What questions should I ask Senator Durbin today? I may see him.
Edited on Tue Aug-02-05 11:12 AM by in_cog_ni_to
Senator Durbin is going to be in a nearby town today to talk about a new high school that's going to be constructed and I am going to TRY to go. I'm having a hard time finding the streets posted in the paper, but if I go to the town, I SHOULD be able to get directions. IF I find him, what questions should I ask him, if I get a chance?

I was thinking of asking him if the Senate will filibuster Roberts if they don't get the requested papers from the WH?

Does he know anything about Roberts' involvement in the Iran/Contra scandal? If not, perhaps the Senate should investigate it?

Any questions about Bolton you can think of? I don't think the Senate can do anything at this point? Any thoughts?

Any other questions you'd like to throw out there?

I have to run right now, but post some questions if you can think of any. :hi:

1. Why hasn't the Dowing Street Memo been
brought to the Senate floor recently?

8. GOOD question. I'll ask him!
I'm hoping I can get close enough to him...this is a very SMALL town. I don't expect many people to be there so my chances should be good. :hi:

2. Ask him if he is gunshy....
Since the Repubs stuck it to him with his "apology" and does he regret it?

6. Manteno. It's only 10 minutes from me.
:) He's suppose to be there at 4:30 this afternoon. I will tell him we FULLY support his statement about GITMO.

10. Where In Manteno?
Is this a public event?

Definitely give my favorite Senator the thumbs up for all he's done. Please, thank him for speaking out as he did about Gitmo and let him know there are many here in Illinois who not only support his statement, but were appauled at how his statement was distorted by the Repugnicans and Corporate Media.

Also, if you can, ask him about how he'll handle the church/state questioning of Roberts...and how we can draw out this man's past history.

Have a great time...Durbin's a great guy and a great Senator.

14. The newspaper says Manteno Lake Road and Maple Street.
I cannot find Manteno Lake Road on Mapquest or Maps on us and Maple street is all over the place. I think it's a small enough town that SOMEONE can tell me how to get there. I'm going to take a practice drive over there at around 1:00 to find it. He's suppose to be in Manteno at 4:30 this afternoon.

I'll definitely give him a hug on the GITMO issue and I will be sure to ask him about Roberts and the Church/state issue. I'm going to print this thread and take it with me. :)

I LOVE the guy and am so looking forward to meeting him! :bounce:

18. Looks Like It's At The High School
About the only thing I could find. Manteno Lake Rd. is also Division Street. I dunno, I'm on the other side of the world from there. LOL.

I've met the Senator various times...going back to his State Rep. days and he's just a fun and good person to chat with...he always is genuinely concerned and listening.

Enjoy!

19. Ah ha!
I DO know where the High School is, but didn't know that's where I was going. :) Thanks! :hi:

If you're in Chicago, you ARE on the other side of the world from Manteno. It's about as small as a town can get, but growing like wildfire because of the proposed Peotone Airport......Which I oppose. :( I'm NOT looking forward to low flying planes flying over my house. :( Gonna have to move if I'm still living by the time it's built. It's been proposed FOREVER.

Thanks for the info! :hi:

20. I'm At The Other Airport...LOL
I'm near O'Hare...and I favored expanding O'Hare and Gary (of course that's not Illinois/Chicago dollars) rather than the Peotone landgrab.

Looks like that's pretty much DOA...I haven't even heard when they're supposed to start expanding O'Hare. Gotta be some pretty pissed speculators with lots of farm field and no airport.

4. Please tell him this Mississippi Liberal Veteran
would like for him to tell trent lott to go fuck himself. Senator Durbin does not owe Mississippi an apology because this state sends firearms to Illinois which end up being used in crimes. Let's see, how can we put that in a question?

"Senator Durbin, would you please tell trent lott to go fuck himself?" Warmest regards from a Mississippi Veteran.

22. Yes, lott did
Durbin very recently stated that most of the guns used in crimes in Illinois could be traced to Mississippi. lott whined and said Durbin owed the state of Mississippi an apology. I live in Mississippi, lott is an embarrassment and whether Durbin asks him or not, trent can go fuck himself at the request of this veteran.

5. Ask him what we can do to help and support
the Democrats to get us back in charge of the country. See what he says. Then ask him about an amendment stating that an individual has a right to privacy in making their own healthcare decisions.

He's my Senator, too, and I really like him. Have fun! Hope you find the street!

11. I'll ask him.
I'm thinking of asking him about evoting machines too. I don't know if I'll even get to talk to him, but I'm sure as hell going to TRY! Thanks for the questions. This town is very SMALL. I think asking anyone that lives there where the street is, I should be able to find him. :hi:

Edited on Tue Aug-02-05 11:27 AM by flordehinojos
when are the democrats, any democrat, going to stop making excuses for bush, rubbing stamping every fearmongering threat that he puts out there to get his way. when is anyone going to stand up to the bush boy and say, 'you need a spanking--and the spanking you're getting from us, is a flat, NO. WE WON'T TAKE YOUR LIKES, your lies, NOR YOUR BULLYING ANYMORE!'

that would be a question i would like answered by any democrat.

15. Two questions on the issues.
Edited on Tue Aug-02-05 11:34 AM by CBHagman
First, I am under the impression that the administration is not taking measures to prevent another terrorist attack, particularly of the sort focused on mass transit, chemical or nuclear plants, and railway cars (specifically chemical tankers). Senator Biden's op-ed piece in The Washington Post today covers this fairly thoroughly.

I am horrified that the Bush administration is spending literally hundreds of billions of dollars on a war in Iraq that has made NO ONE safer -- certainly not the average Iraqi, not the Europeans, not the Americans. Ask him about the incompetence and short-sightedness of the administration and what the Senate should be demanding of it.

Secondly, tax policy. I haven't heard of the Democrats getting united behind a rejection of the repeal of the estate tax. Why is that? They do have Republican allies (specifically, McCain) on standing against a repeal. However, the GOP and their pollsters and allies have managed to frame the debate by referring to the "death tax," rather than an estate tax that will affect only the wealthiest estates. Why is the GOP getting away with policies that screw over the little guy and heap even more financial rewards on the top 1 percent of earners/heirs?

On edit: And if you get close enough to shake his hand, look right into his eyes and tell him that there are many of us out here pulling for him, that we know what he stands for, that we don't accept the smearing that was done of him recently. Urge him to fight on.

I will try my best to ask as many of these questions as I can. I will most definitely give him our support on the GITMO speech. I'm still pissed off at what the repukes did to him. Bastards! :grr: I just LOVE Dick Durbin! :loveya:

21. Ask him why he backed down and apologized....We had his back, he was right
..but he caved....

Tell him that the one thing, the ONE thing we need more than anything else from our elected Democratic officials is a collective spine.

I suppported him in the last election, and I will support him again in this election, but he had bloody well better learn that backing down in the face of the baying attack dogs on the right is a quick way to becoming known as the Former Senator from Illinois...
