Have we all filed complaints to the FCC about Novak's 'shit' comment
http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/complaints.html

I mean these idiots on the right filed complaints when Paul McCartner did a suggestively drug orient song during the superbowl, Bono saying 'fuck' when he was extremely happy and even a band song a song they have done for years that have a curse word in it (from Live8)

So we should all be filing a complaint about Bob Novak. Let's let CNN see just what their loyal viewers do to us!

5. Its probably just company policy.
Edited on Fri Aug-05-05 05:16 AM by tritsofme
I can't imagine the FCC has standards on what constitutes basic cable.

I've also flipped on the South Park movie on Comedy Central (which I believe is basic cable) and it lets just say there was no shortage of the work "fuck"

Either way, I think the FCC only has regulatory power on "over the air" broadcasting such as radio and free tv, not cable and satellite.

9. File ANYWAY
Anything the FCC says to let Novak off the hook will sound like they have a policy of going easy on Republicans and Conservatives. And believe me, if the FCC gets even a couple hundred complaints, it will hit the news media -- so many people were burned by Michael Powell that they're eager for anything that makes the FCC look bad.

I can imagine Howard Stern will be talking about this all morning.

So file a complaint anyway.

Do it for The Children.

19. my southpark education is woefully inadequate
but I imagine you're probably right. Defining "basic cable" would be tricky. I suppose the thing to do would be to complain to CNN. And we could always complain to James Dobson too! If he became publicly outraged at Novak, that would be poetic justice!

16. But again, does the FCC define what a "premium"
station is?

I would think each cable company has its own definition, and terminology.

I really don't think the FCC can censor cable or satellite tv.

7. I'd rather not
I don't want the FCC poking its nose into cable. I don't want to be a part of politically opening the door to greater FCC meddling of the cable airwaves.

Novak just is not worth it.

10. No, Not the FCC. Complain to CNN
Do you want your HBO, etc. G rated 24/7? That is what you are trying to accomplish when you file language complaints to the FCC about any cable channels.

Who wants the FCC to regulate the Comedy Channel and Jon Stewart? Then where would I get the real news?

14. I tried in vain
to address this last night. I mean, what about the children? But the people who thought I was serious said the FCC couldn't do anything, and that my efforts could cause grave harm to come to freedom of the press. So, the next idea was how about the PTC? (I mean, what about the children?) That idea caused concern, too. My final thought was that we could form our own media watch-dog group. I thought the Organization of Religious Groups Against Smutty Material (ORGASM) might be able to draw the line in the sand, and bravely deal with the damage Bob did to the children, including the unborn. Because, in the end, that's what this comes down to: the children.

15. On bleeping: Daily Show 4 AUG
didn't bleep it when they aired the clip, but then bleeped Jon a few minutes later when he said "shit."

I was very surprised b/c they always bleep swears on there.

What I really love is when a program'll bleep "god" out of "god damn." :)

17. Don't sweat the "censorship"
IMHO ...

This isn't a censorship issue and it won't turn into a censorship issue.

Why? Well, first of all, we're not writing to demand censorship, we're writing to complain.

Second, Novak's misdemeanor isn't censorable. It simply requires acknowledgment. If we don't complain, it will go unacknowledged.

Third, we know that the FCC's hands are tied. The tantrum took place on cable news, which does not fall under immediate FCC control and would be adjudged as having intrinsic value anyway.

We want to force a moral back-down: For the Right to say "one of our guys messed up". And we want the alternative to be that the whole world would know that there really is a bias in the press, a bias AGAINST the left.

Actual censorship efforts are far different; this is a call for accountability, which is a big conservative touchstone. Well, I say, we should touch them with it -- right on their hypocritical heads.

so I won't do it. I did however, send an email immediately to CNN.

Me complaining about someone saying "shit" would be the height of hypocrisy. Yeah, I know the righties do it, but I have to have some personal standards!
