to be affected by those with racists attitudes...it's not what I believe that causes the problems.
