Orrin Hatch on the polygamy: I need help, if you please! |
|
Edited on Wed Aug-03-05 08:02 PM by hopein08
I was watching an A&E show this afternoon on polygamy in the fundamentalists sects of the Church of Latter Day Saints and the narrator kept referring to the fact that most government officials turn a blind eye to polygamy, which seems absolutely horrible not to mention illegal. Scott Howell, the minority leader in the Utah State Senate, was interviewed and did a very nice fence straddling on the issue. I just looked him up and found out that he was Hatch's 2000 Democratic opponent, who obviously lost. But I was wondering where Hatch stands on gay marriage and the Federal Marriage Amendment. It was hard to sift through what he says to figure out where he really stands. Maybe someone here knows better than me? The reason I was wondering is because it seems that you can't be for marriage being ONLY between "one man and one woman" (in the words of the great Ricky Santorum) and turn a blind eye to polygamy. Santorum ought to get on this as the next pet cause. But, I digress. I remember reading, maybe here, that Hatch had made some weird statement on polygamy but I can't remember what. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!
Sorry to ramble so much!

1. You have to call them out on their hypocrisy |
|
But as long as we are not talking about child brides or coercion, I do not see anything wrong with polygamy.

2. Don't have the statement |
|
But you've just documented why we, the polyamorists of the world, changed the name for what we do. We wanted to be distinguished from the polygamists and responsible non-monogamy is just too tongue twisting.

3. I know polygamy is illegal but there are other related issues such as |
|
women having several illegitimate children by different fathers.
Without judging either situation, what is the moral grounds for making one illegal and tolerating the other?

6. Thank you so much for those links! |

I really got a lot out of them. But sometimes trying for follow Orrin Hatch's line of reasoning and figure out what he is really and truly saying gives me a headache. He is one of the best political talkers, and that really isn't a compliment!)
Anyway, thank you again. I'm fascinated by all the polygamy shows that have been on lately since that arrest warrant was issued in Arizona for that Warren Jeffs guy (I think that was his name). I'm still learning to I don't have a set opinion yet, but is very interesting.
