A conservative friend said the backlash against Current is why Libs loose
He wrote:

"I read one thread on DU where a few liberals were whining that "Gore killed NWI"

Of course Gore did not kill NWI he just bought it after it was up for sale because of low ratings. It would have gone off air anyway except that it might have ended up in the hands of just another boring media conglomerate.

But this is what irritates me in liberals. They were whining all day and all night long that the media is controlled by big corporations and they, average people, cannot have a say in what is covered and shown on TV. Now there is a network where they could have a say and they are still whining.

If FOX News annonced a competition for VC content its right-wing viewers would rush to make pods about confederate rallies and abortion clinics and corrupt Dem politicians. But liberals are just angry that a network that almost nobody watched in the US is gone.

2. GOP keeps its people up on pedestals which keeps them viable while
some Dems think they need to display how cutesy nasty they can be in tearing down their own.

Dole gets called upon still today as a learned, experienced spokesperson while Gore gets hammered as a nutcase, because not enough left-oriented media or pundits treated him respectfully to begin with.

Gore's intellect and prescience TOWERS over Dole's partisan hackiness, yet who gets shown the most respect?

6. The thing that always stands out in my mind is that Dan Quayle ran in 2000
I never heard or saw any GOPer treat him as damaged goods, even though he was a national joke during the Bush I Admin, and never brought any real electoral power to the ticket (like the GOP was ever going to lose Indiana). But still he was treated with respect and was considered a credible candidate. I haven't heard any rumors that he'll run again, but if he does, nobody on their side will dump him because he isn't "a fresh face": instead, they will brag that he was VP, and pump up every comma on his resume.

17. If they go too far one direction, we have to go too far in the other?
Although there is one Gore/Nixon comparison I wouldn't mind... ;)

3. I like Current - but it needs a real news pod - say by the CBC- every hour
If radio can do a 3 minute sumary with a one minute financial update and 1 minute sports update every 10 to 15 minutes, Current should be able to fit such into once an hour.

4. Gore wasn't a particularly good politician...
... and I don't expect him to be a particularly good television producer... but, CurrentTV's got little to do with liberals, or politics, or anything else.

As for NWI, it was losing money hand over fist--that's why its owners sold to Gore's consortium. It's that simple.

As for conservatives rushing to provide content for conservative outlets, give me a break. No conservative can do shit without marching orders from either Rove or Limbaugh. Followers don't lead, by definition.

11. Conservatives would certainly create their own pods
If you spend some time around the right side of the 'Net, you'll see that they have just as many blogs and comedy sites as we do. They're just better organized than we are - - if every single liberal group worked in unison with the Dem party, we would look like we march in lockstep too. Instead, we work with whatever groups appeal to us and ignore the DNC, DCCC and DSCC calls to action for the most part.

13. And, your point is?
Apart from what's already been said?

The point is that CurrentTV isn't overtly political, and likely never will be.

CurrentTV really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things--nor does any effort on the part of the right to make "content."

Myth-making abounds these days.

If you believe this is in any way political, the minotaur awaits you.

Cheers.

16. Yes, myth-making does abound these days
Myths such as politicians who manage to get elected to the Congress four times, the Senate twice, the Vice Presidency twice, and go from a 20 point deficit to (just looking at the official vote total) winning the popular vote for the Presidency are not very good politicians by definition.

Or myths like conservatives could not make video pods or any other grass roots politicking because they lack the qualities that make us human, like having an imagination and the ability to think for themselves.

And myths like allowing ordinary people to have a say in TV programming has no possible political ramifications.

My point, I think, is pretty self-evident from my first post. If you can't see the political possibilities in allowing ordinary people to make documentaries and other ordinary people to vote on which documentaries make it onto TV, too bad. Just remember this thread when, two or three or even ten years down the road, when VC is as omnipresent as the Internet is now...

18. I don't wish Gore harm...
... but I've been around a long time, and this is neither political nor likely it is ultimately profitable.

I give it two years and bust. And there's no political gain to be made from it by progressives or demos.

But, that wasn't my point. I don't believe this channel was instituted for political purposes, and for that reason, it won't accomplish any political purposes. It was about making some money. That's all. It's okay to make money. But, there's no point in ascribing any greater purposes to it when there are none apparent.

Cheers.

5. I think there is a fundamental difference in the two groups, but it's not
just that liberals like to whine.

I think many people are liberals because they don't trust authority- or they even resent it. While I think that's a healthy position, it makes a person more likely to tear down "authority figures" or influential people even when they're pushing the same cause.

Conservatives usually don't have this character trait. They line up and march very easily.

10. News World International - - news created by the CBC (Canada)
CBC sold it in 2000 to Vivendi, because it lost money hand over fist. It was up for sale almost constantly for 4 years, always sold by its owner for quick cash. It was going to be replaced at some point, probably when it's last contracts with DirectTV ran out.

It was either the only or one of the only channels for sale, and Gore's group ended up outbidding GE, NBC and Universal for the channel.

Commenting on the view of a few of the people who love to pre-judge something in it's infancy. This is all entirely silly and premature ejaculation.
