59. We're basically a monarchy-by-proxy.
While Elizabeth II is our Queen as well as UK's, as you can tell by the fact that her face is on all our coins, her duties in this country are performed by the Governor-General in her stead. This means signing bills, handing out medals, and appointing Senators (who are nothing like American Senators, I hasten to reassure our Yank friends). Like the Queen herself in Britain, it's basically a ceremonial job, while the real power is held by the House and the Ministries.

Question is...is the husband Cheney or BushCo? Look at that top right pic...it's like she wants to be Cheney!

like her, since Mrs R's native language is French.

Actually, where she grew up, they spoke a French creole at home, so she can understand a Haitian, a Cajun, or a Quebecois better than she can understand someone who speaks Parisian French.

Good for Canada. Too bad for us. I have believed for a long time that there's nothing wrong with America that couldn't be solved by us having a black woman as President. Better yet, a black woman in a wheelchair. And I'm not being patronizing; I firmly believe this.

THEN we'd see some changes, yes?

45. Not really
This is a guy group activity, trying to top one another in your descriptions of some woman.

If you admire this woman's looks, fine--there are actually male politicians whose looks I admire.

But is that any reason for a group droolfest? It's as if you're all trying to prove to the other guys that you're straight.

Of course I have a bias. My fascination with women of color goes back to the age of 5. I saw Marilyn McCoo on the cover of the Age of Aquarius album, and voila, I had my first crush. I was the "Odball" of my lily white neighborhood...the rest of the boys were drooling over Farrah or Suzanne Somers, and I was ga-ga over the 5th Dimension lead singer.

52. How would one go about approaching a head of state?
a real one like her, I mean. With ours (or what passes for one) it'd be easy: just get him blitzed on a fifth of Jack Daniel's (or the Evil Dewar's), then tell him you need some help milking the horse. :-) But with a genuine head of state who exudes class, like this one, how would you keep from getting majorly tongue-tied?

67. the GG usually has a public open house on New Year's Day
http://www.gg.ca/media/doc.asp?lang=e&DocID=4086

The traditional "levee". (I don't know if they still serve complimentary mimosas at the Ottawa event, as in previous years!) I believe the correct form of address is "Your Excellency", but somehow I doubt that she will insist that everyone use it every single time.

If this new GG is going to be out and about as much as Madame Clarkson, she'll probably show up in most regions of Canada (and quite a few overseas trips too) during her 5-year term. I know a couple of people who went to Ottawa to get awards which she presented to them (one of her ceremonial duties). And she came to my town once and one of my co-workers was her tour guide around a heritage site she was dedicating.

In the old days, GGs were rather aloof, but ever since the 1960s, they're been expected to meet more regular people in informal settings. Which is fine by me, if I'm paying for their salaries and expenses! I have no trouble with a GG who's media-savvy, a "people person", and someone who loves being our country's official host. The Prime Minister has more than enough to do, running the country, without taking on any more ceremonial duties.

I know the kings of England, and I quote the fights historical
From Marathon to Waterloo, in order categorical

I'm very well acquainted, too, with matters mathematical
I understand equations, both the simple and quadratical
About binomial theorem I'm teeming with a lot o' news
With many cheerful facts about the square of the hypotenuse

With many cheerful facts about the square of the hypotenuse
With many cheerful facts about the square of the hypotenuse
With many cheerful facts about the square of the hypotepotenuse

I'm very good at integral and differential calculus
I know the scientific names of beings animalculous
In short, in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral
I am the very model of a modern Major-General

In short, in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral
He is the very model of a modern Major-General

I know our mythic history, King Arthur's and Sir Caradoc's
I answer hard acrostics, I've a pretty taste for paradox
I quote in elegiacs all the crimes of Heliogabalus
In conics I can floor peculiarities parabolous

I can tell undoubted Raphaels from Gerard Dows and Zoffanies
I know the croaking chorus from the Frogs of Aristophanes
Then I can hum a fugue of which I've heard the music's din afore
And whistle all the airs from that infernal nonsense Pinafore

And whistle all the airs from that infernal nonsense Pinafore
And whistle all the airs from that infernal nonsense Pinafore
And whistle all the airs from that infernal nonsense Pinapinafore

Then I can write a washing bill in Babylonic cuneiform
And tell you ev'ry detail of Caractacus's uniform
In short, in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral
I am the very model of a modern Major-General

In short, in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral
He is the very model of a modern Major-General

In fact, when I know what is meant by "mamelon" and "ravelin"
When I can tell at sight a Mauser rifle from a javelin
When such affairs as sorties and surprises I'm more wary at
And when I know precisely what is meant by "commissariat"

When I have learnt what progress has been made in modern gunnery
When I know more of tactics than a novice in a nunnery
In short, when I've a smattering of elemental strategy
You'll say a better Major-General had never sat a gee

You'll say a better Major-General had never sat a gee
You'll say a better Major-General had never sat a gee
You'll say a better Major-General had never sat a sat a gee

For my military knowledge, though I'm plucky and adventury
Has only been brought down to the beginning of the century
But still, in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral
I am the very model of a modern Major-General

But still, in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral
He is the very model of a modern Major-General
