2. No, not necessarily
Southeastern Ohio, the Appalachian region, is usually up for grabs and very nearly went blue in 2004. The further west you go towards Cincinnati, the more conservative the voting. SW and SE Ohio are VERY different in many ways.

I'm actually surprised Hackett took Brown County. This bodes well for him taking both Scioto and Pike. (fingers crossed!)

And some of the immediately surrounding counties are downright scary.

12. Yeah, Warren County always scares me
I'm originally from Scioto County (which is a lot more sane!) and went to college in Cincy. I wish I had a nickel for every trip I've made up and down Route 52 -- I'd make Rupert Murdoch look like a penniless tramp!

I hope Warren County hasn't soured you on all of the area -- that particular place is like a trip into the Twilight Zone.

13. I guess since living on the East Coast for 30 yrs.
and in Europe, Ohio strikes me as the twilight zone in general. For instance, I was just up in Lorain this past weekend, so many people out of work, plants closed, yet saw a ton of Bu$h/Cheney stickers on beat up vans.

15. Take thyself on a weekend trip to Athens, Ohio
Edited on Tue Aug-02-05 08:03 PM by theHandpuppet
Believe me, it will restore your soul and your sanity. Take a side trip to Nelsonville, too, just about 10 miles from Athens. It's worth the trip.

There actually IS intelligent, liberal life to be found in Ohio, but you have to know where to look. As for myself, being from eastern Appalachian Ohio, I sometimes prefer to imagine that I come from another state entirely. :)

16. This is what I'm talking about, my friend
Warren County is for neocon neanderfundies -- come east and look what you find:

http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/200...

Pike County:

Schmidt: 611 votes (39%)
Hackett: 965 votes (61%)

12 of 24 precincts reporting

Adams County:

Schmidt: 551 votes (43%)
Hackett: 721 votes (57%)

12 of 35 precincts reporting

Scioto County:

Schmidt: 1,213 votes (34%)
Hackett: 2,379 votes (66%)

50 out of 70 precincts reporting

14. According to the Warren County link
on DU, with 36% of precincts reporting, Schmidt is comfortably ahead but voters are approving new and renewed tax levys by the same or greater margins. That's not very Republican. The joint must be totally bi-polar...

17. The district in question is typically over 70% Republican
So it would be a HUGE victory. Even a narrow loss bodes well for us b/c that is NOT a district that should be competitive.
