Santorum loses it on the Brian Leher Show...
Edited on Thu Aug-04-05 04:59 PM by Rainscents
Santorum loses it on the Brian Leher Show

The Brian Lehrer Show on WNYC had Rick on today to discuss his new book. A C&L frenchman named Joel reports: The twenty-minute interview started off fairly calm but grew increasingly more heated as the
conversation went on.

"The fabulous snarky Lehrer started jabbing an obviously frustrated and annoyed Santorum when the topic turned to the abortion issue. By the time they got on the rights of gays, Santorum was virtually yelling at
Lehrer. Santorum reiterated his assertion that gay sex is never consensual and that it is a kin to bigamy, polygamy, incest, or adultery. At that point, Lehrer let loose and brought up the fact that Santorum's Chief of Staff just came out of the closet. Santorum was pissed off that Lehrer brought this up."

Capitol Buzz has Rick's NPR spot as and says that Santorum plays the victim!

82. It means that for him, he is shamed by his experience with gay sex
Edited on Fri Aug-05-05 08:51 AM by Logician
Men like him, who are consistent and vocal opponents of gay sex, often times have secrets in their closets. I would not be surprised that Santorum was seduced into or initiated gay sex as an adult, and is self-hating-- not being able to reconcile his enjoyment of sex with another man.

Thus, the anger is externalized and becomes a campaign. How many times have we found strong opponents of gay rights to be closeted self-hating gay men?

Need I say more? I think not. We should just smear him with the buzz that he is likely to be gay himself, and unable to accept that part of him.

7. Is Santorum "converted?"
Lately, there have been a few radio segments focusing on the effects of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest-type "conversion" programs (gay to straight) run by the usual suspects -- religious fanatics.

Santorum has always seemed to me to be one of these "converts."

His remark that gay sex is never consensual sounds like the kind of ignorance that could easily come out of one of their program manuals.

15. not converted - just closeted and hating himself
he is not free to do anything but try to take away everyone else's freedoms.

He's in for a rude awakening - first of all, it ain't gonna happen, and secondly, if he wants to be frustrated for the rest of his life that we (gays and single moms & dads and couples who aren't married)do apparently have wholesome happy lives in spite of dickheads like him, then he should just keep believing the crap he spouts -- it's not going to change reality.

The kind of reality he wants is what is reality in Afghanistan, or Iran, not America.

24. This should be required listening for every American
At the end, when Leher makes him re-read the "left's" definition of freedom -- which is BEAUTIFUL, and is IS, in fact, the definition of freedom, toward which the Enlightenment reached -- it is clear that Santorum is a fascist -- and the guy calls him out on it. "So -- you're saying that YOU get to decide what the moral code is," and all he can say is -- "you don't think that everyone running around doing what they want doesn't affect me???"

If we could get every American to understand some basic liberty 101, and play Rick Santorum for them, it would be easy-squeezy to peel anyone with a rational mind from the GOP.

Of course -- that is assuming that there is still anyone sticking with them that has a rational mind.

27. Santorum is so amazingly illogical
First it is radical feminists that tell women they are worthless if they don't have a career. Lehrer questions him on why he is placing the responsibility of staying home to raise kids strictly on women, Santorum quotes stats that show the the majority of working mothers would rather stay home with their kids. HUH?????

Then when Lehrer asks why they are working if they'd rather stay home, Santorum blames liberal Hollywood for making families greedy and want more material goods. Then when Lehrer says perhaps it is more about providing their families' basic needs, then Santorum blames liberals for raising taxes. He says the increased tax burden to fund all those crazy liberal programs are forcing mothers into the workplace. Lehrer reminded him that the tax burden has been shifted from the rich to the middle class.

What an idiot. Santorum has voted for every single bloated Pentagon budget proposed. He has voted against increases to the minimum wage. Everything is the fault of those evil liberals.

Oh, he also blamed "the divorce culture" on liberals. I guess that's why you never see any Republican politicians divorcing their wives. Damn those evil liberals for forcing Newt Gingrich and Rudy Giuliani and Bob Barr and Bob Dole who Henry Hyde and Mitch McConnell and John Warner and Kit Bond and Ben Nighthorse and Kay Bailey Hutchison and John McCain and Rush Limbaugh and Ronald Reagan to get divorced!

The thing about tax burden got me good. I'd like to know exactly what liberal policy created more of a tax burden then the defense spending of the 80s.

And then a caller had an excellent point that some parents have to work just to get benefits of health coverage. How would Santorum vote on national health care. That would certainly help families wouldnt it?

that Santorum had to contradict his earlier statements to "prove" he wasn't a sexist. Santorum noted that his own mother worked and actually made more money than his dad for some time. I wonder if Ricky feels his own Mommy short-changed him. Rick should spend some time with a shrink and work out his own issues (of which there appear to be QUITE a few) before he tries to impose his own twisted rules of morality on the rest of the country.

He made a big boo boo near the end that wasn't taken into account because of the time clock running out on the interviewer that I would nixed the clock for it were me. Fecal Matterman made a case against goverment intervention on taxes but was wanting government intervention in private life on gay marriage. I woulda taken him to task right there and maybe forgotten a caller or two. Government has a place when it comes to taxes but nowhere did the founding fathers say governemnt has place in your private life and that infact is a main basis of conservative doctrine and thrown that in his face. Either you own up to authoritarian values or you back off and be a true conservative and watched Fecal Matterman squirm on that one for all to hear but not let him spin off the hook. These nazi's don't even know the meaning of conservatism in the slightest anymore.

Santorum believes his Chief of Staff is a serial rapist, and he's okay with that. Sounds like a values problem.

50. I caught the tail end of Sanctimonium's whining on NPR this morning
I was rolling my eyes the whole time :eyes: . The funny thing was that since I came across it without having heard the announcement of who it was I didn't know at first who was speaking. However after hearing the nature of the blather I thought to myself, "This just has to be that bastard Santorum". Sure enough after he stopped ranting the host noted that it indeed had been him.

And gay sex is never consensual? I'll have to tell that to my friend Mike, my friend Paula and her partner--and myself for that matter. Santorum is a nutcase.

Notice that I said MR. Santorum, not SEN. Santorum. As soon as he starts acting like a Senator, then I'll call him Senator and not one split second before.

Anyway, he didn't Vesuvius all over the place but he sounded so annoyed that anyone, let alone the radio host, would dare contradict him. His frustration was like that of the person who thinks, "How DARE you contradict ME! Its the same as contradicting the Lord God Almighty!" It's the typical Its-All-The Liberals-Fault-That-I-Can't-Beat-Up-My-Wife-Because-She-Dares-Think-For-Herself-Anymore argument of the Christian Fascist Right. Ho Hum!

When he quoted that passage from Planned Parenthood about individual right to our own spiritual journey, he went absolutely looney---someone else's life choices "influence" his OWN morality. . .

He needs to be voted out of office and confined to the 700 Club.

He honestly thinks that gays are supposed to sacrifice our lives in order to protect the insecurity of heterosexuals...he advocates that everyone be virtually forced to believe the same things for everyone's lives, like this is 1950.

The "ideal" of marriage. . .that would be the "ideal" of the old 19th century coverups of alcoholism and wifebeating.

OMG. . .the conversation about his communications director. . .please...please...someone ASK Ricky WHY he hasn't sent the man to the infamous reparative therapy camps?

We don't have the right to consensual activity. . . we need to seek his approval for our own choices. Yep - he hates the right to privacy for anyone's home. . .he hates consensual sex. Wonder what his past is?

I see...he doesn't talk about it with his gay staffer. . .well, how would you tell your own assistant that you think he should be considered less valuable than other citizens?

I get the feeling that he believes the only role gays have in society is to quietly do the wives hair, design pretty dresses for them, help make products to keep a man looking clean and pay higher taxes to give heterosexual "families" the opulent life they deserve as the "ideal" in society.

114. did I miss something?
I listened to the show, but I never heard him say that gay sex or any other kind of sex was never consensual. If I understood his rant, he was arguing that the Supreme Court erred in saying that people have a right to consensual sex, because that would imply that people have a right to bigamy, adultery, incest, etc. He is, of course, a bigot for not recognizing the right of gays to marry and to raise children. Santorum wants to deny, e.g., a lesbian the right to get pregnant, have a baby, and raise her child with her partner in a loving home. He's says that he's concerned about the children, but I don't quite see how the child in my example would be better off never existing.

61. What happens to people?
To make them give a shit what other adults are doing in their homes? Really? I want to know.

The thought of Santorum having sex sickens me more than any thought I could have right now. He obviously hates sex; maybe Mommy told him it was dirty or he thinks about boys when he gets a woody or something, but for Christ's sake, I would never want to pass a law to keep some poor slob from having sex with Santorum if they really wanted to.

Why are orgasms so scary to these people? Because when he says "the pursuit of happiness" has destroyed America and is harming his tender soul, what he means is, people are having orgasms all over the nation in the privacy of their homes in ways Santorum finds offensive. Orgasms! Imagine?

What screw comes loose in these nuts that they give a shit what anyone else does in private? It just never made sense to me unless they were just horribly raised or they have mental issues.

When people are having fun--real, let-loose, not-at-other-people's-expense fun, they're out of control.

People having fun don't want to follow orders, bow to authoritarian dictates, or control everybody else.

That's why they hate marijuana, and they hate the idea of sex for pleasure.

Doesn't their bible state that joy is one of the "fruits of the spirit?"

So what the hell is so bad about a little joy? However you shake it out?

Didn't they ever read "Song of Songs?"

I ask because they seem to want to "please god" by forcing everyone else to live as they do, yet the god of the bible didn't seem to think sex was such an awful thing. I mean, David had a bejillion wives and concubines. And they still quote his Psalms today???????

So where does all this "sex is bad" stuff come from? I can only assume it is from bad parenting or confusion over their own sexuality?

69. Well, it sure isn't decent christianity. . .
What he doesn't want to talk about is the seemingly endless voyeuristic special rights that Republican men want to reserve for themselves, particularly in peering into the private affairs of others.

Frankly, I can't understand where the Right is coming from on this issue. The government HAS to set an "ideal" for relationships in order to encourage marriage and a "proper" two-parent family household. Well, 1,100 benefits and privileges set in legal stone later, and the divorce rate hovers around 50% with no sign of abating. Obviously, all this special government treatment hasn't done much to encourage people to honor their commitments.

So that leaves what seems most obvious to me - once the gays are put back into the closet and told they are only allowed to become hairdressers and interior decoraters, the straights will be told that the State, in order to encourage the ideal, will now step in and select your marriage partners. Then they'll pass special legislation granting ONLY the state the right to arbitrarily petition to dissolve a marriage, meaning, the Schiavo Act - you know, if a bunch of church members proclaim that you've been an unsuitable husband, that's all the State needs whether you want a divorce or not.

I'm sick and tired of these people. They chose their own wacko religious beliefs - and if they are frustrated because people think they belong in the nuthouse, too bad. They made this lifestyle choice for themselves - not for me. And no decent, truly patriotic American is gonna allow them to make those choices for anyone else, either.

If they don't the moral strength to live their lives and raise their family without the rest of us being forced to fawn over them constantly and make sacrifices of our OWN lives, then they need to seek out another religious belief - because this one hasn't met their addictive need for constant attention.

From all the bravado on here, I expected a temper tantrum from Santorum, or at least a rebuke. But, he held himself together throughout the very challenging question and answer session.

I couldn't disagree more with what this guy is saying about gay people and consensual sex, but saying he "lost it" is a bit overkill. It was a lively debate...just the kind that I like the most.

Kudos to Rick for asking real, thoughtful and deliberate questions while allowing the guest to express his view completely.

75. A sane person whose culture won't allow him to do so and who respects his
culture. I have no problem with understanding Santorum. Have you ever had a conversation with a Mormon? To him or her, gay sex is not consensual because it simply can't be imagined. It is beyond his comprehension. This does not make him insane. It may make him some other things, but not insane. In fact, it's quite common.

The reality is that we all live in the same country and we need to find a way to communicate with each other without pissing everyone off who's sitting in the room.

Now, I want Santorum's slimy butt OUT of the senate because I think his philosophy on how to govern and write laws is totally messed up and causes people to suffer. Plus, I think he is in very bad company regarding his political tactics and philosophy. It's akin to the dishonest and malicious style of Bush.

All that being said, I didn't hear the man get upset or "lose it" during the interview.

100. Gay sex is not consentual to a Morman?
Beyond comprehenion? If a Morman or anyone else can't comprehend reality then I would have to say it is insane. One definition of insanity is loss of touch with reality. It is certainly a reality that gay people engage in sex on a consentual basis. If you can't believe that then you are living in some different world. A world of denial if nothing else.

107. I agree, they are living in a world of denial at the least.
But, I don't begrudge them their fantasy. I just don't want to live with that world view.

Now, I'm a gay man, and I know that it's consensual. If they'd just ask me, then they'd have their answer! But, it doesn't work that way. I think they have to envision themselves doing it to digest the reality of the situation, and that's so repulsive to them that they refuse. They'll call it names and curse the reality so they don't have to deal with it.

BUT, I believe in the liberty of free thought and even lifestyle. I want that, so I can give them that, too. I just want their hands off the laws, because their philosophies harbor fear which leads to real abuse.

Still, if they have a hard time seeing what in the world is pleasurable about gay sex and can therefore only define it as an aggressor and a victim, then I pity their ignorance. But I can live with that too.

I want the free country I grew up believing we had.

Santorum doesn't.

That's the bottom line.

81. His definition of "a villiage" is the same as what Hillary said.
"For Bill and me, there has been no experience more challenging, more rewarding, and more humbling than raising our daughter.

And we have learned that to raise a happy, healthy and hopeful child, it takes a family, it takes teachers, it takes clergy, it takes business people, it takes community leaders, it takes those who protect our health and safety, it takes all of us.

Yes, it takes a village.

And it takes a president. It takes a president who believes not only in the potential of his own child, but of all children - who believes not only in the strength of his own family, but of the American family, who believes not only in the promise of each of us as individuals, but in our promise together as a nation. It takes a president who not only holds these beliefs but acts on them. It takes Bill Clinton. "
