A Sound of Distant Thunder (regarding the September DC protest)
Edited on Tue Aug-02-05 02:50 PM by WilliamPitt
“I love the man that can smile in trouble, that can gather strength from distress, and grow brave by reflection. 'Tis the business of little minds to shrink, but he whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves his conduct, will pursue his principles unto death.”

--Thomas Paine

It seems a million years hence that I stood upon the steps of the Capitol Building in May of 2001 with thousands of other activists to protest the illegitimate delivery of the presidency to George W. Bush. This was the first significant demonstration against the Bush administration to take place in Washington DC, but it was not the last. I remember listening to the words of Ronnie Dugger, founder of the Alliance for Democracy, as he raged into the microphone. “We will label these four years of Bush illegitimacy as the Lawless Years,” declared Dugger, “the tyranny in American history, the Tyrannical Interlude.”

It is difficult to quantify, now that more than 1,500 days of lawlessness have passed, how correct Dugger was when he spoke those words. History will place these days of darkness we have endured among the most corrupt, base, senseless, blood-soaked passages of time ever endured since the birth of this republic. Beyond the brazen smash-and-grab robbery of our tax dollars that has taken place in the Treasury Department, beyond the rising smiley-faced fascism we have watched rising in every corner of the nation, beyond the lies repeated daily without fear of accountability, there is the body count.

Three thousand souls on a bright Tuesday morning, who would be alive but for the negligence and staggering ineptitude of those tasked to stand the watch, have been used deliberately and with intent as an excuse to deliver tens and tens and tens of thousands more innocents to the dust of an early grave in Iraq and Afghanistan. Two thousand soldiers, almost all of them young American boys and girls, have had the life blasted out of them because they were sent by their commander in chief to find weapons of mass destruction that did not exist. Those soldiers who remain, those soldiers who have been redeployed into the war zone two or three times already, wait with grim resolve to be brought home to their families whole and sane and safe.

The occupation of Iraq is almost a thousand days old now, and as the self-serving justifications for invasion wither in the desert sun, as the neo-conservative “Bush Doctrine” collapses in a swelling flood of blood and total failure, as more and more people see impeachment as a moral necessity, as those who stand in opposition wonder what they can do to thwart a corrupt and crazed administration that exists entirely without checks and balances, there remains one act of defiance and strength and solidarity which cannot be ignored.

We take it to the streets. All of us.

On Saturday, September 24th, there will be a protest in Washington DC. This gathering must dwarf all previous demonstrations against this administration, must be larger than all previous protests combined, must fill every street and every avenue and every inch of space, until the city itself and the nation entire is forced to stop, and turn its face to our faces, and hear the truth. You must be there. You must bring your friends, your family, your neighbors. It is a moral imperative.

That weekend will see far more than a protest. On the 25th, Progressive Democrats of America will host a wide-ranging strategy session at the David A. Clarke School of Law on Connecticut Avenue. The purpose of this gathering will be to prepare progressive legislative and electoral strategies for the 2006 midterm elections. PDA activists from all across the country will be in attendance. Speakers at this event will include long-time activist Tom Hayden and voting rights advocate John Bonifaz.

On Monday the 26th, Progressive Democrats of America, working in concert with United for Peace and Justice, will send a battalion of activists up and down the halls of the House of Representatives to lobby congresspeople to demand a withdrawal of troops from Iraq. We will, quite simply, not take no for an answer, and we will have the wind of hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of thousands of protestors at our backs.

Let the word go forth from this time and place that the progressive movement in America does not accept failure as an option, that the streets of Washington DC will be ours come the close of September, that we are the ones we have been waiting for, and that our time is now. Be there with us. Stand and be true.

But I am very acquainted with the name...and it is "Dugger". I always hate when people misspell it, or even worse, mispronounce. After all, you "dug" a hole...you didn't "doog" a hole, lol.;)
Thanks.:)

My only other DC protest was the big assed one right before the Invasion/Occupation. I hope this one truly does DWARF that one.

It's an amazing thing to be around so many like, or nearly like, minded folks.

It makes you think that there is still some fight left in the American populace. Not much, but still some left willing to fight for what's right.

22. William Pitt,
Those first four paragraphs are an amazing piece of writing. What an accomplishment to state as if NEW the reality of the nightmare we have been living.

One wants to quote the whole thing again, but let's just contemplate ONE sentence:

"Three thousand souls on a bright Tuesday morning, who would be alive but for the negligence and staggering ineptitude of those tasked to stand the watch, have been used deliberately and with intent as an excuse to deliver tens and tens and tens of thousands more innocents to the dust of an early grave in Iraq and Afghanistan. "

******************

I hope this declaration sees wide circulation. Thank you.

(One small point, I think the word "hence" connotes "out into the future" rather than back into the past. You could simply remove the word from your first sentence.)

32. It's About Time!!! Let's Party!!
The real message sent to Nixon about Vietnam wasn't on the News or by his inner circle, it came when he looked out at the mall and saw hundreds of thousands of protestors marching at his doorstep.

It's long time for all of us who are so incensed by this regime to let them see us en masse. If one march doesn't work, then another.

It was so great seeing the march in New York last summer and sad there hasn't been anything like that since.

And, can I suggest, after this march, how about a couple to the headquarters of the corporate media...give them something real to cover for once (other than their asses)!

33. I'm going, trying to get as many as possible to go too...
Here's a question, though.

Is there any way to get the progressives to accept moderate DEMs?

I am a tough minded DEM, I think moderatation in many areas is key, but I realize there are times when the lines must be redrawn so we aren't "compromised" so far over to the right that we are speaking Republican Lite - like the DLC did when they put our their platform.

Still as much as I feel DEMS need to learn from the Progressives and 3rd parties, I still feel that the core values of the DEMS are still good. Fighting for equality and justice and truth these days get poo pooed because there are people who think those ideals are "quaint" and don't get the job done. Sounds too familiar to me.

I loved Michael Moore's movie - until he said the only way to fix the Democratic party was to destroy it?!

I understand that we have true DINOs and yet just because someone votes in a way we don't agree with doesn't necessarily make that so and we have to quit throwing our DEMs out with the bath water.

I'll take another 200-3000 like John Conyers, Barbara Boxer or Paul Hackett who can speak the plain truth follow their own inner guide and inspire others to do the same.

But until all those people show up, I think it's up to WE THE PEOPLE to shout it out!

I want to see 5 Million people out in DC on the 24th --- and I want to hear them. I have a vision of rumbling the surrounding buildings, setting off car alarms across the Potomac, and causing airplanes to climb to a higher altitude to avoid the turbulance caused by our voices raised in solidarity against this IMPOSTER.

Commander and Thief.

Pretender.

War Criminal.

Man with an appointment with the Hauge.

A rumble. A thunder. A deep resonance that makes OUR buildings respond to US with sound. I love it!

-----

It makes me think of the thing that I really, really, really, really, really, really, REALLY want a speaker at the rally to say, and to be said in publicity, and flyers, and in the halls of Congress, and--it is be hoped--leaks into the news monopolies as well, and it is this:

58% of the American people opposed the Iraq war BEFORE the invasion. Feb. '03.

63% of the American people think the war was not justified. Aug. '05.

63% of the American people oppose torture UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. May '04.

60% to 70% of the American people oppose Bush on every major policy, foreign and domestic. You name it. The Iraq war. Torture. Social Security. The deficit. Women's rights. MOST Americans oppose Bush, and have done so for over a year.

The American majority is PROGRESSIVE and PEACE-LOVING. And that majority has been DISENFRANCHISED.

We speak for the MAJORITY. And these are news monopoly polls--so you know the numbers opposing Bush are EVEN BIGGER than this.

No more marginalization, and trivialization, and being ignored. No more!

And we WILL restore our right to vote!

And, when we do, the Bushites and and war profiteers and global corporate predators who have targeted this country for destruction had better get off shore fast, because we're coming after them, and we will de-charter and dismantle them, and prosecute their board members and CEOs for treason and conspiracy. No more! No more!

-----

I'm on my high horse today! But, anyway, that's the message I want--and the facts totally back it up. WE ARE THE MAJORITY!
